Internet Access in Lagos
« on: August 17, 2005, 12:46 AM »

First off...congratulations for the forum...it's something that I have been searching for a long time...and was missing of the internet...that is...honest opinions from users about Nigeria's internet access....

I'm aware of a few posts asking about internet access in Nigeria...so apologise for one more of them...Smiley

I'm going to be relocating in Lagos soon...and I was wondering about internet access...

I have done a small research...and this is my understanding so far...

1. There are two ways communication with the "outside" world...or the backend of the internet...satelite and fiber optic which is only SAT-3 at the moment.Looks like the main one at the moment is Satelite...?

2. Main access to the internet is wireless satelite connection.although it looks like some residences have fiber optics connection to data centres...the backbone of the internet..is still VSAT...so u get fiber optic between house and data centre..and Satelite thereafter.is that correct...?

On my case now...

I'm looking (don't we all...?Smiley) for a reliable internet connection...

1. Obviously..the SAT-3 fiber optic...would be the preferable..but is it available yet via the ISPs in nigeria...? and which ISPs would provide that...and at what cost...

2. If i go VSAT option...what seems to be a reliable solution.and what pings should I be looking for...? Looks like multilinks are having both phone services and internet...?

thanks for your help...

Hello tomcat,

I use the Multilinks Internet service.  it costs approximately 500 naira per day and once it's activated, you pay using recharge cards which you can buy at your convenience.  They will keep billing you every day once it's activated whether you use the Internet or not.

See this page for similar service providers!  Starcomms, for example, costs about the same as Multilinks!  The sustained download speed is about 8 kilobytes per second (a little bit above 56k modem speed)

Thanks for your prompt reply....

I take it that multilinks and starcomms...are as fast as it can get in Lagos...?

Also...anyone has used Nova...? any ideas on their services..?

and also...since April 2005 nitel announced about ISP wholesale of SAT-3 access...has this one been cascaded down to home use yet...?

You could also get internet service through intercellular, you will need to get a terminal, internet card or a 1X CAPABLE PHONE , like the nokia 3585i phone and a data cable and you will be on within minutes. check www.intercellular-ng.com for more details. I use them while In Nigeria.  You could also check out netcom, i think it is netcomafrica.com  , they claim to offer broadband while at the warfitel stuff, you could give them a try.

I will advice that you don't subscribe to Starcomms, because of virus. I don't know why Starcomms breed virus on their network. I use Multilinks it's cheap and you are billed per use.

i bought the Netcom wireless modem and for 6000 naira a month it was brilliant. I upgraded yesterday to the 20,000 naira service as i download lots of music and they don't charge per mb. So far so good.
