Anambra State Has Banned The Sale Of Condoms! It is now illegal to encourage the use of condoms in southeast Nigeria's Anambra State. The state government has also banned the advocacy and distribution of other forms of contraceptives including IUDs (intrauterine device) and any other "un-natural" birth control.
"Instead of teaching children how to use condoms to enjoy sex they should be taught total abstinence," the state commissioner for health, Amobi Ilika said when announcing the measures in late March at the state capital, Awka. "The use of condoms has greatly encouraged immorality," he said.
Many sociologists as well as family planning and AIDS support groups disagree. "I don't think it's the right step," public affairs analyst Alphonsus Ofodile said. "Even if you ban the use of condoms, people will still have sex. So why would a responsible government want to discourage safe sex?"
More than 3 million people - 3.9 percent of the adult population - are living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. The rate is rising by around 300,000 people a year, according to a 2006 estimate by the joint UN programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
Condoms are openly available throughout Nigeria partly because the federal government, in partnership with family health organisations, has programmes to distribute and sell them. The programmes also produce public announcements on local radio and billboards advocating for the use of condoms.
Many religious groups around the country also back condom use, having recognised that messages urging abstinence have failed to yield the desired results.
The population of Anambra State are not known for habouring particularly fundamentalist beliefs but the ban may have been designed to appeal to local evangelical groups.
For Ofodile, the ban is just a way for the state government "to score a cheap political point". Anambra State has a history of political instability and violence and is now making "a desperate attempt to uphold morals", he said.
Abortion
Besides making advocacy for contraception illegal, commissioner Ilika also railed against abortion. "Abortion is the greatest crime," he said. "[All fetuses] must be allowed to live no matter the circumstances that led to the pregnancy, even rape."
He added that medical practitioners in the state will face stiff penalties if they are caught carrying out abortions or any 'anti-life' activities. "The state government will withdraw the license of any medical personnel who flouts this directive and any hospital will be closed down."
The commissioner did not specify how the state would punish shops and pharmacies caught selling condoms, or individuals caught using them.

First a lady senator from Cross River who had nothing to offer in terms of legislative contributions after being rigged in as a senator, decided to become a fashion police by trying to legislate what our ladies can wear or not to wear.
Now here comes another one, they are banning the condoms sale. Whose brilliant idea was that? May be it's the usual Nigeria rumour, though nothing is impossible when it comes to Nigeria. As when you think you have heard the worst, they will hit you for six. Condom police, that's all Nigerian needs now!! Have they ban sex too?

this is abject stupidity Is this what Obi fought PDP to achieve? To legislate what people can do or not do in bed? Instead of dealing with kids dying from childhood diseases and maternal deaths, its people 'enjoying sex' that is their problem. That woman should be SACKED.

Why is Nigeria moving backwards? This is like in South Africa, where the president did not believe HIV/AIDS is transmitted sexually. In Nigeria!! Just imagine, a country where more than 90% of it's men acts like sexually deprived dogs. HIV/AIDS epidemics rises! Rate of abortion rises! No family planning! Just Imagine! In Nigeria, the impossibility will be made possible! Why is Nigeria moving backwards?

Just when the article mentioned Evangelicals, someone had to blame Catholics: The population of Anambra State are not known for habouring particularly fundamentalist beliefs but the ban may have been designed to appeal to local evangelical groups. I'm not sure its within the state's legal remit to prohibit condoms.

I would advice the government of Anambra State to stop wasting tax payer's time and money on petty, idiotic and propagandistic projects like banning the use of condoms! What? Someone should please tell this joker governor to embark on cardinal programmes that would benefit the masses. Am sure there's loads of them.

Yes The lowest birth rates in the western world is to be found in places like Italy,Spain and Portugal,so keep quiet. I suppose you are referencing Latinos but their relatively higher birth rates cuts across denominations and is normal for people coming from such developing countries.Theirs' is much lower than that of Nigerian immigrants in the US.

I am completely shocked! This just doesn't make any sense! Why would a state in a country reputed for being one of the top ten HIV/AIDS populated countries ban condoms? Sure, I understand where she is coming from:
Take away the condoms-->people are scared of catching a disease-->people stop having random sex and wait till marriage.
Unfortunately, it will never happen this way, in fact, you have a higher chance moving a mountain than thinking you can accomplish this. You cannot stop people from having sex by taking away the condoms. It only makes them want to experiment more and this time, if they catch something, they have an excuse. Remember, before condoms were invented, the so-called children having sex and having babies everywhere. Taking away the condoms will only lead to a higher level of HIV/AIDS and other STDs, abortions and unwanted pregnancies which, if I'm not mistaken, is the very thing we are trying to run away from.
Why is it that every time we talk one step forward, some pea-sized brain senator will try with all his/her might to pull us back to where we started from? Must we always be made to go round in circles numerous times before we achieve one goal?
