1. If you are trying to open a document saved in the native Office 2007 format (*.docx, *.xlsx) in office 2003, then that wont be possible. You have to re-save the 2007 document using the "save as" option in the file menu and then select the option that has "97-2003 Document". That way, Office 2003 would open it up with no issues.
2. If you are trying to open a 2003 document in 2007 and you are having issues, then I feel the document is corrupt. Office 2007 is backward compatible with office versions from 97.
BTW, what message do you get when you try to open the documents?

That is where welcome startup that prompt opening dialog message asking you a selection you want for OpenOffice accepting format conversion: Corel Suite and MS Office. I have done that many times OpenOffice, Corel Suite, MS Work---accepting opening MS Office document (.doc, .xls, .ppt, .mdb) .doc - MS Word .xls - MS Excel .ppt - MS PowerPoint .mdb - MS Access Only my responsible to save as specifically above for later reference instead of OpenOffice document. ======== .pdf - Acrobat that is only work on Adobe Reader opening not on openoffice, Corel, MS Office/Work!!!

Download add-on plugins for MS Word to accept convert old file format (MS Word 97, MS Word 2000, and MS Work).
I did installed MS Work convert for my mother whose software MS Work (.wps) on her computer that will automatically save as (.doc ) transferring to other computer that has MS Office 2007. Save my mother's headache working on her manuscript projects to be saved daily basis.
My mother is computer illiterate but learning basically.

@ poster, pay more attention to Maleeq's post because he has pretty much answered your question. Bottom line is, you can open/save MS word file from 97 to 2003 in 2007 but not vice versa. And don't forget to post what error message you're getting in case the issue might be more than opening/saving file formats. Peace!

Just like Maleeq said, Office 2007 is backward compatible with lower versions of office so you do not need any special plugin or patch or configuration etc to make it work. If you are experiencing a problem in opening files from lower versions of Office in Office 2007, then your files are either curropted or your Office 2007 is not properly installed. You may try working alog these routes to find your solution: Resave your files properly in Office 2003 (if possible do it on another system in case your office 2003 has a bug). Then try opening them, as ussual, in Office 2007. If problem presist (A)bort, (P)onder, (R)einstall your office 2007 (using a more authentic version). You can also try visiting Microsoft's Help online (be carefull if your OS and other products are pirated - those guys could do nasty things to you).
