Help! Spammers Are Killing My Cafe.
« on: May 27, 2008, 06:13 AM »

I own and run a cybercafe and the greatest challenge I am facing in the business now  is  spam mails sent from my cafe by yahoo guys.
My ISP do not take it lightly and they have shut down my site severally as a warning and I loose much in cash and customers each time that happens. Can someone tell me how to stop these guys from sending spam mails from my machines.
I believe there might be a program that can restrict spam from being sent from my cafe. I have searched the net but what I normally get is spam blocker/filter which only blocks spam from being sent to you and not the other way round.

I need help.

This is surprising to me. there is a cyber cafe in my area that happily accepts yahoo boyz to continue this because that is how they can make profit and they don't seem to be troubled about it.  i will help you enquire how they do theirs. meanwhile try and install deep freez.

But if you stop yahoo boyz wont you run at loss? Grin LOL

restrict your cafe and you out of business, simple and clear because 80 of your customers will be yahoo boyz,  the best i will advise is to make inquiry from other cafe owner (because lot of the allow yahoo boys) how they did their.

deep freez can't stop them, only clean your system by deleting any program install after restart.

Your ISP shouldn't punish you for what others do! I wonder if they read all outgoing mails to know if its a spam or not! You can as well change your ISP.
For now, spam killers, filter, or blockers are all bullsh*t. There are only ways of making antiV software more interesting. As long as u can't stop one from sending mail, u can never stop SPAM!!! Your ISP would have to sit and control every outgoing mail to know if its a SPAM or not. And thts almost impossible.

So, u would have to reckon with such events (SPAM mails) when running an Internet-café.

Hello people,

Out of ignorance, some people and even some cafe owners believe that it is the yahoo guys that move cybercafes. With my experience, that is totally untrue.

These guys stay longer in cafes and that, any cafe owner will agree, does not necessarily mean more spending. The long hours they spend in cafes are cheaper. It is called bulk time and bulk times are very cheap.
When they stay all that long in your cafe with cheaper tickets you earn less and thats as simple as that. Regular users  walks in, buys regular ticket, do their deal and leave thereby  creating space for another user.

In my own experience, due to EFCC raids, many students (99% of my customers are students) feel more relaxed browsing in yahooze free cafe and that means higher patronage and believe me, it is working for me. Some cafe owners around may not agree but I have seen the two sides of it.

That is why I still need to take further step in discouraging yahoo activities at least in my own place. I don't think I need anyone to tell me that I'm foolish to stop scammers in my cafe because I know what works for me.
i don't know of other cafes but stopping them is very good for my business and thats just that.

thats why I am still looking for meaner ways of ending it. I need someone to suggest something workable.

@bigjoe
I feel you real good. As much as i hate this whole thing about Internet Scams being sent from Nigeria, but i really must confess it'll be a long fight to counter all measures these dudes use for their practices. Like they say, "nothing is impossible".

For now, i would only suggest going psychologically against them might help. e.g placing Notes that servers are being monitored and in events of suspected Scamming, perpretators would be handed over to the EFCC and prosecuted.

There is no Software that could detect a Scam mail. Only receivers of such mails that could report such events to the mail Carrier eg Yahoo, Hotmail, etc and the authorities for them to take action. Trillions of mails are being sent daily from different servers and its almost impossible for one or an ISP to control each outgoing mail. The so called Spam Blockers, Detectors, Killers works with information based on frequent occurence from a specific IP address or a soecific E-mail address. The Software has a database with millions of suspected Spam mailers, IP addresses and possibly where they operate from. Logically, you can tell how the rest works.

For now, Nigeria has no Bureau controlling its Servers so anyone could send anything from anywhere or into anywhere without being detected or controlled. Well, for me, i think the ISP should responsible for controlling its servers and not accusing their customers for what they aren't responsible for.

thanks K.martins,

I did exactly what you have suggested, I have a notice with an EFCC logo on each monitor in my cafe and it read: 'Your Browsing Session Here is Being Monitored' I didnt say who is doing the monitoring. But I know that most guys around recognises EFCC logo when they see it. I believe the notice worked to an extent because customers kept asking me who placed the notice. Thats probably because I did a very good graphic job with the sticker. It wasnt a normal cafe notice designed in ms word.

Also at the entrance and various conrners of my cafe is a sign that says 'email scam mail is a crime, BEWARE' That was placed on a clear background with a blingin handcuff. That, I think, is also doing some work.

As odd as it might sound, I have a policy of walking out anyone who uses email extractor out of my cafe. There are warnings for that one too.

All these steps are not normal cafe style of operation but I tell you its good for my business  because its building a reputation of yahooze free cafe and I can tell u that there are many people around who doesnt want to browse in a yahooze infested cafe, it makes the feel safer. I am targetting these people.

Thank u once again.
