Newton's 3 Laws Of Graduation
« on: March 27, 2008, 04:15 PM »

First Law: A grad student in procastination tends to stay in procastination unless an external force is applied to it.

this law is know as the law of Inertial and was originally discovered experimentally by Galileo 4 years before Newton was born. Newton was born when he threatened to cut his grad's school funding. This resulted in a quickening of the students research process.

Second Law: The age, a, of a doctoral process is directly proportional to the flexibility, f, given by the advisor and inversely proportional to the student’s motivation m.

mathematically this translates to:
Age PHD= Flexibility / Motivation   a=f/m
.: f=ma

This law is a quantitative description of the effect of the forces experienced by a grad student. A highly motivated student may still remain in grad school given enough flexibility.
However as motivation goes to zero the duration of th PhD goes to infinity.

Third Law: For every action towards graduation there is an equal and opposite distraction.
From PhD Comics via Cubical Life.

This law states that, regardless of the nature of interaction with the advisor, every force for productivity acting on the grad student is accompanied by an equal and opposite useless activity such that the net advancement in the thesis progress is ZERO.

do you think this laws are correct?
