Nigeria: Christ Embassy Pastor Arrested Over N4.5 Fraud

Lagos 7 October 2008

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a pastor with Christ Embassy Church in Oregun, Lagos State, Dr. (Miss) Fregene Orighomisan Omawumi, for alleged fraudulent foreign exchange deal as well as issuing a dud cheque.
According to the EFCC, the said pastor who started by allegedly obtaining N3million from another member of the church in a fraudulent foreign exchange trade deal in April this year. It said about N1million has been recovered from her.EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Femi Babafemi, in a statement made available to Daily Champion in Abuja said the victim of the fraud, Mr. Afam Benneth Otiba, said the 33year-old administrative pastor, who is also a medical doctor, obtained the money from him on the pretext that she was going to invest it in online forex trading, promising a 100 per cent return on investment in 45 days.Otiba said he agreed to release the money after the suspect had promised to split the profit with him in a 50-50 ratio and handed a post dated cheque of N4.5million, to cover the capital and the interest to him.According to the EFCC statement, at maturity, the victim took the cheque to the Bank but to his consternation, it bounced. He contacted the suspect who now told him that there was no money to share as she had lost all the money invested in the online forex transaction. All efforts by the victim, who is based in Abuja, to collect his money, even without interest, failed.Instead, the suspect started sending pastors of their church to persuade the victim from taking any action, but the bank where the victim sourced the money would not accept any excuses. It was at this point that the victim decided to report the case to EFCC, which subsequently arrested the pastor. On interrogation, she confessed to have collected the money from the victim, adding She stated that she knew the victim through his sister who is a member of Christ Embassy, Lagos and that she decided to introduce the forex business to him."He gave me N3million in April this year and I promised him N4.5million in 45 days, because the interest I expected from the business was another N3million and we agreed that we would share the interest equally," Pastor Omawumi said. She said that the unusual happened when the President of European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet announced worldwide that there might be increase in the interest rate of Euro and this led to panic buying and eventual crash of the market. The suspect, however, confessed that as of the time she issued the cheque to the victim, she did not have money in the account. The suspect, who claimed to be a full worker at Christ Embassy headquarters, however promised to refund the money as soon as possible.EFCC, which said the Pastor has regretted her action, quoted her as telling its investigators: I feel bad, it was an irrational move, and I should not have been involve."

Pastor Chris is a rare gift to our generation. God's personality expressed in human. People should be very carefull how they talk about him. What u dont understand ask so that u will know. Dont be among the callous ones who dont use their mouths well. Touch not God's anoited in any way either with your month, or pen for God will hold u laible.

Remember no one can take coal against his bossom and not get burnt.

Be warned!!!

Pastor Chris is not a dupe. Several people have received miraculous healing just by watching his television programs. My Dad was one of them and he was not even  500km near his crusade.

Now you think of it , if he has to pay every person that is healed in is crusades 10,000 Rand. Then his ministry will be broke by now.

You must recognise that Pastor Chris is not the one doing the healing. It is God that does the healing, and you tap into it by your faith.

Hope this helps.

Junijustin, that could be correct and goes to show u that it is not Pastor Chris who's doing the healing but it's your faith that enables u to tap into your healing. But the moment you leave there, the devil will come to steal your healing, he'll tell u lies and make u believe you're not really okay yet. If you do not stand on the word of God and declare your healing then you could believe the devil and lose your testimony. It has nothing to do with Pastor Chris.

Once you get healed like that, just keep praising God, giving your testimony and enforcing your healing by the word of God, before long what u have been confessing will become permanent in your life by the Power of the Holy Ghost.

Well said! but don't you think it is fraudulent to publish something that is not yet permanent in rhapsody healing school magazine?

I don't think so.

But my question still is, why do ministries rely on medicine to diagnose and run away from it when it is time to verify?

Well well well! after much hesitation, I'm finally moved to comment on this thread. My comments will be based on three things:
- My membership/interaction with the the ministry within the last five years
- My observation/experience at the Healing School in Lagos which has been clearly stated in detail in another thread
- My personal opinion

Firstly, when I read this story several months back, I quickly dismissed it and regarded it as one of those malicious allegations against Chris borne out of 'jealousy' perharps. Shortly after that incident, I went to the Healing School in Lagos and had a shocking experience myself.
Having observed and clearly understood the gimmick and trickery used in the healing school, I think it may be unlikely for Chris to offer money to anybody to get off the wheelchair; I think he's too smart for that. By this statement, I am not ruling out the possibility of such happening. All I'm saying is that he uses a different method, one which makes it easy for things to go on almost unnoticed.
Kindly read my story on this thread: http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-193649.0.html

The man in question alleged that it was a pastor, not Chris who offered him the money; well I know that Pst Chris is surrounded by ardent loyalists who will do just about anything to protect him and the personality he has built for himself; one of them may have done this.
***I mentioned names of some of his loyalists in the Healing School Lagos in 'The Truth About Christ Embassy Healing School' thread ***

Its hard to draw any conclusion here because there is no evidence to back up the story, yet I can say that it is very possible something of that nature happended. However, there is another allegation of fraud from south Africa which I can relate to because it was exactly the kind of observation I made at the Healing School Lagos.
Please read this:

Lerato Maisela’s hope that her daughter Mathapelo would be healed was dashed after visiting Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s healing school.

