How Do I Get Videos On Mp4?

I bought an mp4 which supposedly should be able to play videos,but every time I download videos on it,I suddenly find the video in the music segment and when I play it,the video plays like ordinary audio songs.All my attempts to transfer it to videos(amv) has proved impossible.Can anybody be of help here please?
