Robbers are killing too many policemen - Okiro cries outTHE rate at which policemen on duty are mowed down in the prime of their lives is giving the police sleepless nights, as something must be done urgently to check it. The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, raised the alarm on Thursday while presenting cheques worth over N35 million to the next of kin of 75 policemen killed by armed robbers, in road traffic accidents or were lynched by mobs. Okiro, who was represented by the DIG “A”, Ogbonnaya Onovo, said the public was becoming conscious of the supreme sacrifices paid by policemen. According to him, “the rate at which we are losing policemen to armed robbers and irate mobs is becoming alarming and uncomfortable to the force hierarchy and we need to check this situation with everything at our disposal.” Okiro noted that the police authorities had been doing their best by providing policemen with bulletproof vests, helmets and other accessories that could shield them from bullet. He attributed the rising wave of crime to small arms proliferation, which he said the force was fighting “tooth and nail to check.” Okiro added that statistics had shown all over the world that policing was the most dangerous job as a policeman goes out in the morning for his day’s job and does not know whether he would return home alive. Okiro said the amount was being provided for the families to alleviate their sufferings as there was no amount of money that could replace life and urged them to make judicious use of the money in training the children. About 6 months ago, Yar Adua consulted the British for help with training the police. How is that plan going? Any progress??

typical nigerians, inspite of the fact that the iraq war s unjust the british forces get the highest respect cutting across the citizens and even opposition parties, here nigerians feel the best comments is to make fun of policemen who in spite of their dire conditions of living are protecting their families and loved ones in nigeria and are being killed in large numbers, east or west nigeria is your home, and patriotism is a large part of nationbuilding o @post i only hope they do something about these gys welfare and have proper life insurance so their children, wife don't suffer, if we can spend so much funding peacekeeping forces abroad, then we should be a ble to appropriate funding for correct and safe equipment for the police

The British police are not in the best position to train Nigerian police. They are facing different challenges. While British police are facing the challenge of KNIFE Crime with negligible small arms proliferation, The Nigerian police is facing Huge GUN crime with unimaginable level of small arms proliferation. We need to be sincere and look for an home grown solution to our policing problems.

I fail to understand what the Knife Crime incident has to do with training Nigerians. Do the Chicago massacres of some weeks ago mean the US police can not help train the police in Mexico if called to do so?? I am drawing a blank here as to how the one equals the other here, Help me!.

You miss the point Kobo
he isn't saying the British police is incompetent because people are getting knifed, he means the nature of the challenges being faced in both countries are different - knife crime is more prevalent in the UK while heavy arms are used to commit crime in Nigeria - meaning the capabilities of the UK police are not the most suitable to train on how to deal with such problems.

What goes around comes around. The Police always sell/rent out their arms or collect bribes to overlook unlawful possession of arms by this thieves 'because they think they won't be the one to suffer the consequences of the robbers action. Okiro should not cry over what he and the rest of the curropt millitary can correct. Let the police, Army, Immigration and all other concerned organisations stop these thieves from importing guns to Nigeria. If they can't tackel the problem this way . . . . .
