@topic
In other words, a kidnapper can pick up a kid on the street
When asked what he's doing, he simply arrested the kid for a crime he's not willing to say?

I will quickly add the offense of "Loitering Near a Gutter with Intent to Inhale" to the list of excuses that will henceforth empower me to arrest scantily clad women for disciplinary measures whenever I visit Lagos State.

With open sewers galore everywhere you look in Lagos, the enabling environment is conveniently in place for me to perform numerous citizen's arrests and other patriotic acts when I get there.

@kobojunkie and other offshore Nigerians may be we could use your experience here, only if you can articluate for us things that can be done to strengthen these new laws. It is not enough to be pessimistic.

exactly,if we keep on criticising every single law/action the government lays out, then we might as well tell him to leave the governors seat and find one of the area boys in oshodi or lagos island to be governor instead

well the law realting to arresting of innocent relative(s) in lieu of the criminal as being in existence. this is not a new law. under the criminal law, there are no vicarious liability.

It is sad that despite all the billions spent on Nigerian education in the last decades, most of my countrymen are still not capable of joined up thinking. Sad

The reason armed robbers are so brutal in Nigeria is because they could see the barbaric "justice" meted out to their unlucky members who get caught by the public. If an armed robber sees the video posted by redhotchick and then goes on operation the next day just how brutal do you think that armed robber will be to his victims. They might be armed robbers but they are still human and would take revenge.

I performed a citizens arrest on a bloke in London while working as a security guard, when i told the guy that in my country they burn thieves, he said we must be really stupid then because if he was a thief in my country , he would carry a gun and shoot the security guard and everybody that try to arrest him.
There are many people on this board that always jump up to defend Nigeria despite it being clear that Nigerians have turned the country into a shithole with their corruption, greed and barbarity Sad Sad Sad don't you guys understand that in order to be a change one must realize that things are wrong in the first place.
After watching that video i now think the country should be renamed Moronia and that the UN should isolate that part of the world to protect the cerebral integrity of the human race. Nigerian population keeps exploding without the necessary additional infrastructure and resources to accomodate the exponential population growth . There should be worldwide legislation against such rampant stupidity and against having children in such corrupt environment.

actually, its the other way round. justice is about an eye for an eye. in a country where the police are ineffectual or in direct collaboration with the men of the underworld - mob justice is the only way citizens have to get back at armed robbers.

imagine if armed robbers come to your  close, operate undisturbed for hours, maim, gang rape, divest people of their hard earned belongings - and as usual the police 'have no vehicl, no fuel no walkie talkie'  - later  you now catch a thief in the act. are you going to hand him over to police, who will put him back on the street, or are you going to exact your revenge for what his comrades in crime did?

i'm not justifying mob action, but it is also about the only way that the victims of crime can get back at the criminal element

Then you may be pleased to read in Yesterday's guardian how an innocent man was killed by a mob.

He was on his way home when a motorbike grazed him. enraged, he grabbed sand from the ground and threw it at the bike. The bike stopped and the passenger brought out a knife, so he took to his heels running for his life.
A bystander saw him running and shouted "Ole! Thief! Thief!"
In a jiffy men with matchets arrived, surrounded him and cut him several times. in the ensuing mob beating, someone even stabbed him in his testicles.

before eyewitnesses could arrive to explain, he was already freely bleeding. he died soon afterwards in a hospital.

happily, police arrested the guy who raised the alarm. If i was in Lagos, i'D have gone over to the station and paid the police to break both his legs.

thats wrong, mention one country where an eye for an eye has worked and not made the criminal deadlier,
california where the electric chair is used, has not dettered criminals
guillianis right realist method in new york did not eradicate crime
i can go on and on,to prove it usually produces a counter effect to what its supposed to,on the other hand the metropolitan police in uk do not carry guns but batons and we have less than 5 deaths a year(don't have the stats but its definitely round that fig) even in spite of the higher incidence of guns and knife attacks, like the saying goes a cornered enemy is a desperate one, and when people are desperate, they will go fully machiavellian on anybody in their path,a friend of mine whose dad was an assistant commissioner of police almost ten years ago was a victim, after the dad had retired, armed robbers came to their house in gra ikeja and killed everybody only one of the brothers escaped cause he wasnt at home,in  the united kingdom apart from gang on gang stabbings and killings ,you will rarely see any incidence of armed robbery(not saying there isnt)and its as a result of not using the eye for an eye thing in their criminal justice

If that is the case, then you all are under arest. NO BODY SHOULD MOVE! ALL OF UNA MAKE UNA KNEEL DOWN FOR WHERE EVER UNA DE! PUT YA HAND  UP AND FACE THE WALLS (except there is no wall near by) If you want to know the reason for this arrest, first you need to wire 150000 nira to my account for the necessary paper work.

Thank God o, was getting tired of police arresting inocent family members for the sake of having a criminal as relative. But I doubt this law will change anything our police can still do what ever they feel like and if you complian and remind them if the new law they will plant AK47 on you and say you are a  member of your relative's gang.
