Unless you want to live a cat and mouse marriage, this is a most unreasonable attitude.

Very true. Culture plays a very significant role here . . . we are from a culture where its almost a given that men are allowed to be a little abusive. There are even women who will tell you they prefer to marry a man who can "handle" them (read that to mean manhandle). Will such women be willing to admit spousal abuse?
