Instead of having the usual large engagement and large wedding parties on 2 days, we had a register office wedding first with a reception for our friends only. We had about 100 friends and everyone still says it's the best wedding reception they'D been to and we had so much fun into the night. It was our party, our DJ, our MC, our everything. My sister organised the wedding for us as we are based in the UK and she's gone on to do such for people who were on the day and wanted something similar. You can write me (my email address if on my profile) if you want to contact her, she might be able to help you. We left the engagement party for our parents, it was their party, didn't know most of the people there but we managed to carve a little section for our friends.

And congratulations.
