Any True Pre-mourinho Chelsea Fan In Nigeria?
« on: June 30, 2008, 01:30 PM »

About seven years ago I had a friend who was a staunch Chelsea supporter. I used to wonder why Chelsea,of all teams? Then it was either Manchester United or Arsenal,or maybe Okocha's Bolton that Nigerians wanted to hear about then. Chelsea was just a little-above-average team then, competing for 4th place with Newcastle, before Newcastle also met their own. That was Pre-Abrahamovich,Pre-Mourinho.

Then came the Russian billionaire and the dramatic Portugese, and overnight,Chelsea became a club to reckon with in the EPL. The period coincided with the period EPL became ultra-popular in Nigeria, and before you said CHE, ,a lot of Nigerians had joined the train.

Today, this friend of mine is the only Pre-Mourinho Chelsea fan I know, and these are people I know really watch football.

I'm sorry to say,95% of Chelsea fans in Nigeria started watching/following EPL in the last 4 years. Most Chelsea fans don't know ball.

For religious reason I'm not a die-hard fan of any foreign club but in all humility,I must say I have been watching football for quite long and I also read a lot about football. I always have sympathy for Arsenal/Barca though, but don't like to address myself as fan of these clubs. I watch football for fun,not as a crazy fan of any club.

I think Liverpool fans are the true football fans in Nigeria. Here is a simple, modest club that doesn't have any Nigerian interest unlike Mikel's Chelsea and Kanu's Arsenal. For anybody to say he's a Nigerian supporter of Liverpool,he should be a real person of football like Qasim Elegbede etc

Following Liverpool is Manchester United, much as I hate this club. This club enjoys wide support in Nigeria, yet no Nigerian has ever played there. Moreso my interactions with people have shown that Manchester United fans are always very informed in football(Chelsea fans the worst in football knowledge---imagine a Chelsea fan telling me Zola and Mutu played together in Chelsea, apology to the few ones that know football among them). I had difficulty choosing who the real football fans are between Manchester United and Liverpool but I found out that Manchester United's treble in 1999 attracted many Nigerians to them, I gave it to Liverpool fans

Arsenal? Hmmmmmm,  Kanu popularized this club in Nigeria. But even after Kanu's exit its till enjoys great support in Nigeria. Arsenal fans are also people of football knowledge and I recognise that just about half of Arsenal's support in Nigeria is accounted for by Kanu factor. Good football plus Igwe factor make up for the rest.

By the way, where are the once many Bolton fans in Nigeria? Oh sorry, they've gone with JJ, and most now Chelsea fans.