Mathapelo Maisela was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2005 and attended two weeks of healing sessions at the Christ Embassy Church. She was 10 at the time.

Her mother told Sowetan that on the day of the supposed healing at one of the church’s seminars, her daughter was well enough to stand on her own but was put in a wheelchair.

“I was new at the church and did not understand the procedure,” she said.

“The other congregants were in another room and watched us on a video link-up.

“After the pastor prayed for my daughter they asked her to stand up as if she were healed.

“The congregants shouted with joy when they saw her walking.”

Maisela said she believed people have the power to heal.

“Pastor Chris took advantage of my desperate situation,” she said. “I believe that God gives people power but if they are greedy they will be punished.”

Maisela’s daughter died shortly after her visit to the pastor.

“My daughter was an amazing child and I was willing to do anything to make sure she became better.

“I am glad that he is exposed. He should stop taking advantage of people.”

Maisela has not gone back to the church since the incident.

• Names have been changed.

All of u critising the hand of God that u have witnessed thru Pastor Chris, how do u intend to see the full manifestation of God in your life.?

The bible said my people are destoyed for the lack of knowledge, they walk on in darkness and die like mere men because they dont know. I still stronggly advice that u get knowledge. Be enlightened in the word of God and u will not talk as u are doing.

Even u can heal as Pastor chris is doing, all u need do is equip urself with God's word. Know it for urself, believe and act on it.

I was once like u arguing about simply things like healings untill i decided to search it  out for myself in God's word.  God also saw my hunger and gave me insight to it. Now i know better and understand better. So give urself to study so that u too can be approved of God.

U dont need a doctor to verify God's mighty works. Doctors only verify if need be to relate with your canal mind.U either believe or u dont.

STOP ARGUING OR DISPUTTING GOD PLS!!! FOR your OWN INTEREST.

First of all are u born again?
If yes then read mark 16:15 -18. Emphasis is on vs 18. Also read 1 peter 2:24, isaiah 55:5. These are some of your heritages or identities as a believer. Every believer is called and have these identities in general while those gifts u referred to are in a more specific term. So special calling or not u have an identity in christ. So u can show your identities by believing and acting on them.

That u testified about a healing doesnt mean the devil will back off and not try agan. The bible said like a roaring loin he is going about seeking whom he may devour. When a man is delivered from a situation the devil still lurks about waiting to see vacancies. The bible said when he sees vacancies in the same place where he was chased out he comes back with more fieceness; this time the bible said that person will be in a worse state than he was.
So what do u do; hold on to the more sure word of prophesy ie the word of God u have heard and not blame the one who even facillated your healing. To keep or stay healed is your responsibilityand not God's or the one who prayed for u.

And paraventure u are not born again, what are waiting for? This is your hour of salvation. Give God a place in your heart so that He can illuminate your heart with His presence. All u need do is believe in Him in your heart confess Him with your mouth as your Lord and savour and u shall be saved as in Rom 10;9

Agwa should pray for 4giveness by equating pastor chris and our Almighty God. It shows he lacks the knowledge of Bible and eventually does not know God.  As for whether pastor chris is real or not, is left for God to judge. We do not help God. He has the ability. But we have the duty to help our neighbours. The Bible said that Iron sharpeneth iron. Bible said we should test every spirit. I have not tested pastor chris and I cannot reject nor accept him.

However, i could remeber years ago when pastor Chris Okotie accused him. The defence to me was a crap. he never denied Joshua. As a pentecostal christian, I watched his defensive telecast to that acusation over and over, i was not impressed but that does not mean that God was not impressed. I am just human who did not pray specifically on the matter to hear from God. So, since then, I was watching and also praying for him.

As for his preaching, he is good on issues like God promisses for us,  But he never get people to know that all God's promises is predicated on our righteousness. See, hell is real and meant for disobedient children. Fornicate with a member, you go to hell. I have never heard any of his preaching on that ground. Please help me. I need to know.

As for his accent of speaking as said by one man, well that was his choice. It does not really matter. But if he is forcing himself to achieve that which leads to his pronunciation of one word in different ways at different telecasts. Greater men of God like Adeboye still speak like a Nigerian and comand great respect home and Abroad. We shouldnot see faking as his character. As for accent faking, I dont need holy spirit to know, He fakes in speaking. I do listen to him. Now he has perfected to some extent, before now, it used to be African-american.

saturn jay, when you are taking your bath, it is impossible for the run-off water to go towards your head region, except you are turning upside down. I am not ready to turn upside down. Our God is so great, an awsome God that no one needs to fight for him. hence, we believe in a peaceful co-existence and not rioutous life, the life that accepts murder of any fellow man no matter what he believes. I know you understood me clearer.

i am sorry to say this but i think some people are paid to say damaging things about men of God. The word clearly says that we should not touch His anoited ones i feel sorry for those who accept to be used to say these things against men of God. they will not only be touching the anoited ones but misleading thousands of Christians and those who are yet to come to the kingdom of God. i was healed through Pastor Chris' online blog and i am still healed i was not paid.   Those who just believe anything they hear BE CAREFULL; the devil is still at large

The man is  a pimp! Cool

People say his teachings are sound, but I beg to differ, cus you don't serve poison raw, you mix it with some real
food.  Study your scriptures and see what the Apostles taught and how the behaved (lived), its nothing like mr. oyaks.

No apologizes to the man/g.o/pastor/bishop/phd-serving folks.
