United States democratic Party Presidential hopeful, Senator Barrack Obama, has denied reports that he appealed to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta to cease hostilities in the region.
The campaign team for the Illinois Senator issued a statement to AllAfrica.com following reports that he appealed to MEND to curb violence.
“Senator Obama has not made any recent comment on the situation in the Niger Delta. The Senator does advocate an end to the violence in the region and urges all parties to establish a process for addressing the relevant issues and grievances in order to create the condition for peace and development,” the statement said.
A Lagos-based newspaper (not The Punch) had reported on Monday that, MEND, believed to be behind a series of attacks on oil installations in the region in the last two weeks, said. “Obama is someone we respect and hold in high-esteem”.
