The Nigerian Super Eagles struggled and puffed to the dying minutes before getting the winning goal by Joseph Yobo aginst Sierra Leone in a Group 4 encounter. Also in Group 4, S. Africa restored some pride as they trashed visiting E. Guinea 4-1 for their first win.

In Group 8 Morocco ran wild for a 4-1 bashing of Mauritania.

Group 1 Cape Verde got one over visitors Tanzania 1-0 thanks to substitute Babanco in the 73 minute."
