Online Purchases In Nigeria: My Experience
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:42 PM »

Hello wise ones,

Just want to share an experience with all of una. I'd come across a particular online store that was repeatedly advertised on Facebook. Na so I talk say make I see wetin them dey about. Eventually I made a purchase on the site (bought a USB card reader, less than 1k), entered my card details (was informed by d site not to enter details if i didn't see d Verizon logo; seemed genuine enough; also made sure i used a card which didn't have much balance in it). I was informed by the site that i would be contacted within 24 hrs. This was on May 1.

Five days later no word, na so i send mail ask them wetin dey. A day later I received a reply, telling me to go pay into their account at zenith bank. Man was I furious! Na so I fire them mail:

First of all;
No apology has been offered concerning your
delinquent service. Your website explicitly states
that a prospective buyer will be contacted by phone or
email within a 24hr period, and after about five days
of silence it took a mail from me to spur you into
action.

Secondly;
Is this not meant to be an online purchase? Why then
in the world do I have to go pay some amount into a
bank account? Haven't the transaction amount been
deducted from my account, the details of which I
entered on your site?

I actually do not know if I'm being scammed here, and
to think I actually went ahead to trust your business
against better judgement. I guess it's folks like you
that give Nigeria a bad name.

A day later(This morning). A knock on my door. A delivery. The folks actually came through!

The package was delivered along with an invoice, no questions asked. Why then was I asked to go and pay in a bank in the first place?

I don't know what to believe.

i guess it was a failure of communication between those at the front office and those at the back & maybe them underestimating their processing time,

Yes. . . it all depends on mode of presentation and many other things. I am in the process of ordering some books online via a nigerian bookstore and I am taking a great leap of faith.
I havent shopped online from Naija yet but I have paid for exams through a Nigerian firm & I was Impressed by the outcome!
