@ darfur

Yeah, we have our own history especially in terms of the Northern Madness of which I have been a victim too. But then it still does not make it right or justifiable. The Almajiris rising up and beheading the christians because of a cartoon is as bad as the South Africans killing their African neigbours because they think we are all criminals. Just as the Northern elite Almajiris were condemned for the act carried out on christians , so would I condemn the act carried out by the South Africans.

@ Kobo

I missed that part of the story were some Ghanians were lynched and killed Undecided Maybe I went to the rest room when that part was told. Grin

I was in Ikorodu when it happened and I can remember some of the Ghanians on our end got beaten out on the mainland and decided the best was to leave. Some tried to hide out but decided in the end to leave cause of the news of more unrest coming.

This is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard in my life. I watched this on BBC three days ago and today the situation isn't better. According to what was shown on the BBC world service today the mostly affected people are Zimbabweans, Congolese, Malawians and Burundians.

They ( south africans) are enjoying international recognition because of their sizeable white population. I think they need to be reminded that. It they give the rest of the black nation this impression that they are bastards then the consequences will last more than a generation.

The "foreigners" they don't want in their country are blacks. I think Nigerians should leave their country for them. I can sympathise with all those affected by this most riduculous human act. This is south african's inhumanity to africa.

I just hope that the Nigerian government would show a great sense of responsibility to our fellow Nigerian brothers and sisters who have been affected by this disgraceful act.

The Nigerian government has failed its citizens. They fought for the causes of South Africa while her citizens. Today South Africa is a powerhouse and has suddenly become a war zone for Nigerians.  Even Ghana is requesting for an obscene amount of money from foreigners, including Nigerians to start a business. Shame!.

Was chatting with a Naija friend living in SA and here's what he had to say:
----------------
its xenophobia, the black south africans feel immigrant foreigners are taking their jobs, nigerians in particular are running things as usual from credit cards to drugs, there's lots of legit stuff too that we're doing which they can't seem to comprehend, so , they got serious beef and want to run all foreigners out of town
, just like the Ghana-must-go crap we did too way back, but look at Ghana now, constant power, tighter economy and now they've found oil, who's laughing now?
----------------
Well, i guess it's time for Nigerians to leave foreign countries and come back home. Let's turn our own country into something good too.
Simple.

See what is happening to Nigerians in Spain, in Italy, in Britain, in China and everywhere all over the world because of lack of proper infrastructure in Nigeria and no opportunities! I thought this post was a joke! Haba SA? What nonsense! No be them full VI? But see:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=E14BeQp0W4w

This is just beyond ridiculous! We are like scapegoats for bias, pseudoslavery and all the bad things they can think of to label black people just by virtue of being Nigerian. It's not cool anymore to be rascist to "black" people in general so since the Nigerians are linked to fraud and all these other negative images hey! It's cool to be inhuman to them! Of all places, SA?! Wow! We NEED to fix our country. We NEED to fix our country. WE NEED to fix our country. If country no spoil wetin man dey fine for abroad? Heiiuuwww GOD! Father protect Nigeria and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. Jesus must have been Nigerian.

These pictures are definitely terrible pictures and the problem all comes down to the fact that in Africa, the government has failed it’s people over and over and until the people start demanding change and actually fighting the right battles, we are likely to see more and more of this happen in parts of Africa and Nigeria maybe next. We are just feeling the effect of the so called global food crisis linked with increase in energy cost. As time goes on, tensions are bound to run high if the situation worsens and people turn around and take out their frustrations on those around them.  The problem we see in South Africa, today, is a result of years of pent up frustration and the situation in Zimbabwe, which should not be, only fuels such.

This is just terrible.

So, S African govt should abdicate the  functions of law enforcement agency to gangs and crooks simply because  immigrants are the prime targets? Any statistic to show that immigrants are the cause of the all ills in SA? Why is it always the fault of the of weakest in our societies even when we chat from our comfortable homes and couches? Why do immigrants who are powerless get blamed for all evils even when some of us live as immigrants in foreign lands don't get treated that same way. Doesn't SA have laws on how to tackle crimes and illegal immigration. Why should we provide comfort to these barbarians who are enemies of the state and humanity?

