it's not based on an "older" comic per se . . .

it's based on Darwyn Cooke's "DC: The New Frontier" from 2003-2004.

yes, the story explores the origins of DC heroes and it's set in the mid-1950s, but it's not an old comic in of itself.

it's bloody excellent, between.

historically, i am a bit of a DC guy (started out as a hardcore Marvel Zombie but switched in the mid-80s) but these days i'm really less interested in companies and even characters than i am in specific creators . . . and Darwyn Cooke is a creator who, as far as i am concerned, can do no wrong!

you didn't like the animation in New Frontier??!!??

i mean, i don't think it was as good as it could have been (even on the commentary track, the director talks about how they had to cut a lot of corners for budgetary reasons) but i still think it's definitely some of the best superhero animation i've seen recently.

@ pein -

yeah, it's going to be an interesting summer! i'm going to check out Final Crisis just because of Grant Morrison and i'm interested in Secret Invasion, too, but mostly i've been boycotting events since i got burned by Infinite Crisis and House of M (i didn't even read 52 and Civil War! i'm planning to do that soon, though!)

Nah didn't like the animation that much.  kindda not exactly blunt and not exactly sharp Undecided I like how Wonder woman looked (though i don't like her) she was really an amazon in that one.  I preferred the animation in Superman:Doomsday though superman's face was erhh kindda on the skinny side

Re: The Justice League
« #15 on: March 18, 2008, 03:46 PM »

wow. . . different strokes, i guess! because i originally said "the animation was definitely better than Superman: Doomsday, Dr. Strange and that Ultimate Avengers mess," but i decided there was no need to diss others!

i guess the animation on Doomsday was not bad, though the lines in Superman's face were distracting as hell.

i agree with you about Wonder Woman . . . THAT is the way she is supposed to look! she shouldn't be a skinny Sports Illustrated model, she should be a BIG woman . . . but at the same time, not over-muscular likea lot of artists have been drawing her these days.

i still maintain the animtion on New Frontier was great, though. if you watch it, you see that despite some occasional stiffness, there is a real attention to detail that rivals some of Hayao Miyazaki's work . . .

John's head was too round Tongue
Flash was on the scrawny side but i guess with his speed, his metabolism should be about the same.
Hmmmm haven't watched alot of Miyazaki's work - sorry not big on anime or rather manga Undecided i barely make do with those that have touches of that style

I still enjoyed it though.

i'm really not that huge into anime either (though i've been getting more into reading manga) but Miyazaki is another matter altogether.

i think out of all anime, his work is probably most likely to appeal to people who are not generally into anime.

"contrived and unrealistic"?

no, i don't find them so.

"unrealistic," to begin with is a relative term. we are dealing with stories about people with superhuman powers, so obviously there is a degree of suspension of disbelief that comes into play.

but when you get past that, is the behavior of the characters consistent with actual human behavior?

yes, it is. to that extent, it is "realistic."

as for "contrived" . . . i don't understand that part at all.

please explain yourself!
