To Kill A Mockingbird

If you are black and you read the book were you disgusted by it because of its racial slur!!

I personally didn't real like it but it was interesting!!

But tell me who is the mockingbird in the book?

racial slur? Please explain.

Its absolutely one of my favourite books. Instead of being disgusted I was quite edified. Of course, you have to understand it in its context. It might seem condescending but it was written in the 60s. Stereotypes are just that. Stereotypes. Oversimplifications. Many blacks in the US might have been perceived the way she presented it in the book. In any case for her time she was reasonably nice. She was also clear about on racial injustice.

But maybe I don't get you.

I think the mockingbird is Tom Robinson who was innocent and just trying to help and was killed for that.

Feedback please.

at crazylegs

Why will Tom Robinson be the Mokingbird. Why would they try to kill him if he was the good guy? I think it was Scout because she didnt know any better.

Never thought of it that way. You may have a point

Somehow, I still think its Tom Robinson. He was someone that no one had anything bad to say about. He helped the girl he was supposed to have raped because she seemed unhappy. He was innocent but they killed him, because he was black. But it could apply to both of them to different degrees.

Tom Robinson is at the end of the book or kind of in the middle. He gets covicted of a crime he didnt do and atticus trys to set him free.

No spoilers oh. Grin Just read on,

The book is quite old, as is the film. Great film. I think Gregory Peck won an Oscar for it. Its one of the few books I'm really passionate about and will recommend to anyone. Its serious, simple, deep and funny at the same time.

Grab it if you can.

I'm done with the book and i believe that ''to kill a mockingbird'' means to destroy innocence and a ''mockingbird'' represents the innocence and I also think that the mockingbirds in the book are Tom Robinson,Dill,Jem,Boo Radley and Mr.Raymond because they're innocents who have been destroyed through contact wit evil. And also in the book, miss maudie explained to Scout that: ''Mockingbirds don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us and that is why its a sin to kill a mockingbird''.
