There are over 400 on-going projects that when completed will deliver the result of that investment, and I’m telling you that these projects are due for completion come 2009, okay? But they haven’t received any funding or support since May 29, that’s 2007, so …

This is the statement that I am most interested  in getting more info on. What the  frell is the current guy waiting for??

I would tell You what he is  waiting for . He is waiting for the last year of his tenure . Then he would come out with his own designs and proposals. He would now campaign for a second term based on the grounds he wants to finish what he started. Of course , he would win (by hook or by crook). Then he would spend the next 4 years adding more embroidery to his designs and proposals. Before You say Jack, he would have wasted another eight years with nothing less than designs to show for them. And may I also add that the cost of the designs would be grossly inflated.

the funny thing here is that some of us write for writting sake while there are some paid labourers here.
when a man says white is black, trace the man. is either he is mad or he has been paid for the job.
one thing is sure, no sin will go unpunished.
whatsoever a man soweth, so shall he reap.
for me, obj has murdered sleep. if his son can tell nigerians that his father slept with his wife to give her contract, hmm am afriad.

Just wanted to appreciate the contributions of Afam, Debosky, Sky blue and some other dudes here. The discourse would have helped some people gain more understanding on the power sector probe.

I believe we can use the State apparatus to track the money paid and confirm any fraud for proper action but my prayer is for Yar Adua to drive the ongoing projects to completion ASAP.

I look forward to the day our media will do better job of investigative journalism and provide  information that will help drive corruption down and move the country forward rather than reporting to satisfy sectional and political interests.

God help Nigeria

@ chidichris
I am at a loss to see the relationship of of Obasanjo sleeping with his son's wife and failure to complete the power projects or pipe gas to the the completed plants.
When we make points this way we tend to lose track of the suject matter and whip up undue sentiments.

@ Igbonla

Abi oo!. Yardua needs not only complete the ongoing projects, he needs to initiate new ones. We have the money now in foreign reserve been used by JP Morgan (maybe) and co to fund projects in other countries.

I wonder what discussions he had with OBJ before he agreed to join the presidential race, to say am disappointed in Yar'dua's conduct so far is an understatement, he appears to be clueless.

One thing i feel is for certain is that we have had enough of the old guard. Those people who have been ruling the country either behind the scenes or in the spotlight since a bit after independence till date. It is just enough. To say that better could have been done during the 8 years of OBJ and try and sweep things under the carpet with "he tried" or "he was patriotic" would be one of the greatest understatements. Let us not extend the fact that there was more to this power fiasco than was initially insinuated to the fact that the projects were started late (so what was being done in the early years of the administration), that there is still emergency in just about every sector despite the fact that money was being thrown around everywhere. You can get your self familiarised with previous budgets if you want so you see what i mean, (roads, education, health, agric, transport, etc). The fact that thesame people are still holding unto power just echoes what is happening around the country whereby the potential of the youths are just simply being wasted. What a complete waste of human resources which might in the long run become our greatest asset. For the biggest black nation in the world Nigeria at this point definately seems to be big for nothing.
Concerning Yaradua and concerning the present, if he is indisposed and can't work then what is the Vice President doing? What are the ministers and the different sectors doing with the budget allocations they received? I mean hasn't the budget been passed? What are all the state governors doing? Sure things might be at a standstill at the federal level, whereby the legislators and the executive seem to be indisposed and that in itself is very irritating and frustrating, but what about states? Isn't their progress in lagos? So what about other states and their respective legislators?

I appreciate the investigation going on in the power sector much as I appreciate the effort of the house in doing this.
But what I and I believe nigerians will not appreciate is a situation where this is used as an avenue to witch-hunt or or bring to ridicule the man called obasanjo. I am not his fan. I fault some of his policies till tomorow, but if we are to be fair in our assessment of his administration, we will realise that his tenue is the only one in the past 25yrs with a coprehensive plan for the development of this country and it spreads to all sectors. see telecom, banking, health, economy, forieng dept etc.
The house should carry out their probe objectively but not maliciously. Also, they should focus a great deal on the present administration so that they don't leave too much for the next house to waste their lagislative time on.
Finally, I wonder what the present administration is doing. this is one year and noting appears to be happening. There is a lot of work to be done in this country and the earlier we start the better.

Classical and unadulterated hypocrisy.

