I Just Created A New Nigerian Website, What Do You Think?
« on: April 30, 2008, 06:21 AM »

I just helped create www.nigeriaport.com . I've worked on a lot of websites, but this one has to be the nicest I've been a part of. I think its the nicest looking Nigerian website out there. What are your thoughts? If you know of any nicer looking ones let me know because I've only seen the old looking type

Now that is an awesome site. Completely different from all the drab we have been used to seeing. This is very good design and actually a lot of thought was put into developing the site. Kudos!!

Is it just a news site or what? and what are the benefits of registering on your site.

i also think you should include these 2 pages
  • about site
  • Contact

The site looks professional. Well kind of like www.cnn.com. Nice work tho.

I hope you don't mind sharing the knowledge of how stories in the news section of the website are usually arranged in "folder like" url parameters i.e.

http://www.nigeriaport.com/story/2008/apr/thestoryfolder/

onlike the traditional;

http://www.nigeriaport.com/story/?year=2008&month=apr&story=thestoryfolder

Just a brief explanation will do or if you can help me out with resources, I don't mind.

Meanwhile kudos to www.nigeriaport.com

You did a great job.

Same thing I did on www.niglyrics.com

You use apache mod_rewrite.

Google it. There are lots of resources on it.

But no offense intended, I think nigeriaport is using a CMS. aint sure though.

It is called URL Rewriting. I don't know what Server side code you use for yours but you can easily achieve that using URL rewriting.

@kobojunkie

What do you mean by URL rewriting. That should also be the apache mod_rewrite for php coders

Like I said ,  depends on what server side technology you are using but the general concept is URL REWRITING.

Ya its using a CMS. Drupal. In my opinion its the best one out there, heavily modifiable to your needs and a huuuge support system. Beats developing from scratch any day, unless you're trying to build software for an online enabled missile or something.

Some really great sites use drupal as their foundation:
www.popsci.com
www.theonion.com
www.observer.com
www.myplay.com
http://www.mtv.co.uk/
http://warnerbrosrecords.com/
http://www.nowpublic.com/
http://www.savannahnow.com/
http://www.fastcompany.com/

But of course if you don't know html, php, css, mysql, and on occasion javascript and ajax, you can't make the drupal CMS look or function anything like the sites above, including nigeriaport. I'D definitely recommend drupal to anyone interested in messing around with a CMS though.

Pretty good, i must say. However, you could flesh it out a bit, put snippets of different categories of news on the home page, i read a lot of newspaper sites, local and foreign, and i like that i can get a taste of what's going on in every area without necessarily clicking links. Weather is good, but people would rather read news than weather, so perhaps it shouldn't be so prominent? Also, the google ads, a bit large, it's like quarter of the page. Basically its a great neat layout, but the REAL news only covers like half of the content page,  maybe you could work on that.

I really need to have a very good Nigerian site with valid information about business companies. I am from russia and dealing with petrochemicals. I would like to build good relations with real paint manufactures or good trading companies dealing with chemicals. To be presice - with solvents that can be used for making paints. We have butyl Acetate that I would like to offer nigerian companies and I really need help. Because there is a lot of spam in internet and we have a very bad telephone connection with Nigeria. I can speack with people only if I have their mobile telephone number or exchange mails if I have their e-maiils. Please help. Help. Like in the Fifth Element. Smiley
