In our previous discussion on feminism, we didn't bother to define it. Here's a humorous conversation that illustrates the confusing surrounding the term 'feminism': COMMON GUY/GAL: Well, I do think women are people.
FEMINISTA: Then you’re a feminist.
CG: OK. Cool.
FEMINISTA: …which means you’re also in favor of employment laws that specially protect female workers and divorce laws that seem to favor women, restricting rights for men, such as free speech (specifically, the right to produce and consume pornography)…
CG: Ok, ok I suppose, er-wait what was that about the porn?
FEMINISTA: …and that the results of the sexual revolution were beneficial only to men, marriage is an institution that oppresses women and men, that monogamy was originally conceived of as a way for men to control women…
CG: Whoa, wait a minute-
FEMINISTA: …that human society would be better off with dramatically fewer men, that there are no essential differences between the sexes, and that the roles observed in society are due to conditioning, of course views that separate the sexes rather than unite them are considered to be sexist rather than feminist…
CG: What the fvck?
FEMINISTA: …and that science reflects a masculine perspective and in light of that we need to examine science’s claims to objectivity. [gasps for air]
CG: That’s some pretty fvcked up stuff there. I don’t believe most of that.
FEMINISTA: O RLY? So you’re saying you’re in favor of the Rapemongering Phallocracy, eh? Oppressor!

Good question Seun, i teach sociology and always start the gender issue with the question 'are you a feminist?' to which usually half the girls say yes and almost all the boys say no. I then give them this description of what it is to be a feminist; 1. The belief that women and men are, and have been, treated differently by our society, and that women have frequently and systematically been unable to participate fully in all social arenas and institutions. 2. A desire to change that situation. 3. That this gives a "new" point-of-view on society, when eliminating old assumptions about why things are the way they are, and looking at it from the perspective that women are not inferior and men are not "the norm." I then ask them again and most (male and female) now declare themselves feminism, as a perspective feminism (true feminism) does no preach that women are better or more equal than men. all feminism is , is the belief that men and women are as important as each other. that is the simplest way to understand it. anyone that thinks it is a more militant thing simply misunderstands, and Dr J will be more than willing to give them a lesson.  So Seun are you a feminist? |

I am a feminist.
To me a feminist is a PERSON (male or female) who believe that women are equal to men and should be treated as such. A feminist believe that women should have; the right to work, the right to vote, the right to receive equal pay as men.
All feminists believe in these above things.
However some feminists don't believe in women having reproductive rights due to religious constraints ie the choice of abortion.

I'd say the definition of feminism varies depending on who's defining it. But the most important one is that no one sex or group of people is more important than the other. Another is that no systematic oppression of a group of people--as is the case for many women in different parts of the world--should be encouraged or practiced.

Its not about proving who can do what better or getting insolent and intolerant.
Women have fought for many rights in the past . Not with a loose mouth but with brains.