The committee is still deliberating so no need to cast aspersions until they complete the job they are doing.

But it is ok to cast aspersions, accuse contractors of stealing, accuse OBJ of looting even when the power projects are still on going.

Nigeria is in serious trouble with people like these around.

Some of you here know how much I hate OBJ. I hate him with some kind of passion. I just don't like the man's style of leadership.

But after reading through his submission on the power project initiated under him, and with my little knowledge of contract management, I need not go to a soothsayer to interprete the clear handwriting of the man. I had to give him credit for going this far to explain to the general public and those who care to listen and reason what he did to tackle the power problem in the country, while he was at the helm of affairs in this country. Even Debosky and Afam (fellow old timers and foes on nairaland) acknowledge this fact that much. They took their time to even explain to everyone here, what I ordinarily will not (and may be cannot) do. And Debosky even went as far as giving graphic details, so that those of you who are in JSS 2 can understand!

What elso do you people want? If you want OBJ arrested and jailed, fine! but please substantiate this with facts before you look stupid to the whole world. I think I've read enough of this power thread. Me I don tire sef.

Bros Oruwe, migwo, please take time read the man tory now. See whether the thing make sense first before you begin yab me.

Good question for the state governors and even the vice president there. But like many have made me come to understand to this day, it seems on the major part progress in Nigeria has to somehow come from the main office and it trickles down to states and LGA in time. Lagos is definitely a shining example of where things ought to be but we all know that expecting others to follow suit is not the way things happen in that country.

For @Ono, I am glad you finally see that praising yar adua and then crapping on OBJ is ridiculous. OBJ did do good in that country but there is nothing wrong with investigating him at all and your JSS2 reference up there has nothing to do with this at all. Basically OBJ did do some things but even he acknowledges that some things did go wrong every now and then. Due to the fact that nothing is done in the open in that country, don't you think blowing it up open is the best way to  get the people involved, I mean until we have something like the FOI act and then have direct access to information such as this in the future so we can do the investigating ourselves as Nigerians? My point is, if the man is clean or dirty, considering we the people ( over 120 Million of us) do not know this and this tribunal or whatever you may call it, is our chance of getting to understand what went on during the last administration and what we can do to avoid past errors so we can get things moving faster in our democracy.

Nigerians have a right to be frustrated. We live like blind people in that country. Information is only made available to the public when offices are investigated. Why?? That is not supposed to be the case but unfortunately, that continues to be the way it is in that country. Even companies are not as open as they ought to be to this day. Heck, try call Nigerian customs and inquire about information and you get the run around instead. It is ridiculous and so we are bound to get frustrated.

One of the attribute of problem solving is ability to express opinions openly and willingness to listen without having a prprepared answer. OBJ has replied to allegations against we should allow the rule of law to take its full course. None of us has the facts it is always easy to point fingers.  it is not only OBJ problem it is a nigerian problem and you cannot change a bad system overnight. anybody found to be culprit should prosecuted. Anybody calls that calls another stupid or foolish is passing judgement and that is corruption. How can you call someone your father's age foolish is that how you talk to your parents at home which should respect others. At least with all your smartness you cannot know more than the former president about Nigeria should be run.

wow! i am happy with the love many of us are showing to the almighty obj.
the more surprising thing was why we were all rejoicing when alams was impeached and arrested immediately. how atiku was judged and his case was gazzeted within days.
it is a natural law that what goes arround must come arround. if those fast laws that obj initiated were good enough to catch criminals then, i still believe nigeria is still the same.
the masses have been on the recieving end and most of us keep on praying to God to visit leaders which he has been doing directly and through their families.
why did obj probe abacha's administration if probe is now a crime?
how will the panel get to the truth if all of them are now sick to show up to the panel?
why is obj telling nigerians his power stories when he had in the past told us that he does not believe nigerian press?
how come obj is not tired of ruling nigeria even after so many years in active politics?
he has ruled nigeria as a military president, a civilian president and now the chairman BOT pdp indirectly controling the shadowman.
people get bored with the same name over this long period of time. we all need change. the climax of obj's madness was revealed in his third term bid.

My submission is this:

If OBJ really was dedicated to solving the power problem, he would do everything to achieve it within the period in review.

If delay in passing relevant bills was the problem, if he expended half of the resources he squandered on 3rd term agenda on it, we wouldnt be talking about the bills now.

