As for aiming for younger players, Nintendo isnt just aiming for them. they are aiming for female gamers, non-gamers, lapsed gamers. And one thing u may forget- a lot of lapsed gamers were hardcore just 5 years ago, but work and family took over.
sony leapfrogged nintendo when ninty failed to realise that we, the nintendo generation, had grown up and were now tweens and young adults. Now nintendo may take back the crown if sony doesnt realise that we are all getting jobs and families.
the new generation of hardcore gamers are a fickle bunch, I think. They don't have the patience and dedication that we had. thats one theory i have as to why fighting games are falling in popularity- they don't want to learn a game, they just want to mash buttons. If sony is betting on them, they may find they are eating leftovers from nintendo's kiddy N64 customers, who do not respect the games they play.

if u want to cast blames for the inertia of current lame game players look no other place than the growth of the net and the attendant possibilities of easily getting walkthroughs and cheats. and the ps3 is aimed at adults and those who grew with nintendo, those same gamers who chose the snes over genesis/megadrive simply because it was superior graphically, aurally, and more powerful. wii is and will forever be an all-bets gimmick, a curiosity and at worst a toy. indeed it has no clear-cut target audience. i for my part have outgrown mario, donkey kong and all the primate gang, pikachu, and such kiddie tripe.

As for me, I don't really think playing mario games makes me a childish or retarded person. It just means I don't take my games too seriously, at least not as seriously as I took them like 5 years ago when i kept trying to prove to people that games arent for kids. Nowadays I can't care less what the next guy thinks. Games are TOO popular, the masses are diluting them, so If they want to go away thinking the games are childish, I'll gladly hold the door open!
Nowadays I want games that will relax or excite me, and otherwise make me happy. Wiping out the alien scum in Prey makes me happy. (YEAH!!!) blowing the heads of worthless unworthy competitors in quake3 deathmatch makes me happy (SUCK IT DOWN!!!!). And wiping out previous level completion times on the fast doomship on mario3 (via psp) makes me happy, too!
By the way, sony has already filed a patent for a wii-ripoff, using eyetoy technology and a 'wand' like device. So soon your precious ps3 may become a gimmick too, mmm?

well seriously sha, we may play less games now what wit all these pressures (work, inlaws, tying shoelaces) but really if i have a spare moment to lose myself i'll rather let her rip at a fullblown console, not a fledgling. but i do agree that all that ps3 power is a bit of an overkill, but methinks its all about marketing ps3 AND blueray, because if it works and we buy into HD the blueray way then its massive revenue for sony and not just SCE. but still-MORE POWER MORE POWER and a flaming death to nintendo just the same!

When casual Nintendo makes more money that Sony Corp combined divisions, it kind of puts things in perspective.
Somehow I think dividing gamers into hardcore and casual is pointless. I think it works more as a financial categorization more than anything. Most peopls own or have access to more than one console anyway.
Funny how the "mature" games on Nintendo consoles send MS and Sony to the sack. Eternal Darkness & Resident Evil 4 anyone?

not necessarily. its the line of divide between the two groups that usually shapes the strategy of console makers. hardcore gamers debate what they want in future gens, as well as the failures of current ones and on this basis a lot of important factors are decided upon by the devs. for instance sony decided to embed ps2 emulation into the 3 because hardcore gamers are known for sticking with their software collections even fanatically, and really very few casual gamers bother with all this emulation stuff. casual gamers most likely'd snap up the cheaper box, while the highly opinionated hardcores can make or break a console. all the heat the ps3 is gettin is from the hardcore base for whom specs and tech aint all greek. as for supposedly "nintendo mature games", well RE made its debut on pc. |

Neoteny. Facts straight, man: Res4 was a gamecube exclusive, and was far superior visually to the ps2 version (mr graphics fan!  ) . Gameplay-wise they were identical. Secondly, Backwards compatibility is not for the benefit of the hardcore. The hardcore will buy 3 versions of the console just to play multiple regions in a case where a modchip does not exist (eg gamecube) so theres no need to strap a new console with kludges to play prehistoric games when your customer probably has 10 ps2's already anyway. Backwards compatibility is for the casual gamer who will ask 'uuuuh, duuuuh, its playstation abi? so I can play my toshinden on it abi?' Finally if you say casual gamers will go for the cheaper machine think again. Casual users of ANY technology are the PRIMARY MARKET for the overpriced 'something shiny!' models. Hardcore geeks are the BANE of consumer electronics vendors because they agonize over little details and absolutely do not want to pay more than is neccesary, eccept when it is neccesary (eg getting a console at launch) |

xbox360 for 300? core version then, and that is lame. figure on adding bits and pieces for an extra pad, HD or memory unit for the core xbox360, games and other knickknacks that don't come wit the core bundles. so i say spring of 2011 is a good projection.

i said RE, meaning the original RESIDENT EVIL!! gosh, everyone knows that RE$ was once GC exclusive and the GC version of RE4 has better screen shizzle so don't make it sound like im a lamer/noob.
from my experience with my very hardcore buddies (a sizeable bunch they are) i know the HC gamers retain their games catalogs longer than any casual gamers. and indeed the ps3 IS aimed primarily at HCGs because sony is banking on them appreciating all the power of the console. most casual gamers are going for the wii because its cheaper and less intimidating because at the end of the day CGs are going to buy a console just to play games and have fun rgardless of all the extra (and sometimes seemingly overdone) horsepower. heck, how many CGs care about the separation of GPU from core processing? how many care about multitasking and multiprocessing? take car enthisiats: they gush forth about double wishbone suspension and superturbocharged digital fuel injection torque RPMs aerodynamic streamlinin composite materials aluminum cam and all the motoring spiel, while the average motorist just want to drive comfortably or zoom off witout worrying about how many times the plugs fire. so if SCe decided to cram all that power under the hood and name a steep price, they know who they are targeting. i know people who'll definitely camp out 48 hours or more in front of compusa or bestbuy or wherever clutchin $1000000000000 dollars at launch day. these are hardcore.
