What Will You Do If Someone You Love Feels Depressed?
« on: July 09, 2008, 02:46 AM »

I don't remember where I heard this question but this is how it goes:

If someone you love feels depressed should you stay around him/her 100 per cent or give him/her space?

Well, when I am depressed (usually for a day) I like my space and I don't eat.  However, If i know someone who seems to be depressed for more than two days  - I usually send them an I'm to let them know I care and I am all ears when they are ready to talk.

It usually work for me

Depends on the type of depression, if its clinical then it imperative to seek medical help. Whether clinical depression from a chemical imbalance or short term depression over an event it is always important for the people closest to the depressed person to show support. The closer and more support given to a depressed person the more help the it is.

I had a friend who was clinically depressed to the point of having suicidal thoughts, I quickly learned that I had to make sure she was fine by constantly checking on her. Even if I was having a bad they I would pretend as if everything was great so she would not be affected. This helped me let stuff slide without worrying about dumb shytuff.

wooo, savanaha, you have some good take on the topic but what is clinical depression from a chemical imbalance?  Is this person black or non-black racial type?  What chemical composition is missing or in excess? Please I'm not being sarcastic but your comment set off a flag in my brain and I want to explore that subject of chemical imbalance and its relationship to depression some more.

@Stephen, we are all depressed at one time or another, it is human to experience mood swings and sometimes we lock into a depressed state of mind.  The care for that person will depend on the root of the problem.  Are they grieving over loss of a relative; is it coming from lack of emotional nurturing; is it as a result of terminal illness in a relative; is it from a spousal infidelity,  you know.  There are instances where reclusion will help the person to heal and come back strong and there are also instances where consistent contact and touch is what the person need to massage their soul back into reality.

Hmmmm a tough one for me.  Depending on the situation and what friend.  I'D be around and just let them know that if they want to talk, am there.  If they want space, it's all theirs.

Off the top of my head, Clinical depression is when you have a formal diagnosis of the illness. It affects any race. A couple of composition that comes to mind is the levels of Serotonin and Cortisol.

In addition to the above, the level of depression felt would determine whether to stay away or stay close and depends on the person's moodswing.

People with long-term or recurring depression however sometimes like to be left alone because all they want to do is curl up in a dark room with only their thoughts for comfort. They have days they don't want to go out, open the mail, receive visitors, pick up the telephone and would actually go out their way to avoid meeting people.

However, Vitamin D is known to help hence the reason those type of people should be gently coerced to leave their room and go for a walk in the sun. Talking therapies also works so it is nice to stick around and be ready to lend a ear when they need it.

I guess what I am trying to say is that for every type of depression, and as with most illness, don't force your company on them, and at the same time, let them know you are always there.
