I beg to disagree, and if anyone was Jealous, definitely not Kanu Nwankwo!
He's a complete cool-headed and humble guy and that's why I respect him. The truth still remains that our dear Governor wasted our money (atleast, we pay tax!  ;))by inviting Rio into the Country, He could have used the money on better options. Moreso, since the ManU team are coming in to Nigeria in July, I think he could have just waited a bit, maybe to have the full house launch his street soccer project.

These reasons aren't good enough if you'd ask me, because Rio won't be the first nor the last International footballer to come to our Nation! There are lots of other International stars (Musicians, Diplomats etc) that come in and out of the Country unharmed!

Come to think of it. . . .have we received the MDC Award yet?? (Most Dangerous Country)!  ;D

Kanu is cool-headed but simply jealous. He is also an ingrate because he'd forgotten so quickly that he grew up from the street. He was picked from the gutter just like millions of Nigerian youths out there who are struggling to showcase their talent to the world.
If Kanu is interested in helping ailing kids instead of developing grassroot football where his competence lies, that is his problem.
You also need to know that Kanu always solicit for funds from soccer stars abroad and philanthropists here, so faulting Rio's visit to EMPOWER Nigerian youths is a very wrong stance.

Quote from: khufu on June 26, 2008, 10:45 AM
had it been kanu was the one honoured as Rio he wouldn't have complained. y did he not complain when tax payers monies was used to treat him of his heart ailment years ago? he is just been paranoid. i don't blame him though, there is a wide gulf between education and illiteracy.
That's the point! Leave it or take it!!!

@Topic
This matter is very easy to understand, let's just reason from both sides

We all know what effect a football academy has on a country, only one academy produced Eboue and the Toure brothers

Kanu: What has he come to do?
To examine possibilities of him starting up a football academy in Nigeria . . . and inspire the youths
This is the same thing Viera did with the Diambars football academy in Senegal

Kanu's View: Why Ferdinand?
Ferdinand is one of the biggest names in world football and a true example of the rags to riches story
Growing up in in the notorious Peckham where some of the guys he grew up with are either in jail or dead.
Bringing Ferdinand opens the academy to the biggest sponsors around. Today, Cadbury and Adidas are major sponsors for Viera's Academy
between Ferdinand currently funds a football academy in Uganda.

Kanu: Why did the government have to pay?
It shows the fact that the Lagos State is involved in taking the youths off the streets
As tkb said, it's just the least they could have done to for the long term benefits

Kanu: Why not any of the Super Eagles players?
Ferdinand brings the global attention to it, and is that not how to get sponsors?

Kanu apart, how can you use taxpayers money to do such a thing? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?  If Rio wanted something good for Africa, he should've come to Lagos with his own money and not milking a dying cow the more with his stardom. I think these guys get some cash back from these ludicrous deals and that's why they keep doing it. Donald Duke tried that same bullshit when he was Cross Rivers gov by spending a fortune on American celebrities like Joe and R Kelly.

Lagos state born NFL player, Isaac Idonije did the same with Amobi Okoye and Osi Umeynoira last year.

Super Eagles skipper, Kanu Nwankwo will not stop giving.

Nwankwo’s generous spirit took another dimension on Sunday, when he led his colleagues in the Eagles to cheer the Flamingoes in their Under-17 World Cup qualifier against Cameroun.

The skipper had promised that the Eagles would be at the stadium to cheer the girls, as he believed that the female teams had been neglected.

In their presence, the Flamingoes hammered Cameroun 3-0 to book their ticket to the Under-17 World Cup in New Zealand.

The Flamingoes have chalked up two wins and a draw in the qualifiers, after beating Ghana and Cameroun in Abuja and recording a 1-1 draw with the Camerounians in Yaounde. Nwankwo not only made good his promise to be at the stadium but also presented $10,000 to the Flamingoes and their immediate seniors, the Falconets.

Presenting the money, Kanu said $7,000 was for the Under-20 girls while the balance was for the Flamingoes.

He said the initiative was to encourage female soccer, which had been neglected for several years.

“This financial motivation I believe would encourage our female players and spur them into winning international trophies for the country,” he said.

He expressed regret at the neglect of female football in the country, saying playing soccer was difficult and required motivation of players.

“The way you treat players matters a lot , it is not just camping them, but to understand that they all have to take care of themselves and their responsibilities,’’ Kanu said.

NFA Chairman, Sani Lulu, commended the Eagles for the donation, which he noted “was first of its kind in the country.

“Eagles have set the pace and now we can start recognising the efforts of the female teams, the initiative was a foundation for all to unite and support sports development ,” he said.

Lulu said the Eagles’ initiative, was to show Nigerians, the need to support women football.

He said the NFA would support the female national teams by ensuring that they were accorded equal treatment with their male counterparts.

“Whatever we do for the male teams we will do for you, the female teams,” he added.

The NFA Secretary-General Bolaji Ojo-Oba, pledged a donation of N500,000 to support the initiative.

Mike Itamuagbo, NFA Marketing Consultant, also pledged a donation of N1.5million to the teams.

We're talking bout the one of the most important defenders in England and you're calling Kanu that's still begging for a contract!!!
Ferdinand is a regular in a UCL winning team and a contestant for England's captain role.

Who are we kidding? Ferdinand will attract more sponsors than the whole Super Eagles put together
I don't just understand why we have to make a mountain ot of a molehill
Remember he's not only going to advertise it, he'll be a major sponsor

Why are Nigerians this myopic?

How can u compare Rio Ferdinand's fame to Kanu Nwankwo?
Who is Kanu?
Please. . . . . . . . .never ever compare any African player as far as fame is concerned to any English player.
The way the English media package their players is top draw. . . . . .
Rio will attract more mouth-watering endorsements more than all the super eagles team put together.

Kit and Jac have not yet told us how this stuff will benefit the children.

Remember, the street Football is for Lagosians, By Lagosians and in Lagos, so it would have been right for Lagos Govt to supliment Rio's Visit with other Eagles stars.

I don't have to read people's gibberish to form an opinion of ma own.
You must never equate Kanu's fame to Rio Ferdinand's . . . . It's a big syntax error.

Kanu is just jealous an Englishman has come to Lagos to steal his shine.
Do i blame Fashola? Nope!!!  We are talking of the player that lifted the Champions League trophy with Giggsy in May.
That alone would attract major sponsors who would want to sow into the street soccer projects.

Kanu should go and suck a straw and look for ways to bring other projects to Nigeria.

Jackal, some of the comments made by those who are not in support of this are:

  • Kanu is uneducated, that's why he's saying this.
  • Lagos needs to boost her tourism, that's why Rio was invited.
  • Kanu is simply Jealous.
  • BRF is allowed under the 2008 budget (as defined by Dr. Kitaun) to spend some money on who he wants to spend it on.
  • All the players in the Super Eagles  put together won't attract the kind of sponsorships Rio will attract.
  • Rio is more popular than kanu
  • Nigerians are so crazy about the Premiership; Rio is a UCL winner and more fans will come
