Rome was not built in a day. I personally do not blame OBJ for "jack". A lot of damage has been done to this Power project and it is not going to be an easy task fixing it. The problem here is dwelling on the past when there is a lot of work to be done. For how long do we plan on doing this? I read the letter and I feel there are more important stuff to worry about other than what a past ruler did wrong. No one is talking about the oil companies refusing to join in providing power to sell to NEPA, no one is talking about the delay  and hold up the projects are facing . Why can’t we all just focus on things that would help solve and alleviate our problems? What is nailing OBJ going to do to us? It definitely wouldn’t put food on the table, or give us the power a lot of us need. I don’t think 4 to 8 yrs is enough time to fix the problem at hand. Our question should be how the present government wants to build on what we already have. Like I said I don’t expect them to fix the problem totally, but I expect them to take us a little higher. I care less about any stolen money right now, except I am sure of getting ever dime back. Even still, what is done is done and there’s a whole lot more to do.

I usually don't respond to comments from people with only 1 post, because they are either new to the spirited discussion going on here, or they have changed their login ID so many times that they think we don't know who they are.
For saying all the things you said either out of ignorance, stupidity or tribal bias, I would ask you one simple question: do you have regular power supply in your neighbourhood?

rome was not built in a day then how long did rome take to? eternity?
give him sometime, accepted but how long? at 48 years of nigeria, we are still saying rome was not built in a day.
the only way rome could be built over night is allowing our rulers to turn into trilonaires after one month on seat.
cotonou, mali, senegal, cameroun south africa, ghana and every other countries of the world both richer and poorer believe that they can build their own rome in a day for the interest of the citizens.
nigeria till date remains the highest buyers of electricity generating plants - what a shame?
United Arab Emirates was once borrowing money from nigeria and today every ruler in nigeria has investment there and it is serving as a must visit country as soon as you become a ruler in nigeria yet rome was not built in a day.
malaysia got her first palm fruit from nigeria and today malaysia is the highest palm oil producers in the world. yet nigerians are still saying rome was not built in a day.
please tell nigerians how long it takes to build rome.
a whole full eight years was not enough to make a tangible move towards a steady power supply and obj is still telling nigerians his story. one year gone on yar adua, only reasonable thing he has done is speech of hope on the pages of our newspapers, an embecile has already started a third term agenda for him which will soon take over the polity of nigeria-rome was not built in a day.
i pray this topic to end here because it is a sad news to humanity that a man who had every free hands he needed as a president and petrolium minister for eight years ended up with his power story.

I don't know which is worse: OBJ's ineffective government or the excuses for failure being advanced by the Oluwafuntos of this World?

naijaking,i believe you can read. Keep dwelling on the past oh, and tell me how far that would take you. Of course i don't have regular power supply in my neighborhood, but  how will bashing OBJ help us out with that. Omo sit down there and be saying OBJ did this or did that. One favor; alert me when that makes a difference or when you get the stolen money back ,whichever comes first.

@ naijaking1

Which is more profitable: spend two years (remember one year has elapsed already with little or nothing done) all in the name of 'probing' the past 8 years while twiddling your thumbs and letting things worsen (from ~3000MW in 2007 to ~800MW now) or adopting a pragmatic approach of completing the projects while doing your investigations? Excusing Obj is not really the issue here, unfortunately a lot of you seem to have been blinded by that - if Yardie spends 2 years 'discovering ' what went wrong, how logn will actually be used in tackling the issues? Two years? Oh wait, his second term right?

No one is excusing OBJ, but to deny that he made significant improvements to the power infrastructure (albeit uncompleted) cannot be controverted. If he is found to be culpable by all means punish him - one thing he failed in has emerged anyways, his desire for complete control and failure to heed World Bank advice in securing competent project management personnel to oversee some of the projects, as well as loose/faulty scoping of the projects in which ancillary needs were not properly taken into consideration.

