Acrophobia is a Greek word which is being interpreted as: morbid fear of great heights
You don't really need to get yourself drunk or drugged, or to take some special medication for phobia before embarking in an aeroplane, all you need is the basic understanding of the avian phenomenon.
If you are someone who entertains some elements of fear when it comes to travelling by aeroplane, it's important for you to know that your fear is considerably meaningless as the reasons are illusion rather than logical. Bear in mind that air travel is the safest means of transportation in the world, and some of the factors that made it this safe are the unvarying and habitual method of procedure that the aviation industries take to ensure it safety.
Aeroplanes are programmed and designed for safety in every sense, there are control towers with special radars and monitors that locate and maintain correspondence with every plane: and all airplanes within same air space hear same signals or messages hence the ATC (or Air Traffic Control) often specify the name of a plane to whom a particular message is intended. Yet, in the event of emergency, any airplane is allowed to use the nearest airport in landing
Except in some certain situation where pilots have to use their own initiative, no pilot has the right to fly a plane according to his own preference, this means, before a plane leaves the ground, everything about each particular flight has been programmed and documented, and the pilots takes some time to go through the documents even while in the cockpit: the documents instructs the pilots of the weather conditions, the route to take, the altitude they should fly, the speed, the air traffic condition etc.
During a flight, the only times the pilots need to take total control of their planes are when the planes are taking off and when they are landing; but as the planes reach their cruising altitudes, the rest of the job is left to the auto pilots: this means, the planes then fly as programmed even though the pilots are available. But the pilots would need to take control or at least be at alert in the event of a storm such as turbulences which they are more than capable to handle. A commercial plane auto pilot is usually programmed not to fly at a speed exceeding 950km/h, (a human pilot would needed to exceed such speed). Every now and the pilots receive updates of their situation through transponders (Transmitter-responder) as the information are available and all these measures work together for safety.
It's remarkable to note that airplanes usually fly and relaxes at a height between thirty thousand to thirty eight thousand feet. flying above clouds where the air is thin and lacks oxygen; hence the cabin is pressurised with compressed oxygen, yet, most air crash in history took place either during take-off or during landing where the pilots have little or no time to manoeuvre their aircrafts and the ATC would have no time to give safety instructions due to low heights. This means that the great height that you fear is indeed safer that the lower height that brings you a sigh of relief.
Mind you, most air crash in history were caused by human errors, some were caused by storms, and few were caused by metal fatigue, But each and every air crash is being investigated, and the aviation industries leant bitter lessons and then rectify the errors to ensure that such a thing responsible for the air crash never happens again.
Some people are not afraid of heights, but yet, they fear to fly by aeroplane; it's one thing if you're afraid of heights, but another thing if you're afraid of airplanes because, while it's understandable to fear height, it's meaningless for one to fear airoplane. Therefore, if you're afraid to fly i recommend that you take a statistic of the hundreds of thousand air transportations that take place each day; then consider the amount of lives that are lost each day by road accident, then compare the safety of airplane with that of land vehicles and tell us your findings. Sure you'D realise that it's easier to win a multi-million dollar lotto than to die in a plane crash. Aeroplanes are very expensive, so they are well equipped to facilitate safety: There are indeed hundreds of thousands of flights each day, so why do you fear that yours would crash where as crashes are not common? And besides, not all crashes that result in death, so, i encourage you to overcome your meaningless phobia and enjoy some blissful air travel; IT IS THE SAFEST OF ALL!
