it was about 3yrs ago,on my way from warri to lagos inside a peugeot station wagon belonging to a popular transport company,av always have this phobia about travelling on nigerian road because of the recklessness of our drivers and the sorry state of most of our roads which are more of a death trap. The trip was quite cool until after Ore when suddenly the driver lost control of the stearing and the car started to move from the fast lane towards the slow lane and heading towards the ditch/bush and momentarily we heard ourselves saying the last prayer.fortunately the car came to a sudden stop and we all had to disemback fast, moment after we left the car it went up in flame and it was a miracle that no casualty was recorded!

This one happend to me some three years back. I was on an okada from Federal secretariat which was taking me to Wuse 2, and just as we were descending the slope towards Globacom office junction. I had seen the street light was green from afar and i told the okada guy to slow down. just as we got to the light, it just changed to red(u know these abuja street lights are not programmed well) and we couldn't stop. Unfortunately for us, a truck carrying building blocks just crossed the road infront of us. we slammed head-on into this truck. I had bruises all over my arms and legs, the okada guy broke his arm, the bike itself was a write-off, and i lost my phones due to the damage.

I experienced one yesterday. I was cruising in my Toyota Camry car about to climb Falomo bridge from Awolowo road in Ikoyi and one old woman carrying load on her head did not watch the road to check if it was free and ran into my car. Thank God for the ABS. The car came to a halt about 3 inches before the woman and everybody around already screamed to see a dead woman on the ground but thank God the woman was safe. I mmediately, i head a serious bang behind me. An okada man hit me real hard from the back and broke my bumper. The annoying thing was that the woman did not look back noticing that she did something wrong, just walked away.

Thank God i did not kill the woman!!!

How many should I narrate. Pedestrian? Vehicle? Motorbike? The last memorable one was May 2007. Ambling along on my bike, a guy careens around a blind bend, slams dead into mine. His bike becomes an instant write-off and he's oozing and bleeding from a hundred pores and cuts. I had one significant bruise with plenty of swollen body parts as testimony to the severity of impact. My bike was crushed only as far as the front rims/mudguard up to the instrument panel (which I smashed with my chest - remained sore for weeks). My rear tyres inexplicably blew-out. The bastard ran off (being in the wrong and for assaulting a policeman at the scene). Four weeks later, he was captured, tried and jailed.

My losses? Fractures in both wrists and a banged up chest. Moderate bruising and an ankle sore. Traumatised ego (my tenth anniversary of riding bikes without a single crash was merely two months away).

Lesson? When you're culpable in a crash. Stay put as much as you can. The guy wouldn't have been jailed as I wasn't going to press charges - not even to ask for a dime of his stash (he looked like he'd need it more).

A silly driver once refused to heed the complaints of we passengers. Remarkably, he was accelerating on an S-bend along the Oyo-Ogbomosho road, a bend which over the years, every sane man had deccelerated on. It appeared he was beyond the laws of physics.

The "Bang!!!" we heard was from the bonnet slamming into the rear wheels of a tipper which graciously didn't climb over us. Good thing for us as centripetal force may have tossed us into the bush.ravine anyway. Naturally, we all abandoned him with the car (notoriously a 504-wagon) and went our rspective ways. None were seriously injured (some bled) and typical for me, I was unscathed. God is good, ,

Lat word in: Two weeks ago, I was on my way to Abuja from Jalingo and a tanker had spilt some diesel on a road somewhere along the road (we were in Nassarawa). Pretty high road with fall-off being at least 50 feet in either direction. Another truck is sruck smack in the middle of the road (broken down, apparently). Traffic slows down to pass on either side and here-along comes another of those superman-drivers (driving an 18-seater Hiace van) who have found ways to defy physics. Careening round the bend, he tried to brake in time to avoid slamming into other vehicles. The snag? He brakes at the last possible moment (the "I-trust-my-leg" syndrome). Trusting his brakes in this instance wasn't quite good a judgement. He skids on the oil, swerves, topples over sidewards and slams hard into the ground only to lift-off and threaten to go over the shoulder into the ravine. Saviour? Another vehicle moving slowly ahead takes the brunt of the impact and saves everybody onboard; not from injuries however as passengers and driver alike bled freely.

Let's all remember that the laws of physics apply to all and sundry. Have faith but don't put yourself in a position in which it'll require divine intervention to make a turn-around. Heaven helps those whom help themselves, the saying goes.

Besides, the brakes, and indeed, the whole car is but a mechanical contraption. Rule of such things is they can fail in an instant - with or without prior warning. I'd rather be safe than dead. Fellow readers be sure to stay safe too. It takes too much effort to mourn.

I narrowly experienced one. As I was driving on afternoon, I turned to another street and decided to perform some 'stunt' before I knew what was happening I lost control and the car skidded but not to the bush. No damage was done to the car.

I hav had  about three experiences. correctionmore than three.

1. I was travellin to school  to resume a new semester along the Lagos-Benin Xpressway when suddenly i heard a loud noise, i looked forward in front of my bus nothing happenned. i and the other passengers then looked behind our bus only to see a car somersault thrice and it finally landed upside-down.The boot of the car opened  and books fell out, meaning there were students in that vehicle. Really felt bad but thank God nothing happened  to our bus.