Even in spite of that, I do not think an entire year had to elapse with no action on the part of government all in the name of 'finding out' - three committees have been initiated to advise the government, and all we hear from them is a reversal back to NEPA - to create a board and MD for the behemoth again - after laws were passed to split the company up into manageable units? So that when there is a burst pipe at Egbin, you would, once again, need approval from 3 boards of directors just to replace the pipe. Those are the issues we need to talk about more

The licensing of IPPs, the creation of enabling laws to allow more participation in power generation, creation of a power regulatory agency to oversee the industry and set appropriate standards, proper conceptualization of a way to unbundle power generation and make it more manageable - those are perhaps less tangible parts of the 'power story' but they are crucial nonetheless to a complete understanding of the happenings during the OBJ era.

@Debosky
Investigating past mismanagement/mistakes/misdeeds and construction of better power generating stations for our country are not mutually exclusive. Both can be pursued simultanously.

No society goes forward without first appreciating its past--- success, failures, mistakes, crimes, heroic deeds, etc.

The main reason to investigate OBJ's power failures is not necessarily to punish him as a person, but for the country to learn and appreciate his efforts, or lack thereof. It's a guide for the future. It's not an opportunity to interpret the situation from different tribal perspectives.

Despite all attempts, there is paucity of results for OBJ to justify his 8 years in office in the power sector.

Nairaking,

Why are you complaining, we all know that yaradua like his predecessor was unprepared to be president. Yaradua was was about retiring to his village was hand picked to be president, how do you imagine he would know how to begin to solve the problem of Nigeria. That is why one year after he his still constituting committees on the power sector, the aviation sector, the electoral sector and in fact every other sector, he his asking Nigerians to help him out on what to do. People in Nairaland are free to make recommendations to the various committees.  Imagine Obama constituting committees on how to reform the health sector one year after being inaugurated, i am sure he knows exactly what he want to do as president and he has to convince the american citizens about his plans before he can even gain nomination but in nigeria the standard campaign rhetoric is; I will provide you with power within 6 months (although Yaradua was cleaver as he did not commit himself, he said i will declare a state of emergency within 6 months, please can lawyers in this room explain the meaning of that promise, i understand what it means to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria or a part of it, but to declare a state of emergency in the power sector or the education sector or any other sector for that matter. Is it in our constitution?

Other promises are; I will provide good roads, i will fight corruption and there will be no sacred cows, i will do this and do that. And he get voted for on our behalf, then the problems of what to do begins.
Remember OBJ also went through the same thing as he was catapulted from prison to aso rock, so he spent the first term traveling the globe looking for the elusive foreign investor because he is of the opinions foreigners would invest where locals fear to thread. It took OBJ another term to have an agenda, as as his reasoning goes that was why he needed a third term to complete his agenda.
So wait until Yaradua's second term, them the reports of all the committees would have come in and he would then start implementing a plan, but then he would need an extra term to complete the plans.

So Nairaking and the likes; DO NOT BLAME YAR'ADUA FOR BEING TOO SLOW, it is the nature of Nigerian politics

If you don't rest the responsibility of the Nigerian ship on its captain, the ship will simply float around aimlessly until it sinks. It's not blame, it's assigning responsibilty. Yardua is in office today, because of only one man and one man alone:OBJ.

real men don't tell stories. obj is telling us today his power stories which symbolizes failures. he has more stories to tell as it relates to our roads, security and the sale of govt properties.
we will equally be happy to hear his story of moji- his son's wife now that he has turned into a story teller. he shld also not forget to tell us his third term story, his april polls stories and the odi massacre stories. wonderful story teller

