Why Many Nigerians Can't Make Money Online!
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:53 AM »

Hi everyone,

I just want to say some little things out here on some of the problems that confront people involved in internet biz in Nigeria and why they really can't make money. It is very simple that most of the real online biz we have out there has set out guidelines on payment issues, and if we must be frank with ourselves as it stands right now the most widely used payment system in the world of e-currency is PAYPAL, and it's a pity that they don't support Nigerians. So we rather have employed means of getting through this payment system like;

1. Get a friend in the US to open a paypal account for you and attach it to his bank over there, while you make monies online you can periodically withdraw into his attached US Bank account and he then sends you Western Union, and this process takes say a minimum of about 2 weeks for the funds to leave paypal to his bank that is attached to that paypal account and he gets the money cashed and sends them over to you. What a process.

2. You can as well get a PAYPAL account yourself here in Nigeria by getting a US Bank account (normally these are US Brokerage accounts that work like bank accounts) once you are able to do this you can add a paypal account to this Bank accounts and they send a spend that would normally reflect in a couple of days on the brkerage account. I basically used my E*Trade Brokerage account for this before some SCAMMERS ot this information and spoiled things for the legit folks.

3. Getting someone in the US open a paypal account for you is a good option especially when he opens it with his personal details, this can help you so much in the sense that when you somehow make that mistake of accessing your account on a Nigerian IP address mistakenly, he can resolve the issue since he's over there he can just send the needed documents like prove of a US residence, SSN if he's a citizen and a call back number. But i don't know too many people out there who are opprtuned to have folks in the US who can do this for them.

4. That leaves us stranded most times, and frustrated doing online business. I wonder what kinnda online business we would be doing when you find it difficult doing business on ebay, getting paid on reliable sites just mention them ,  over 80% of these online opportunities rely on paypal as their backbone of payments.

5. What i rather see us do in Nigeria is information selling, that i think is wat we do amongs ourselves,  we see folks like Mr. Sunny Obazu On SD, and inforprenuer Army,  just name them most of the successfull internet gurus out there did not get there transacting biz with counterparts online rather they got some information and started making noise about it here in Nigeria and people paid to get to buy their EBooks or attnd some of their seminars.

6. We cannot amek strides this way as right now i just see alot of recycled information moving around,  what everyone needs to do is get a PAYPAL ACCOUNT TODAY and do real online business, thats the best way to start online. Check this blog out maybe you could find help.

Great Thanks Everyone.

This was  a great post.

Information marketing business is a goldmine any day, any time.

But there is one business which does not rely much on paypal and that is sports betting, you don't need to have paypal or us bank account, you can use your visa debit cards (they accepts the ones from nigeria as well, while you can withdraw your money through western union and it is 100% legal.

Good info.

I don't think the problem some nigerians have is paypal account. Many NIgerians are now opening paypal accounts.
I have personally been doing so for people for the past 4 years.

I think the reason people spend 5 years in the online wilderness with nothing to show is because, too many Nigerians are looking for free stuffs online.

Until they begin to understand that you use money to make money,  they will keep looking for freebies.
The most popular word online is FREE!. However, nothing is free.

I agree with you. He should only share the knowledge. That would be good enough. The problem is that many successful Nigerian net marketers want to sell every info. Some of these things should be given free. But to start off the business, A person must put in his money!

making payment on the internet is getting easier day by day expecially now that most of our banks are now helping out in that regard. You can get a Mastercard from GTBank with a litttle amount of money.I got mine with just $100 and $30 was deducted from that to open the account. And I learnt you can get also a visa card from zenith Bank.I believe personally that the Era of Problem with online payment is gradually coming to an end.You can also make payments thru graphcard.com which is free to join. For more valuable infos free mail me at: dejsmiles@gmail.com

firstly anything involving nigeria sends out red flags on the internet.
Try going to say ebay and see that no one wants to deal with nigeria  due to some people spoiling our name.
Even my bank has sent out a notice a year ago warning customers when buying on the internet to be wary of goods or services from nigeria.
so selling goods can be quite hard. You can sell information but remember nowadays there virtually no information you cannot get off the internet for free. So  you either have some information which is not on the internet(hard to think of any myself) or you have a free information service which is so popular that it gets many hits.
Companies trying to advertise pay billions to advertise on the net because they rather spend 2m $$ to put an ad on a website that gets 1m visits a day then a billboard for same 2m $$ in some city that has 500k population and most will drive pass it and never look up .

Hey everyone,

One explained about paypal account in this topic. There are lot of other ways you can make money on the internet. Rather use the internet to earn money. But you need a lot to learn. If you can do web designing, CSS, HTML, ASP, Java - there is lot for you! You can go to Elance.com, Freelancer.com, eBay.com (for real stuff, and services as well).

If you have an idea for website, then there is ADSENSE goldmine for you. One needs to be determined. Constant promotion is the key. Value-Addition to your website is another. Small things add up - Check Google Gadgets for the small things on your website! Your website could be any topic (not about yourself - adsense won't accept you for ads!) - Psychology, Anthropology, Business, Friendship, Learning, Mathematics, Foreign Exchange, Economics, Investments - You need constant value addition!

Somebody pointed out Nigeria is a scammers paradise, well every country has devised a method to outdo others to make money for their own country. Look at China - They are into product plagiarism (copying products), US/US/Europe - Foreign Exchange (well anybody tell me what is the rationale behind $ 1 = N100 or whatever it is), Middle-East (exploiting the world reserves of oil). So no body is saint. Only that Nigeria needs more education.

There are alternatives to PayPal though they may not be as famous among online consumers as PayPal. AlertPay is one of the best alternative to PayPal. It is run by a Canadian company and they accept Nigerians. You can read more about it in an article I wrote on my blog How To Receive Money Online