2. Saw another  car somersault in front of d vehicle i was in. Though this time d occupants came out wihout delay.

3.  Was on my way to Lagos this time, the driver had stopped like twice previously to change a particular tireits like his tires were old, worn out and tired .I had dozed off, when all of a sudden i heard a loud noiise "GBOA" i opened ma eyes  and evryone in the bus was screaming JESUS,JESUS!!!! I then looked at the driver and he was holdin the sterring with all his might. We then crossed form our lane to the other side of the road i.e as if you're cumin from lagos. We narrowlly missed an oncomin benzor it narrowly missed us ,dnly to stop beside the culvert . Thank God the benz wasnt a trailer or a luxurious bus. we might have crashed headlong into it.

more stories to come later!! Grin

Quote from: lawyerchap on April 23, 2008, 02:20 PM
Returning from a night at the movies, was doing about 100km/h in my Golf GTI when i noticed a large truck parked dead ahead on the inside lane of the 3rd Mainland Bridge. I immediately switched lanes to avoid the hulking deathtrap.

But as i passed the truck my usually super-responsive GTI developed a mind of its own. It started heading towards the railings and no matter how much i steered it the other way, it just kept heading towards the Atlantic. I had time to say a quick prayer to God that if i was to die that day the car should remain on the bridge and not plunge into the Atlantic.

All this time i had held off from applying the brakes because i didn't know what was going on (the driving principle "when in doubt, both feet out"), but as the railings and the ocean loomed closer, i gently stepped on the brakes trying to make a controlled stop. This transferred the weight to the front of the car, causing the rear end to swing around and send me into a wild spin. The car slammed into the railings with the passenger's side and flipped over and over a couple of times before coming to rest on its side.

Tuface Idibia was still playing "My guy na your eye you go sharpen" when i climbed out of the car. There wasn't a scratch on me. Not even from all the glass flying around.

Kind people stopped to help and they explained to me that the truck's tank had ruptured and it had spilled diesel all over the bridge. They told me i had probably stepped on my brakes as i passed the truck and that was what made my car stop responding.

Before i finished salvage and rescue operations that night, about seven other cars fell victim to the slick surface with varying degrees of damage.

Insurance came through quite speedily though.

Wow thank God for your life and the life of every other person

I had an accident 7 years ago in which my sister lost her best friend and we lost our mum. We were coming from my secondary school then (FGGC Sagamu) and my mum and her friend came to pick her friend' s daughter( my sister's best friend), my sister and i. We were on Lagos-Ibadan expressway on our way to Lagos and suddenly two  of the tires burst. In the process of panicking, my mum's friend stepped on the brakes and as is expected, the car somersaulted so many times and then everything went blank because i don't remember anything else. By the time we all regained consciousness, my sister's friend was lying close to the road with blood gushing out of her ear, the car was on top of the upper part of my mum's body, I couldn't move my right arm because my elbow was damaged and i couldn't move my arm. My sister just had some scratches on her back! Well, to cut the long story short, my sister's friend died instantly and my mum died on the way to the hospital. I'm very grateful to God for our survival because i know its for a very special purpose but i now have a phobia for traveling on land!!!

Mine happned on may 1st. i went drinking with a friend in a place in maitama(abuja) we  left like 11pm so we could make it 2 work the next day. i went to drop him at Gwarimpa and headed home(jabi) i noticed the 4 lane road from gwarimpa to yaradua center was free so i decided to spinn my wheels. i wanted to make 170kmph on a 94accord (done it more than 4times before on the same car) was at 130kmph when i ran over a goat/dog. Not sure of the animal because it happned in a flash. stopped 100m from the incident i realised my radiator  was broken and no water in engine. i had 2 choices, 1, drive my car and hope my top doesnt burn or 2, park my car with a cool pionner deck, sony speekers ,16" rims etc and risk all that getting stolen. i drove my car home. the next day when i saw the damage(after the hag over) i screamed. got to the mech and the list of damaged stuffs.they were radiator, the electric fan, traficator, head lamp sitting, bumper, engine seat, water pump etc. also my number plate was rumpled

what amazed me was a  small animal of that size could cause such damage

i said i would never go beyond 120kmph and a week later i was on 140kmph(stadium-berger-mabushi road)

I had one brutal & bloody accidental in Good Friday (which was not all that good to me)April 14, 2006. We were about 21 passangers 18 adults and 3 children. we were going to Ado Ekiti, We were few kilometers from Ile-Ife when we one of our back tyres bust, although the driver was not over-speeding and in the process of controlling the vehicle to a halt, one of the panick passanger who eventually died started struggling the steering with the driver. The next thing the driver lost control, the vehicle started 'sulmasulting' for about 6 times. I only knew the fourth time when I passed on. I remain unconsious for about 10 minutes. When I woke up I found myself among the 13 dead bodies. We were rushed to OAUTH Ile-Ife, I was discharged 9 days later also to be re addmited to Igbobi, I had neck injuries, back injuries and one more reason for me to thank God is that all the medical personels that have been attending to me still wonder why I did not have spinal cord injuries. Up till today I sill go to Igbobi Every 30days. On the money aspect I have spent close to =N=500,000.00. Finally, I still experience back pain every now and then.

Accidents, huh?

I detest Lagos holdup, even in a taxi, so i decided to take a bike from Marina to Sheraton. We were breezing along merrily until on other bike just flashed in front of us and hit the concrete divider.
no, hit is the wrong word. Actually he slid into it, so there was this loooong trail of sparks and then some stuff flying all over the place. mercifully it was dark, so i didn't see the carnage. The guy definitely must have bought the farm.

Another time i was on my way to Lagos, we were parked by the side of the road waiting for the driver to get back from urinating. I started watching a jeep racing towards us at full speed. one minute i was admiring the clean lines of the jeep, the next minute i was looking at the underside of a jeep. it landed on its roof. Need i say more?