He made himself Petroleum minister. Some of us thought that was to ensure good management but let's wait and see the outcome of the oil probe.

It's either he lacked the managerial skills to handle such sensitive and capital intensive matters or he was not interested in bettering the lots of Nigerians.
Either ways, he wasn't a good president for a country as resourceful and important as Nigeria.

Try both. And yes he was a poor, poor president. With a role model like Adedibu he was always going to end up a despicable individual.

What a warped sense of logic and procedure. Sorry, if my point rubs your convoluted sense of reasoning the wrong way.

However, the correct sequences of events for any committee hearing is:
1. Definition of a problem(lack of power despite spending so much).
2. Gathering of evidence.
3.Public or private hearing; where there may be claims and counter claims/allegations and counter allegations.
4. Committee delibration/debate.
5. Reports.
6. Presentation and possible adoption of majority or minority report by the whole house.

As far as I know, the House committee is still between 2&3. Wild claims and allegations are not uncommon, but with appropriate due process, the truth usually emerges.

The problem with fools like you is that you're stuck on #3, and have refused to see the whole picture.
You want the House committee disbanded and the members flogged for disrespecting your Baba--- abi-o.

The laws of our country should be bigger than anyone individual.

it is becoming funny that a probe panel is now disrespectful because they are about touching the untouchable. efcc will soon be tagged foolish for their invitation of Iyabo. now the big question is; what is wrong with our war against corruption whenever they get to the objs?
the objs of our time have murdered sleep.
Fela in one of his tracks commented on obj's organisation of 1979 election but we were all seeing fela as a mad man but april polls forced us back to out thinking corners.
efcc, the best thing that happened to nigeria is now calling on iyabo while a power probe just invited obj to testify. common, clinton was made to coment on his administration's actions while in office over the 9/11 attack so why won't saint obj do a simple thing and take his story to the birds.
even if he spent 1 naira let him go and explain that.
i hope he will be there as a minister of petrolium and the president of nigeria when the probe gets to oil?

Unfortunately, our emotions have gotten in the way of the beautiful discussions on the power probe.

Should we accept that protocol should be discarded simply because we are so pained with the discoveries at the probe panel? Is it then ok if policemen continue to use force to arrest citizens or arrest the wife to get the husband to come out of hiding?
I fully support getting former office holders to give account of their stewardship (whether clerks or Presidents) and I don't think this should be difficult to achieve if we stop playing politics with all of our decisions.

I believe in strengthening the apparatus of government to function as established and also looking forward to the day when our policemen will be saying 'sir' to citizens while reading their offences to them.

The bashing must continue until we can get some respite from the darkness that has enveloped the nights.

God bless Nigeria.

Royalicon,

We are not after recovering money but getting value for money spent or kept.

From various testimonies in the public hearing, there are obvious frauds and avoidable delays in the whole project.

No wonder Yaradua doesn't want to spend extra N1 unless these anomalies are rectified and the true position of things determined.

In a way, I suspect Yaradua just passed probe thing to the reps to do, so he's not seen to be probing his benefactor.

Did anybody watch the interview of the Minister of State for energy on AIT this morning?

The whole defence put up by people here for OBJ was rubbished by the minister.

The minister stated clearly that there was no feasibility study document for any of the projects and funds were approved with no justification. She specifically mentioned the omotosho, papalanto, geregu, and mambila projects.

The projects did not take into consideration how  gas would be made available to the turbines and the existing gas infrastructure on ground.
the minister's summary was nothing short of calling the projects "white elephants'' with little or no value added, even when the projects are completed.

afam,
no matter how much u are paid, obj can never be greater than nigeria.
the man was clever in selecting his own people otherwise the story would have been a different one.
if u are familiar with the achievements of the past administration, tell us the difference between the states of our roads, security system, power supply and then equate them with the funds spent with the past eight years.
obj told us nigerian press are not good so while telling his power stories through them now.
he shld go to the panel and tell the stories.
iyabo is tired of running. they are good people so why is she running away from her father's efcc.
as long as there is God in heaven, obj must pay.
one day, we will be mearnt to know why okonjo iweala was removed from the finance ministry.
he was lawless that he select and reject at will. i want congratulate former abia state governor for his foresight over this monster - obj.
