Not everybody is the same. Some people have a serious longing to return home and serve their motherland, not necessarily for the financial benefits, although that would be a good incentive. If everybody left and no one returned, what would happen to the posterity of the nation. I encourage you "machu" and in-join all others to provide him with useful information. Our schools and hospitals are crying out with inadequacies. Don't you think something should be done about that?

doc, stay put where u are.there is no job satisfaction here.u will be gambling with diagnosis because there is nothing to work with.I am bored stiff because i keep on assuring patients when i know in my heart of hearts that there is nothing i can do to help them and that there would have gotten better treatment outside the country.Last year i had to travel to India for an open heart surgery because there is no such centre in Nigeria. On getting there,i realized that this is a routine procedure there as if one is treating malaria.work and learn where you are,you be a happier person outside Nigeria

Thank you my sister.
Im a nija trained doctor and i can conveninetly tell the difference between nija practice and practicing in the west.
Its not for lack of skill, nija doctors blast american board exams regularly, its just the working environment, the pay is so bad and worse still the enivironment in nija is such that once people hear you're a doctor, they expect you to be rich, bro, its just good to stay where you are and get skills ,someday we all hope to work in nigeria again and you know the craze for foreign qualifications in nija, you need it!

i guess you have to tell us which foreign country you are in b4 asking us to help you. is it congo? or mali? or indonesia? or wherever? tell us

b/c this is not about patriotism or homesickness, you must be deranged to ever think of coming to nigeria to practice after a foreign medical education(if it is in a western country) b/c the attitude you develop in those countries is so different from what you'll see in naija. so different that you'll go mad. i mean real mad. . . .craze man for street.

you want to come home to sign death certificates over preventible and extremely treatable diseases?

haba.

abeg tell us which country you finish from. let us start from there.

people who talk about brain drain are being economical with the truth. what has naija done with the 'brains' that are there today?

as i'm talking to you i know of doctors in nigeria who are looking for a job. yes, right there in nigeria, now. many of our brains are there now doing nothing. wasting. de-skilling, nobody cares. when they manage to get abroad and find something, people scream brain drain.

i know doctors in the US who left naija b/c they could not get a job, not because they wanted better pay, or better working conditions.

A lot of people did it back back in the 70s and 80s and still liked it. But not now - you will me miserable.

Imagine being torn between saving a poor life and getting paid to pay your bills.

Most of your dying patients will not be able to pay their bills to you.

so then, do you want to be patriotic, still be nice and remain miserably broke??

@ Poster

You have to write and pass an examination for Nigerians who have foreign medical degrees given by the Medical and dental council of Nigeria, after that you will do 1 year of internship at any approved institution.

The Federal government teaching hospitals pay the most, (almost US$1000 in some of them per month as a house officer) but the pay in private institutions is much less.

After that you will be given a full practicing license, which allows you to work as a medical officer. You will then need to do the compulsory 1 yr NYSC program.

To do residency, you will need to writy the board entrance exams, it is done twice a year in various specialties. and then you'll apply to be a resident in any approved hospital, the salary is a bit higher than it is for house officers.

I think it is a good thing to want to return home after studying outside. The working conditions and pay is not what it should be, but things will definately get better. You should also note that the conditions of service (salary) in Nigeria is better than in many other countries. I can say this from information i've got from many doctors from different parts of the world.

good luck my dear friend,

sometime ago, a doctor (nigerian) was holidaying in nigeria, the guy has had 20years of experience in brazil, so he said he would give free treatment till he goes back to brazil, but the board of doctors here wont let him because he doesnt have a license or something like that ,

Thats completely normal, and it should be like that in any normal country. You can't practise as a doctor in any country without fulfilling their licensing requirements. He had good intentions, but he should have applied for a license to practise first.

shocked Clearly. this is a case of "YOU DON ENTER ONE CHANCE" Dokitor, Abegi O! Please board the next Virgin Nigeria flight available!!! As a naija born bloke, there is no hope in the Health Mininstry, If the elites and even our Lawmakers are travelling abroad for medical check-up, just for a mild catarrh. Mate, the handwriting is on the wall. Run!!!

The reason why this kind of thing happens in Naija is the same reason we have been in one spot for the past decades, Corruption, embezzlement of public funds and bad leadership.

We all hope to return one day. I really wish I could work in Nigeria tho'. Nigeria needs help
Re: Back To Nigeria After Medical School? by ziga: 10:47pm On Jul 11, 2008
cheesy Yes, i hope to return back home ASAP

The truth is, a lot of people who see only the ills in Naija are just waiting for good things to start happening and they will be on the next virgin Naija flight back home. There's always no place like home.

Right now things are not @ its best but with all the potentials in Nigeria, all i see a giant about to be reborn.

I'll prefer to be a part of that change (even if its a small one) than watch good things happen from far, and then start to rejoice and celebrate with the true winners.

Re: Back To Nigeria After Medical School? by oluwafunto: 3:03am On Jul 12, 2008
Going back home is not a bad idea at all. I plan on doing the same myself. My advice to you is too have like a steady source of income .Maybe by working for the UN or something and then having the mindset that working in naija is like a "voluntary position"; because i dont know how $1000 per month would help paying up already acquired school loans. Or you could do the six months here six months there thing , but then again.

But I wasn't thinking of living in naija after med school.

I mean, the decision is not for me to make alone.
