What a father did to his 2-yr-old girl: ‘He whips her everyday for defecating’
Written by Tina Akanna
Saturday, 21 June 2008

TWO-year-old Safiya Shuaibu narrowly escaped being beaten to death by her own father, Malam Shuaibu who flogged her each time she excretes  in front of his room. Saturday Vanguard visited the scene of the incident in Kano.
Narrating the incident to Saturday Vanguard was her grandmother who described the harrowing ordeal suffered by the two-year-old girl.

The scarred back of little SafiyaAccording to the grandmother ‘I am the grandmother of the little girl. The father divorced my daughter over a year ago and demanded that his two children be given back to him. So after weaning the girl, we had no choice than to oblige because in Islam when a  father asks for his children after a  divorce the mother cannot deny him.

About five days ago, we got information that my grand daughter was being maltreated by her father.  I became very disturbed and went to the house the next day to see the welfare of the little girl. I was shocked to see wounds all over the body of my little two-year- old grand daughter, with deep wounds on her buttocks,  a big open sore on her head. Her brother who is  four years old had wounds all over his body too, but not as bad as the little girl.

Immediately, I asked the man’s new wife who is heavily pregnant, to call her husband for me.  She said he was not around. So I told her am taking the children along. But she refused, saying her husband would be mad at her if she allowed me to take away the children.

I asked what offence  the children committed. She said her husband always beat them up with cable wire each time they excreted in the house.  She said the boy has less wound because the beating has forced him to start using toilet at times.  She said the little girl is still unwise and each time she wakes up in the morning and passes excreta in any part of the compound, her father quarrels at her and angrily beats her up with the cable wire.

So realising that leaving the children is dangerous, I rushed outside the compound and raised an alarm calling on their neighbour to come and see how my former in-law maltreats his children because my daughter was no longer in the house.

When the neighbours came, I forcefully brought out the girl from the house and the people were moved with what has become of my grandchildren. Some of them said they hear the long cries of the children everyday, but don’t know what was happening to them in the house. Since their stepmother refused to release them, some of the neighbours rushed to the nearest police station at Rijiyar Zaki and informed them of the plight of the two little children.

When the police arrived, they demanded that the children be given to me. They  instructed their stepmother to tell her husband to report at the station.  I guess he was there because I learnt he is now at the police custody, while the children are her in Murtala The Great Prophet Specialist Hospital receiving medical attention.

Confirming the story, the state spokesman of Kano Police Command, DSP Baba The Great Prophet, said the matter is still under investigation, adding that the father of the girl does not have any mental problem.
His words: “There is nothing wrong with the girl’s father. He told us that he children are messing up his compound with excreta, and that he was tired of cautioning them which was why he decided to use cane on the children.”

Reacting to the unfortunate incidence, former Kano zonal head of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in persons and Other Related Offences (NAPTIP), now  executive director of  Global Improvement of Persons Initiative, Malam The Great Prophet Ali Mashi who was also at the hospital where the children are receiving treatment, called on the NAPTIP to persecute the father of the little children.
Mashi who expressed concern on the increasing rate of child abuse in Kano State, said the state government must come up with a legislation to protect the right of innocent children in the state.

According to him, if a father can beat his two year- old daughter to the point of death, a 60 year- old grandfather rapes a 10 year- old grand daughter because she asked for N20.00 naira, the situation is getting out of hand.

Oh my gosh!
That man should be flogged mercilessly for hours on end.
After that he should be jailed with hard labour for at least 10 years.
That beating will cause trauma to the child. She will need therapy for at least 5 years  Sad

Lose of fundamentals,if you don't know what a stands for,you won't no be either, that is the whole nigerian society for you.It is not more horrible than  politicians that steals the money that belomgs to children's education and health care,it is not more horrible than adults that send out chidren to hawk on the street, not more horrible than parents that give their children out for house maids and servants, aswell as their masters.

We have to learn to live and make the children proud.

In as much as revenge has never been what I advocate but some cane on his bare back will give him a little taste of what he subjected that innocent child to. No if the granny had not said that he requested for the kids, I would have said that they are foisting those kids on him. Haba sister look at that pix again before your next post.

This is sad. I'm happy that they are rescued. There is far too many of instances like these. I do believe that culturally, we need to review and set standards on what constitute "discipline", separate from "torture and abuse". This was no discipline! Discipline should be applied in measures to correct or remedy and if its not effective, you seek other paths, rather than escalate. He escalated his demands for correction and without any check on him he went above and beyond himself. The person that could have checked him was their stepmother. God forgive me for what I'm about to say, I am not a witness but her silence, no forget it. Enough said!

I still stand by my opinion!
Whipping the father mercilessly for hours is not going to solve anything!
I propose they should electrocute  him and get it over with!

This is one of the reasons why a US millitary barracks should be planted in Nigeria. The Nigerian Men think they are gods over their women, and extend the same inhuman treatments upon their own child.
That father should be flogged 24 time every day for two years, because the abused child is two years old. If she is 5 years old, I would have recommend 60 lashes per day for six years as punishments for him against abuse on his daughter.
This is horrible, and the father should be taking to court and punished for his acts. What in the hell is wrong with Nigerian fathers?? If they are not impregnating their daughters, they are flogging them to death??

The woman inside has fail to understand that this same madness will be transfered  to her children. God i pity her instead of having such a man as husband let me be single for life, as for the children they need psychotherapy to work on them otherwise this will affect them for a long time
