First i will take ziontrain on this post of his.

Fotodaddy, you just spoke my mind. These guys are making me think I am crazy!! Can somebody just tell me the security risk in posting CARFAX report or VIN number - haba!! If you have nothing to hide, post CARFAX report and/or VIN number and all secret of the car will out in the open thereby giving us legitimacy on this forum. Why can't we just learn to be honest and do the right thing. Being Nigerians is not an excuse for us to continue doing business in the filth of dishonesty abi?

You only need to see some of the recent CARFAX reports posted on the forum e.g. :

http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-132382.0.html

Now, i would like to know why you referred to an investigation thread i opened?  Huh

Now to fotodaddy and the VIN crying crew  Grin

Sometimes i look at some customers(car buyers) and laugh, You guys make so much noise about VIN and all to check carfax reports before you buy your vehicles. Cool. but even that is not a guarantee that the car you're buying is sound.
On the web there are so many sources/ways which dubious dealers use in beguiling potential buyers into buying cars that are salvaged/lemon.
What stops a dealer from fabricating VINs out of the VIN of a matching car that has a clean title just to sell a car? or you guys think it can't be done? if you think so then look at yourself in-front of a mirror and beat your chest saying, I'm a potential MUGU12

As for me, VIN checks are important, but don't mean a car is sound at point of purchase. For example:
A dealer in my area brought in some clean title cars(carfax clean), but when it was being brought down to the house from the port the car was involved in an accident with the 'danger mouses' of lagos roads(danfo buses) whose break failed. The car from behind was ruined, but thanks to his high level mechanics they restored this car to a clean state. That car didn't last two weeks in his showroom, it was swept off by a buyer.

now, tell me in that instance if the buyer checked the VIn on the so called CARFAX would he/she find any negative info? No! but he/she will happily pay for an accident-ed car, and be priding him/herself that it's a clean car.

I know that when buyers call me or visit me for cars i always tell them all i know that is wrong with a car(IF ANY). And the three cases i've had that went wrong after purchase i tried my very best to help them get the car back to shape. One we got back into shape, the other i replaced the car for him with another car.
The third one i left to take care of the issue as i made him know that i was unsure of the state of that particular part of the car, but even at that i made sure i referred him to my mechanic so he won't spend more than necessary. And dude is on the road and happy now.

And the issue of you making blanket statements that referring to 'some' dealers on this forum as fake is beginning to irritate me seriously.  Because if you sit-back and think/observe properly you would realize that there are new and old potential buyers on this site that just lurk without posting, and could go by your initial insinuations and run off this website JUST LIKE THAT, killing the patronage in this section of the website.
So when next you want to make this kind of thread, you name names so silent members can CLEARLY know who to avoid as not everyone knows how or bothers to sieve through 'bad beans' for the good ones.

Now do the right thing and name names and the exact instances/scenarios/car-post lets know what we have on ground.

Viperman,

I apologize for using your thread without permission. I promise you Isi Ewu when I come to naija  Smiley

My first question is this, is it wrong to provide CARFAX report and/or VIN number with your posting? Secondly, will it not give us some legitimacy if we provide this info to customers upfront? When you see posting like year 2000 car with 30,000 miles won't you wonder how come mileage is that low? VIN and/or CARFAX number will help clear the air at least.

Nope, but when someone is asking for VINs in the following instnces it shows the person doesn't know much about cars and can be easily deceived e.g:

- When buying a car from europe e.g toyota avensis, landrover freelanders e.t.c

- When buying a nigerian used car that has a manufactured date below year 2000.

But since they are customers i and some few dealers on here still try to satisfy them by providing these VIns when we can.

You're quite right, and it annoys me when people scream that the mileage of a car manufactured in, say 1996, with a mileage of over 100km, is high. This drives so many car dealers to use between 10-12minutes to reset mileage meters to 'wonderful' mileages that excite potential buyers.
And that is why anybody that has met me here will tell you that i always tell them that when buying a car, it's not the mileage or body neatness; but the Gear-box and Engine of a car that matters most.

Viperman,

Thanks for being honest. I am currently investigating getting equivalent of CARFAX in europe. I am suspect they have something. My opinion is that if customers complain for mileage of 100,000 for 10 year old car, let them go find lower mileage car and pay the price. I think those who quickly reset the mileage in order to sell the car are decietful people that we are trying to get rid of in this forum.

I believe it will not be far off to assume that about 70% of vehicles marketed on this forum are from US. hence, VIN and/or CARFAX is very crucial. Any dealer selling US cars and not willing to provide VIN and/or CARFAX report UPFRONT should be viewed with some reservation. Don't you agree with me?
