You got to think at one time South Africa had a bigger GNP than Brittain back in the 1960's. They could afford to splurge on themselves, since they were only 5 million people (minus the blacks who shared none of this).

Drusilla, a bigger GDP than Britain, are you sure? South Africa only had 5 million people? Where did you get this information from? Ikamefa, I will try to find some on Jo´Burg and make a new thread if you want, but it will take some time! BY THE WAY, has anyone been to Cape Town?

South Africa is EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL . But it's so sad to see that the white people over there rule South Africa. But anyway South Africa is really beautiful . It's probably the MOST beautiful country of Africa. Why can't all the African countries look like that ? Where did the rest go wrong??

Where did the rest go wrong?? People will probably tear my head off but the others went wrong because of their greediness. South Africa was mostly developed under the influence of the Brits and the Afrikaans. Unlike we black people, they don't just build up the wealth in their father's compund, they think of communal development. I'm not saying that the Afrikaans were justified in their apartheid policy though. Drusilla, a bigger GDP than Britain, are you sure? South Africa only had 5 million people? Yeah, for a long time, the SA rand was equal to the dollar and their GDP per capita was high but lets not forget that this was not divided over the entire population but over the 13% white population of the country. Thats what Drusilla meant by 5m people. White people who had access to the mineral resources and wealth of the country.

gee, nice pics, I live in cape town. and those pictures say more than I can say about cape town. Its splendid, the sunrise, sunset, weather, its so dynamic, plus the winter is not crazy, its like a cold summer day, so, one can live comfortably here all year round. So soo many clean beaches, depending on what you want, nice ones with big waves for surfing too, malls are countless if you love to spend. wide range of night-clubs for those who like to dress and dance, Nice theatres, and if nature's your thing, well, countless mountains to climb, table mountain, lion's head, if your crazy enough, they have a set of 12 called the 12 desciples , if you've got yourself some money and holiday's on your mind, don't miss cape town. Accomodation is a bit costly though,

I live in Cape Town, have lived here all my life and these pictures, although good, paint an inaccurate picture of the city and South Africa as a whole. In Cape Town, you'll find that about 20 percent of black people live in dire poverty without adequate housing and where government services are considered a luxury. The worst thing about South Africa with it's relatively strong economy and rapid growth is that we've not shared the wealth amongst all the people to an extent where poverty is arrested.
So please folks, these pictures are a minor reflection of Cape Town, don't be fooled by the hype.

smokie, come on, you have ramshackled areas everywhere in the world (it is not solely confined to Cape Town) even in London you have areas where you are "deadman walking" if you dare to pass through them! Cape Town is - despite its other face - still leaps and bounds ahead of any major Nigerian city in terms of infrastructure, entertainement, lifesytle, affluence, security, jobs etc. It is just as if you don´t find anything to complain at a sight of a "beautiful child" and so you just tell him/her to go and blow the nose. Cape Town is magnificient and sparkling as a whole and it is not a minority who enjoys the sparkle. You have a growing and flourishing BLACK middle class instead of the rest of Africa where it is decreasing in rapid numbers,

I would consider myself middle class, I live in a nice neighbourhood- close to the Waterfront- but I'm not fooled, every where I look I see poverty stare back at me. I suppose it's not bad as in Naija. Ppl should not come here and think life is all good, because it's not. One thing I love about my city though is the relative cleanliness.

Smokie, I'm sorry to say this my brother but that's a great lie. Yes, there is poverty in Cape Town and the ruling party of the province mostly care about white people but most of our black brothers think that they should just sit and wait for things to come to them. I can safely say that 80% of Cape Town is very beutiful and all those brothers and sisters who are poor need to make sure that they take care of what they have and stop vandilizing.

Hmmm, one of the problems I perceive is that so many scramble wealth, demographics, attractive architecture and polical-history into one big confusing mess, Interestingly, the photographs are from www.kaapstad (dot something or other) , note: the name of the site from which the photos are taken is not in English, nor Zulu,, nor isiXhosa, Sotho or Venda , BUT is reflective of the IMPRESSION that the CITY of C.T. (Cape Town) would like to have investors and prospective tourists have! NOTE II: the Apartheid story in South Africa is not mere history- in matter of fact it continues, its legacy continues The suffering of the majority of South Africans (black South Africans) is a reflection of the evils of the system - that has been internalised by both black and white South Africans. NOTE III: lest it be forgotten, that much of the fore-seen beauty (and it is undeniably awesome) was not accesible for most of the country's recent history- as the 'Dompas' (PASS LAW) outlawed travel of and by black South Africans into 'white' cities such as South African cities were categorized (white, Indian, 'coloured' and black areas). So,much more is valid: and the Truth and Reconciliation hearings brought much truth to surface and that to the public eye Thereby, so many in the world became aware of the attrocities committed there (here for me) in that period and so are hopefully less likely to repeat these attrocities (or are they - compare the current situation and oppression in South Africa's neighbour Zimbabwe and South Africa's pathetic 'quiet diplomacy' ie. do nothing). Now, today (2007-03-21) is a Holiday in South Africa, becuase of Sharpeville. In connection with that, with Cape Town, let us reflect on District Six. District Six was in C.T. I'll stop here. I invite (1) Photos of the said suffering in C.T. and (2) the story of District Six. Astrape! (Greek, meaning: Light). Astrape - often applied to Lightning. In Ancient and koine Greek, as in the New Testament. The return (not literal, but personal) of Christ (I can mention here-Administrator as someone on this thread mentioned "Jesus Christ" , !) so, as I was stating; His return is accompanied by 'light': a reference to 'evils' (such as Apartheid) becoming manifest. So, well back to C.T. (Cape Town). NOTE III: as daar mense hier is what Afrikaans kan of wou praat, natuurlik is hul welkom. (as per Rules: Translation: if there are some here that speak Afrikaans or wish to learn Afrikaans, naturally they are welcome).

I suspect that last picture refers to Harare, Zimbabwe where demolitions took place recently, not to CT
slums are a fact of life - due to rapid rural-urban drift, without proper planning. It can be minimised by proper planning and infrastructure provision.
I saw many black folk in those pics as well, things have to improve, and I believe they are improving, at least in SA

no need to get worked up mate, I asked a question, all you needed to do is answer it I know about the demolitions in Harare, Zimbabwe I have heard of none in Harare, Cape Town. and oh, I have checked google, the pictures DO refer to Zimbabwe, NOT Cape Town SA. refrain from making misleading assertions you can make 'better use of the internet' yourself by reading the captions below pictures before posting them, websites aren't picturebooks