Did Nigerians ever treat Liberians and Sierra Leonans that way?Did Nigerians kill Ghanaians? By the way Ghanaians also kicked Nigerians out.  Folks come here to make a flawed argument that immigrants are causing all the problems as if they had any statistics to back it up.  If it had been whites against blacks  folks would shout racism or genocide.  This was the same premise used by Hitler  " Jews are our woes" Another scar in their efforts to bring the whole world to  SA 2010?  I wonder what FIFA would do since Nigeria 95 was cancelled because "cholera" that was cloaked in political issues with Abacha. I could  not find  it righteous in my heart that some Nigerians who left Nigeria for greener pastures overseas are blaming these Nigerians. If you live in EU, Asia, N/America  and  some scrupulous Nigerians do something bad, do you say that all Nigerians will be treated as bad and beaten by others?

I do not know of any decent society where people are killed before they are tried ? Show me the facts not sentiments.

I wonder when the daft blacks in that Country will learn their lessons.Do they intend to create more jobs by killing immigrants?Wow its sad and i blame no one but the Government.I hope this serves as an eye opener to Nigerians back home who think staying 9jeria is like living in bondage.Hopefully we get our acts together and move forward.I believe it is high time Nigerians in South Africa find their way back home.Wouldnt be a bad idea if the FG sends South African companies packing.I think we have had enough as a Country.Lets be firm and say no to rubbish.

The number of immigrants killed in South Africa pales in comparison to the number of INNOCENT Nigerians murdered in the streets of Nigerian cities and then set afire by screeching mobs acting spontaneously in response to false allegations of petty theft, witch-craft or genital snatching.

Advice to visitors in Lagos :  Don't cry "thief" if someone picks your pocket, because if the thief gets to shouting LOUDER accusations that YOU are the criminal, by-standers will make it their business to gang up and assist the pick-pocket in beating his victim comatose and setting him or her aflame with a gasoline-filled car-tire, after which there will be NO arrests.

Jakumo,

Did u check SA crime statistic? Are you saying that some SA rogues  killing Nigerians is Ok since Nigerians are killed daily Nigerians?  SA has higher crime rate amongt South Africans and that should not be  the reason why they should kill immigrants period.

For whatever it's worth, I as a S.African along with everyone that I've talked to about this, am appalled, embarrassed, hurt, depressed and damn angry about what's happening here.  Cry  I haven't heard many incidences of Nigerians being at the receiving end of this but I'm sure there are some that have been attacked. Mainly we hear of attacks on Zims, Malawians & Mozambiques as they are the ones living in informal settlements alongside other poverty stricken SAns. There are a lot of things to blame but first and foremost the government is to blame. We have been living with other African immigrants for years now with no problems, but recently had an influx of millions of Zimbabweans fleeing the situation in Zim. What the gov should've done was to create proper refugee camps and gave them asylum, but they did nothing! Every day thousands of Zims and Mozambicans cross the border illegally risking crocodile infested rivers in the North and Big 5 territory in the East and these people are ending up in informal settlements where already the situation is dire with poverty and lack of services. These refugees then have to compete with locals for whatever scraps are to be found - they do jobs for half the wages that locals would do them and so obviously people hire immigrants instead of locals. Our gardener is Malawian, my friends' nannies are Zimbabwean etc and yes, they work hard and do not expect Pension funds or unemployment fund unlike locals (can't blame the locals for this anyway, it is their right). People should ask themselves why this situation is happening now. Why not 10, 5 or even 2 years ago? The only major change that has occurred is the sudden and unbridled influx of millions of refugees that have been incorporated into an already struggling society. Whatever the cause, there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of evil backlash from S. Africans.

And just by the way, it is not only foreigners that are now being attacked but also minority language groups like the Venda, Shangaan and also SA women who are married to foreigners (like me). Cry  It might not be worth much but I apologise sincerely for whatever is happening to Nigerians and other foreigners in my country. And the stupid thing is that we have white foreigners too but these blockhead criminals only attack other black people - self-loathing at its best. Angry

I'm South African and guys I'm also so ashamed of what is happening here. Most of the people who are doing this are the poor ones, who feel that foreigners are taking their jobs and also contributing to the hifh crime levels. Well some are contributing to the crime levels and also drugs, but that does not justify what's happening here today. Pres Mbeki and former Pres Nelso Mandela has also condemned the xenophobic attacks.

