What Is Wrong With Firefox?
« on: June 22, 2008, 01:12 AM »

Hi good people,
Please, am still battling this little site of mine. Ok, i thought I was getting everything ok until I previewed it in both IE7 and firefox.
I have a flash slide in the prize_box but the flash buttons I generated from DW and then, the leftnav div overflows in firefox, knocking off the orange_box for my content instead of flowing right under the prize_box div. I can't seems to find where am getting it wrong especially when it displays ok in IE Huh so I thought there are better hands here that can help me out. Please have the patience to go through the codes. Am still some dang greenhorn in the site business Smiley.

Here's my code below:

@poster
1) I hope you are aware that because we have no access to source.css, button1.swf, etc that there is no way we can see your images/movies without you including access to the server you are on.

2) You need to use indenting more.  This would help narrow down your errors much quicker.  It took me 5 minutes just to get that straight.

3) FF follows web standards better than IE so FF's behaviour is what should have actually happened in both browsers if IE followed web standards more closely.

4) In the future, to reduce your dependence on DIVs or "cure yourself of divitis" as XHMTL purists call it, consider using "<br class="clear" /> as opposed to "<div class="clear"></div>".  They do the same thing, just fewer key strokes and you save a byte or 2.

5) Solution:
Cut the "<div class="clear"></div>" line from where it is now and paste it right before the closing DIV tag (the one for "main_container").  That should fix it.  If not, hit us up again.

Thanks,

Since you did not provide a link for us to view and tell you what the problem is.

Here is helpful tips at below link. I do not know what kind of version you use Flash to build prize_box.

100% height and 100% width XHTML Flash-embed website

Thanks uspry1. I used SWISHmax to develop the flash for prize_box.

@yawa-ti-de,
I had wanted to upload the source file but am restricted even when I zipped it. I wonder how else I can pass it across. if you don't mind, can I send it through your email addy?
Let me know if there alternative way I can send the file.
Thanks so much for ur time.

in my untrained eye, the problem seem to be with the flash buttons in the leftnav div which I genereted with DW. In FF the buttons looks like they added some margins into the element which causes it to overflow a bit but IE render it well. What I really want to achieve is have the prize_box and leftnav end the same height.

again, knowledge shared to me is the greatest investment to mankind. I am so greatful.

@edet
I think you would still have issues with the DIV tag with the class break.  Did you try to do what I mentioned above as well?

@yawa-ti-de
You are right, I tried it and there wasn't any difference between the <br class> and the div. I've gone through the code well but I don't seem to see where the error is. But, I tried giving a line-height rule to the <p> in between the flash buttons. It got the leftnav same height with the prize box in FF but then, become too short in IE. Am still trying an alternative way to display the source file and images. I'll try sending them to you through your email addy if you don't mind.
thanks a mill.

I think you should provide 2 screenshots - 1 for IE and 1 for FF.  Alternatively, upload the files to your server or to a free server like geocities and provide the link here.

Thanks,

Ok, Here's a screenshot of the site in FF and IE.
You can see the problem is from the buttons in FF. But I am hoping it's a very simple error o my side.

What version of IE are you using because I just checked in FF2 and IE8 and the page is messed up only in FF2.  As I said in my 2nd or so post, you need to delete the DIV with class clear line and paste it where I told you to paste it.

By the way, if u hv done so and r still encountering the problems, then might I suggest that you dump the flash buttons for regular css or image buttons?  If you are using flash so as to achieve some kind of catchy animation, CSS and images can b made to do same via CSS commands and javascript rollovers respectively.

Just as yawa has rightly pointed out, css command and javascripts can do just what is similar to the effect your flash would do for you. Instead of being put to a stop by one or two coding or design errors which have substitutes to getting done, use their alternatives. Guess what, "Don't Believe You Are Stoppable" so start using your alternatives later you can find the solution to this little task.

@OmniPotens,
Today, very sad and depressed, I was determined to abandone the site design but then I just read your post and the reality of Adidas advert came to me - "impossible is nothing", and I was like sure thing, I can do this just that I haven't gotten something right.

Am so touched by kind-hearted people like you and yawa(I really wish I'D get to know her more).
Anyways, like I said, I just graduated from the kindergarten of HTML to CSS and trying my hand in JS will be more of a suicidal mission Grin so I was ready to stick with my level, for now.

I just want to say that, I kept tweaking the css and somehow, the error disappeared (or not glaring now) Smiley Am ready to move on to the next level and after this am going into JS.

I want to thank y'all once again and when the site goes live, you guys are going to be aknowledged as the forces that helped kept me going. I am grateful and I thank God for everything.
PEACE!
NB:I am still going to bring my little headache when I get stuck Wink