I must tell you that NAIJAKING1 has talked beautifully in his contributions on 'My power story' by OBJ, but he didn't really consider ONE important point – ‘The Natural Definition / meaning of Darkness’,
i will like to be very brief here as i won't like to be known as talking too much, b'cos i know Nigerians are already living with destiny, some say destiny do change, I don’t know much about that.
According to U.N recent report, between early 70 till date Nigeria made three hundred plus billion dollars from oil, and the report said our Government accounted for only 20% of the said figure. Very sad and embarrassing,. with all our messiah politicians? Unbelievable, I know the time will come when Nigerians will start asking of the remaining Balance of 80%, that time ppl like Obj will be called first, after all he has been around for long, and if not around again, Iyabo should have some stories to tell, she should try to inherit other national antecedents from Dad,
you and i know what darkness is all about in the bible OR Q'uran, and you will agree with me that when somebody is kept in darkness of any form, many things would have been achieved by the perpetrators,  OBJ and other rulers of the past know why they kept Nigerians in darkness, after all without Naija in Darkness, Ota Farm would not exist, Babagida Business Empire and his multi million dollars golf club would not be told and celebrated in Nigeria dailies.

So these feofle want to watch telefeson eber minute to know wetin I de go on for eber where around the world? Kai shege. Me i go die instead (That’s Abacha Taking during his days) when he over held Nigerians yarning for power stability…

Many Nigerians don't know how much millions of Dollars Generator Distributors are spending in our upper and lower houses to see that darkness be included in our National identity till thy kingdom comes, wake up my people,  Money for power stability can only be invoked from those spirits, supernatural politician, and retired officers,  Maybe by revolution, but i don't pray for that in Nigeria, let me take a stick of B & H first, to be continued,…

What needs correction is your understanding of how long each of these rulers served. OBJ is the only person to have held power for about 3-4 years as a military dictator, and then another 8 years as President and petroleum affairs ministers.
Shagari-- ruled for 4 1/2 years
Buhari--2 years(I'm not sure)
Babangida--6-7 years
Shonekan--6 months
Abdulsalami--about 1 year
While I may not be quite sure of the longevity of these other rulers, I am very sure that none of them ruled as long as OBJ.
Remember what they say about 'to whom more is given more is expected'
Why is it a crime for Nigerians to expect more power from the OBJ administration?

for fear of NEA taking light before i finish this ost, i shall make it brief. OBJ should be hung by his nuts. if after 8 yrs in ower, all he has to show for it is incomlete projects (that didnt sto him from going on a commissioning spree b4 leavin office) then he is even dafter than i thot.
if u are given a contract to deliver , say vehicles , do u exect kudos if you bring in the cars but cant find thhe steering wheels.
for one who promised so much, he delivered very little. perhaps if he spent more time fixing the situation instead of trying desperately to stay in power for ever. Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world must hold him accountable for wasting 8 years of our life.

Yar'adua said OBJ was wrong to use the excess crude account to finance the NIPP power projects without the backing
of the National Assembly. He used this as an excuse for stop funding the NIPP projects.

Now, we are hearing he is planning on withdrawing $5 billion from the same excess crude account for his power sector
rescue mission, again, without the backing of the National Assembly.

So much for his stand on abiding by the rule of law  Undecided

Now the first Nigerian graduate president has gone back to the OBJ farmers (Agbe!) wisdom/strategy/style

Drawing money from the excess crude account in this manner is effectively saying the last one year was wasted on granstanding.

What does the emergency declaration even mean sef! Yar'adua has not defined it for us to understand what is to be acheived as if the situation is not already alarming without the declaration.

For me the lements of an emergency should include COMPLETE cancellation or waiver of custom duty on all components of an IPP, speedy amendment of the law on power sector to allow states or even local goverments to issue licences to IPPs in their domain as done worldwide (i shouldn't have to go to Abuja for licence to provide power for all homes factories and worshops in my Ifako/Ijaiye LG) subject to national safety rules and standards. Also immediate disbandment of the NEPA/PHCN board recently contituted by Yar'adua and speedy unbundling and sale of NEPA installations

Some of these should constitute emergency measures if we don't want to continue the way hoping to get a different result (Insanity) Shocked Grin

My sentiments exactly! Yardua is walking around this power issue as if he is in a daze, confused, or even retarded. Picking him up and making him president is going to be counted as one of OBJ's worst mistakes ever.

Most experts agree with you that total disbanding of the huge and inefficient outfit called NEPA or PHCN is the key to providing regular power for Nigerians. The law should be changed so that each LGA, state or region could supply themselves with electricity.
