Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday invaded some cyber cafes in Akure, the Ondo State capital, and apprehended some persons suspected to be involved in Internet scam. t was gathered that no fewer than 15 suspected ”yahoo” boys, including two undergraduates of a higher institution in the state, were nabbed during the operation.
The undergraduates, it was learnt, consequently missed their examination due to hold on Wednesday morning.
Our correspondent gathered that the EFCC officials, numbering about 16, came to Akure in two buses.
After reporting at the Divisional Police Station, they proceeded to cafes where they carried out their operations.
One of the cafés they visited was located on Oba Adesida Road.
It was learnt that the four officials who carried out the operation at the café first bought tickets and pretended to be browsing.
But suddenly they ordered all those who were browsing to raise their hands.
A source told our correspondent that a suspected yahoo boy escaped by jumping out through the window of a storey-building which houses a cafe.
The anti-graft officials screened 10 persons in the operation.
Another source said that those suspected were asked to log in to their e-mail accounts and the officials searched through the contents of their in boxes and sent items, while those chatting were thoroughly screened.
After about two hours of screening, four persons suspected to be Internet fraudsters were arrested and detained at the Divisional Police Station while the officials apologized to six persons who passed their tests.
It was also gathered that the manager of the café was arrested while some of the equipment used in the café were taken to the police station.
Our correspondent found that similar operations were also carried out in some other cafes.
