Good Tee-chan,we may be able to teach you certain things your Nigerian boyfriend may not have time to teach UI've actually heard some of the stereotypes at work but we all know better, there are good and bad people of every race, color or creed.Personally I have some real awesome African American(and white) friends from church and I love them dearly.

Word of advice, you better hold tight onto that Naija boy  and treat him right(hopefully he's worth all that)
If he seems to always want to be in charge, that's how most of our men are, they mean no harm, they know how to treat a woman right.

And all the men say, Amen.

Cool  Grin
It's kind of funny but when I had told him about this site, about me looking up some research on his culture, he kind of got upset, telling me that, "if you want to know something, ask me". I found that being weird. Normally, a guy would be happy that his girl is trying to learn more about his culture.

As we ve seen  on this thread, there is no unanimity of opinion on this issue, and one issue still stands, that  Akata  has a contextual meaning assigned to it by  a speaker.  How many times do  I get referred as an African  or Africans.  Do I have to always decipher it as being barbaric or backward. NO, In all fairness, its  always used in a derogatory way, but not everyone means to hurt my feelings

Akata is a demeaning word in ANY context. Do not be fooled. It's literal meaning is wild animal and it references AA in a deamening derogatory way. There is no positive way the word can be used in ANY context. Its always negative. Its like calling someone of African origin an Ape or a monkey. There is no way calling someone an Ape can ever be positive in any context.

And speak for yourself my brother, I do not prefer to be called Nigerian than African. Nigeria was coined by the British and has the word Niger in it. Its like saying Blackaria or Negroaria. But whatever floats your boat I guess.

And Drusilla is right, Nigga and Nigger are words that where flipped by AAs due to its long history in the States. Blacks calling other blacks nigga is not meant to be demeaning. Akata doesnt have the same contextual use and it has no such history behind the word.

Gbadex,

It's kind of of racist of you to say African Americans cry too much and make a mountain out of a molehill.

Didn't you notice President Bush making an announce putting a stop to telemarketers, calling Americans?

A person can simply hang up their phone.

Yet Americans cried and made a mountain out of a mole hill about having to even answer and hang up the phone.

So Congress and the President had to get involved.

Do try to keep in mind that African Americans are in fact Americans. It's our American culture that makes us cry and make a mountain out of molehill.

We understand that the sqeaky wheel gets the oil. It's not just African Americans. It's all Americans.

It's not "name calling", it's called language. Why should we use English words when speaking in our mother's tongue, you dimwitted tart
and I think it's hilarious that you actually think I give a shit on what you choose to call Africans. I wish I gave a damn but I truly don't. Sorry

Hypocrisy at its peak. Funny how they talk about how Africans should reject everything white people have taught them but ever willing to point out how they are superior to Africans.
