Should O'level Result Matter Much In Our Career After First Degree?
« on: July 02, 2008, 12:26 PM »

Fellow Nairalanders, am forced to put this question to us all after an incident that was suffered by a bosom friend. He studied computer science in one of the polytechnics in the country (A credit in English, O'Level wasn't a criteria for admission for the course in the polytechnic).

He attended Oceanic Bank aptitude test and passed. Attended their interview and passed as well. It was in the process of medical letter collection that he was told there is no way he can work with Oceanic Bank International despite his good polytechnic national diploma certificate and over two (2) years of IT working experience without a credit in English, O'Level!

Well, the panel that interviewed him screened his credentials and were satisfied with it only to be turned down by another staff in charge of issuing the medical letter.

Fellow nairalanders, what are your take on this?

Ur friend should take his case to Oceanic HR dept, if they have screened and accepted him, l don't see why a medical staff should turn him down!

However, let him sit for GCE and make up for the deficency to avoid another future embrassment.

It's not suppose to be asked for, but in Nigeria it is always asked for. For the guy to be on the safer side let him just register and sit for GCE again and make a Credit in English if that is what they want. Actually a lot of people got waivers in either maths or english while going into the university or polytechnic those days (a Pass in English for sciences/technology & engineering courses while a Pass in Mathematics for Arts/humanities & social sciences was acceptable then), i don't know of now; things might have changed now.
