How Should Religion Be Taught In School
« on: April 14, 2008, 07:02 PM »

The Muslim Association of Malawi is threatening a court injunction against the country's education authorities for introducing bible knowlege as a separate subject, alongside religious studies in primary schools.

They say it imposes the subject on children who are too young to make up their minds about what religious doctrine they should study without the benefit of choice.

Should pupils be given a choice in what religions they study at school? Are we teaching primary school pupils enough about other religions? Is there pressure on teachers and schools to cover all the religions? Would teaching about all religions in school lead to greater tolerance in society? Send us your views.

I think it should be a matter of choice to the students.
like Christians chose Bible Knowledge and M'uslims chose I'slamic studies.

Normally for primary schools, both religions are taught and kids get  to  know a bit about both religions, its only when they get to middle/high school, they get to choose .

Where I come from, You pray when you reach school, you pray leaving for lunch, you pray after lunch and you pray going home at the end of the day.

If it wasn't for prayers, I'll be a lost soul  Lips sealed

Since Religion is such a key and central aspect of humanity throughout history I think that it is very important that it is studied in school.  But the Study of religion is quite different from religious indoctrination.  I think that World should have a curriculum for a study of global religion.  The study should comprise the history of the religious movement (something where many adherents of religion are ignorant of their own religions) and also the key precepts and doctrines of those religions.
