The Problem Of Nigeria And The Zeal Of Nigerians To Go Abroad
« on: May 19, 2008, 12:44 PM »

The rate at which Nigerian youths are leaving the country for overseas is tremendously on the high side. A close look at the cause of this mass exodus, which we all see as a national problem, could be traced to lack of employment and employment programmes for the able and disable, lack of security of life and property, lack good social amenities and so on.

The Nigerian universities purge out approximately 50,000 graduates annually which increases the cumulative number of unemployed youths. The spate of armed robbery is increasing, many scam methodologies and strategies are formed everyday by unscrupulous elements among the youths simply because an idle hand and mind are the devil’s workshop. All these social vices gain ways from the Nigerian political problems. We always wonder if Nigeria would ever change for the better or do we need God to descend from His throne to Nigeria for political and economic restructure?

Bad electricity supply has left many Nigerians starving because so many hands and mouths depend on electricity. The case of electricity problem in Nigeria has become like that of HIV which has no permanent cure but can only be managed…no matter how much is invested in the power sector it worsens each time we change government. This electricity problem has turned Nigeria to a dumping ground for generator manufacturers, importers get all these products into the countries unchecked in order to make more money. It has been our culture to see every problem as an opportunity to make money without considering the adverse effect of our act. No wonder people are now living a short life. We all know how bad it is for our body system to be filled with carbon monoxide from these bad generators imported especially from Asia, China to be specific.

Good employment is now meant for a particular class of people in this country…its now like a family’s cake. If you are not a member of the family, there wont be any cake for you. Godfatherism has characterized the Nigerian labour market. Why then do we have to blame those who are very desperate to leave this country for greener pastures when they know that the falling naira rate and exchange will better their chances of becoming more comfortable after series of odd jobs and hard labour abroad and eventually bringing in their hard earned hard currencies back to the country? The problems which arose out of the Nigerian political system or bad governance is a domino effect. One problem leading to another. Fuel price hike to increase in transport fares, food stuffs and other basic needs, where is Nigeria heading to?

Foreign embassies in Nigeria have all taken the advantage of the desperate nature of many Nigerians as an avenue to generate large income for their countries. Even when you have good intentions of going abroad and your documents are genuine and according to their requirements, the only thing you can get is “sorry, you are not qualified for the visa” after paying a non-refundable visa fee. Like a British  consular once stated, they receive about 20,000 visa applications weeklyand we know a how much this would fetch them weekly. United kingdom or other countries having embassies in Nigeria need not look for oil-wells as we have in Nigeria to make their economy boom. The most annoying thing about these embassies, especially UK embassy is that, they will tell you that your bank statement or other documents are forged yet they ask you to appeal against such decision which ought to have been an absolute refusal, eventually, your appeal may be allowed and they call you to come for your visa. Why the initial allegation of forgery? Nigerian problems have become opportunities for other countries to make their economy better which invariably means that these countries too do not want Nigeria to be better.

I have read many posts here on Nairaland where some people will say if anyone can afford to buy an air ticket and pay an agent a huge amount of money to get visa to go abroad, then such person is already a millionaire here in Nigeria if he can invest well. How many Nigerians have the knowledge of investing funds? Are the public well informed of the opportunities waiting to be tapped around them? The orientation people get from different situations determine their future. If there are Nigerians who are willing and are able to travel abroad, then it is good to support them…afterall, when they go out, irrespective of every legal job they engage themselves with, they will still bring the income back to invest in their father's land. We know there are bad sides of traveling abroad but the situation will always get better on returning to naija. Our destiny is in our hands, lets do Nigeria proud… there are great talents in Nigeria and Nigeria is richly blessed with human, material and natural resources which can make us the best in the world where America and Europe will be at our tail. Don't say no when you have the opportunity to go abroad.