The government is now going to send the army into the township to deal with the barbaric thugs who killed people. Guys please not all of us are like that. I've lived with Nigerian, Ghanaian, Ivorian brothers for 6 years now and they're all great people. I've been to Accra and Abuja and now I'm scared to come back there because now I don't know how you gusys are going to treat me. Not all South Africans are bad,  both Black and White.

I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE FOR WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOUR PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY.

Nigerian risked their lives and resources to deliver the S.A from the shackless of Apathied but check out the ways u r now paying us back! But Nigerians that i know would not retaliate!

@Malaika and Mpele, Thankyou for at least coming out and offering an apology. That shows the fact that there are still some with their humanity intact.

I have to tell you, as one who grew up watching the aparteid era and  having genuine joy when the situation ended and Mandela was released, I am utterly dissappointed and ashamed of these South African individuals.

We stood with you at your hour of darkness. Many Africans worldwide took your plight as our own.
Where is the sympathy for those who have fled to your country for safety?

I have not been more saddened by a piece of news in a long time.

@ Nigerians who are justifying this, did you know there were also some Ghanaians killed? Do you recognise the fact that these S. Africans have also committed criminal acts, contravening their own laws? While you condemn Nigerian criminals (theives and conmen), you give your support to South African ones (murderers, theives and arsonists).

You can't even see clearly because of your own self hate.

I seem to be missing something here. Where these Nigerian deported or physically attacked/killed?

How does this relate to the Ghana must go saga? Or indeed the Nigeria must go which proceeded it?

How does deporting people relate to burning people alive and beating them to death? It has nothing whatsoever to do with eachother, its just a case of the usual Nigerian attitude of late to justify every negative thing metted out to Nigerians, simply because of how they themselves  dislike Nigeria/ns.

How about the Somalis and Zimbabweans who were killed? Was this "just desserts" too?

If next week, we hear of South African businesses being burned in Nigeria, which one of these people will be saying, after all they did it to us? None of them thats who.

My heart goes out to every individual who has either lost life, possession or family from this absolute tragedy.
The poor in South Africa have erupted into xenophobia and frustration  simply  because their own government has failed them. Foreigners (well at least the black ones) have been made  scape goats.

SA earned the title of one of the most violent places in the world without help from immigrants, they are fooling themselves if they think  the real issues don't lie with their own populace.

well and timely said londoner,

this is exactly what I'm trying to tell to kobojk, that deporting people is one thing, killing and hactching is completely different and it is barbaric. No excuses can be accepted.

his equating influx of immigrants to the high rate of robbery, crimes etc  in SA in my opionion is grossly wrong.

people have been immigrating long before we were born and they will continue to, such is our nature.

Guys from what I've gathered no Nigerian has been killed. Most of the people who were killed are Zimbabweans. I'm not condoning it but most of the ZIMBABWEANS are the ones who usually commit robberies and gruesome murders. To attest to this, South Africa used to have one of the lowest crime rates in the World, untill 1994 when government allowed foreigners to come to this country willy nilly! The problem here is that we have 20% of the population that is very poor and mostly black. Most foreigners (Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, Malawians, Kenyans and Somalians etc) when they come to South Africa they amongst the poor South African who are already struggling to get basic services from government. Toi South Africans it seems as if the foreigners are competing with them.

When you go to the cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, etc thats where you find Nigerians. Nigerians don't normally settle amongst the poor South Africans. They usually settle with us the Black Middle class in the cities. The South African black middle class is basically educated and also open minded. That is why there is no friction between us and the Nigerians. There are some bad ones who sell drugs, but not all of them are like that. It now goes back to the point that not all South African are like those barbaric fools who go around slaying innocent people.

As far as I'm concern there has been only 22 murders and there is no Nigerian in that number. The guywho posted this thread was lying and I can sense an element of hate in him. He is trying to create animosity among good South Africans and good Nigerians.

The reason that was brought up was to make sure people understood that we have in our own history rioted in similar fashion, to have immigrants sent back. I am not sure if you know this but yes, some ghanians were killed in riots. Stores and schools were burnt down in some areas of lagos in protest. Some Liberians were lynched by mobs in yaba as well. So it is not like we have not done similar before. I believe this is for those who claim Nigerians can never do such.

No need to post lies to corroborate anything.

There were no riots to have Ghanaians sent back during the Ghana must go period.
Please show us when Liberians were lynched in Yaba. I lived most of my life around there and I knew a lot of Liberians who came to lagos at the time.
