AN 80-year-old woman, Mrs. Grace Erondo, has been arrested by the police for allegedly trading in babies.
Erondo, who was paraded by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, was accused of human and child trafficking in Abia State with the victims as young pregnant women.
According to Okiro, the octogenarian was arrested on May 28 by detectives from the Anti-Human Trafficking section of Zone 9 of the Nigeria Police.
The detectives were said to have swooped on the suspect’s illegal hostel where she harboured women and arrested her.
It was gathered that 11 of the victims found in the hostel were pregnant while two others were suspected to have recently delivered their babies who were said to have been taken away by suspected adoptive parents or ritualists.
Okiro said, “Investigations further revealed that these victims are mostly students and on getting pregnant run away from their homes and schools without the knowledge of their parents and school authorities to live with the suspect until they deliver.
“This development has contributed to the increasing number of cases of missing persons being reported in the country.”
The victims arrested with Erondo were Chioma Chime, Jennifer Njoku, Uche Ijeoma, Ogechi Onwuha, Joy Akudo, Oluma Adindu and Chinwendu John.
Others were Mary Ibe, Joy Nnodim, Eucharia Uka, Happiness Amaechi, Angela Madu and Mercy Johnson.
The ages of the victims ranged between 18 and 25. One of them, Mary, who spoke to newsmen, said she went to the centre to deliver and she later learnt that three girls that delivered shortly after she got there had their babies taken away from them.
She said she ought not to have gone there but because the boy who impregnated her asked her to abort the pregnancy, adding that she was given N30, 000 to get rid of the pregnancy, but she decided to keep it.
Okiro advised parents and guardians to always monitor their children and wards “to prevent this detestable trade in human beings which is prevalent in Abia State and its environs”
