Hi guys,
Does anyone feel like I do? Scrapping the Nigerian Movie industry would be better than watching the rubbish they give us. Its no wonder what 7days work can produce, absolute rubbish. We don't have movie critics in the country, neither do we have reviews or screening times, weird even the scripts are not right!!!! My goodness, they tend to repeat the same statement due to lack of words by the writer.
Or, maybe if we take our time to find some good producer, good writer and maybe good actors/actresses, then it might work. I mean, I only watch these movies when Ive got nothing to do, only to criticise them though but I wont fail to mention that erm, violated was one great movie that ever came out from Nollywood, keeping fate is also a good one but that is just a few out of loads that come out on a daily basis.
Just on onlinenigeria, which is a good website, credit must be given where its due. I just cannot believe that after reading so hard and decided to go on there after God knows how long it was that I haven't gone on there, I decided to check a movie out 'worst enemy' Omotola has really deteriorated, its like a Nigerian version of the Indian movie 'the promise' well, from the little I saw o!!!! but is that how bad we've gone? Lack of originality!!!! I remember a Ghanian film like this as well where Jackie Appiah played double roles I think, one of which she was a club singer
Abeg, lets sign petition to scrap the industry jo, not like those people kuku are making it big neither are they regarded as 'celebrity', even people who come out of big brother house are better known than they are (well, thats just for a laff)
Later guys

Bros you sure say you get your facts right before you dey insult industry wey dey grow day by day. You mention the writers lacking words, I don't think they lack Words brother because Nollywood producers don't buy scripts good money. If they pay you 100k men you get luck ooh.So how do you expect to see a good script when they don't pay very well. As for the Actors we have great Actors and lots of them. Nollywood would get there someday.Just remember the marketers controls the Industry so they are all just Business men they don't care what quality of movie you produce they just after their gain.

Movie distributors control hollywood too, yet a lot of good movies get made. The difference is piracy.

@seun,
Thanks for seeing the funny side of my post, 'preciate it.
@ powerofmap,
first off, I'm a girl. But all the same, cheers! Anyhoo! Ive never produced a movie before but I would think that movies even series do follow scripts, at least, I was reading something about 24 yesterday and it was said the writer's went on strike.
Fair enough, scripts might not be followed to the latter, but then would you say our actors and actresses lack common sense? Sometimes, their spoken english, pronunciation, etc is just so annoying, You see someone wanting to be like the American one minute and the next, its British english. The directors sometimes don't even think that there is a need to re-take some shots when they can clearly see mistakes in it, abi then no dey watch the movie over and over again or den no they do they 'cut'!!!!! again thing other people dey do?
I pray they get there soon really as one of my friends almost tore me open when I mentioned that, as much as we hear Nollywood to be no 3 in the world (well, for the number of movies produced) production wise, they still seem to be very very far from it in exception of some really well produced movies. (Violated, maybe out of bounds, keeping faith I think where Bimbo and her friend were calling juju 'jazz') lol. And I wont deny, we have some really good actors/actresses but how are they treated? Bukky Ajai once mentioned that when she went to S/A for a movie shoot, she was given a trailer (with her name on it) here, just use person house even if people dey inside the house dey talk none of our business, make we just use am quick quick, Haba!!!
Probably if there is an association for criticising these people they would buckle up and indeed I'll be queuing to criticise the movie industry anytime anyday.
We will get there someday, hmmmm!!!! ok o! I think they need a kick in the BUTT!!!! 'xcuse my turenchi'

Where do I sign? Where do I sign? Oh you should also know I am good at forgery, so however many siggies we need. . . 100, 1000, 10,000, I can do 'em easy! I'll do anything to make sure I never, ever have to
See another movie with a senseles name like Roses Above and Beyond the Thorns of a Tree - Pt 1 -45.
See RMD in Dungarees Jean shorts and face cap acting like a 12yrs old.
See RMD in Dungrarees Jean shorts and face cap acting like a 17yrs old.
See RMD in Dungarees Jean shorts and face cap acting like a 22yrs old (Yeah, somehow. . . they've convinced themselves a grown man looking like a fool = Ayounge)
Hear Jim Iyke speak in the retarded way he thinks is cute.
See Noah Ramsey or Ramsey Noah. . . whatever the heck his name is squinting his eyes because that's the he can play romantic man.
Watch Noah Ramsey or Ramsey Noah sweat like a pig, his armpit dripping like shower. . . while trying to be romantic because of the lighting they use.
Listen to song sang in the most annoying, nerve grating voice ever, telling you the entire movie withing the first 5 mins. It's like. . . Okay, thanks for that. Next!
Watch a movie shot with a shaky camera by the time you are done, you wonder if you just took a ride on a ferris wheel. God help you if you stand up immediately afterwards, you will find yourself yakata on the floor because of dizziness.
Listen to people shout "O de gbe koruba yen wa si bi" in the movie and wonder. . . which Koroba? What does Koruba have to do with a love scene? Abi have Nigerians found a way to use Bucket as a sex toy? Only for you to realize it's not part of the movie, it's the background noise the editor did not see fit to clean up before selling it.
Ay! The more I think about, the more determined I am to sign this petition. Did I say 10,000? Forget that. . . 100,000 siggies all from me.
More grease to your elbow, my good man! God speed!

Honestly why would anyone want to pirate Naija Movies? This is what is giving them the illusion that they are good.
It is supposed to be the other way around, Nollywood movies should be begging to be pirated and even then sef, the Piraters or Pirators (whatever) should tell them "Hmmm, Yeah. . . maybe next time, right now we kind of busy with Ghana Movies. They are younger, better and more appealing to the senses. Oh now, please don't cry. . . maybe if you improve yourself, we can work something out, okay?"

I thought of about 2348 wiseass cracks but resorted to being sane about this. I don't usually possess my marbles, so y'all should take me seriously.
Problems
Creativity Pirates Funds Cinemas Standards to mention a few
Solutions
Hire a few nairalanders Liaise with the pirates Rob a bank or get a loan you'll take 39 years to pay back Erect 20 in every major city Submit all your works for scrutiny and I'll rate them. Probably the best will get 2 of 10.
Thank God I'm being extremely objective.
Since the solutions laid out are not likely to be adopted, I say scrap it. It's taken only so long. Let Stealla Damascus and Omotola go and get ICAN or whatever.
Must we make films? We have very very good music videos. let's stick to that and watch good foreign movies. All those nationalists that scream foul, let us develop our own will check out in puff! Go and read books, surf the net, listen to music, get laid etc. I'm sure you won't develop a brain tumour or skin cancer if you don't watch any of the 1208 permutations of Love (Real love, Big love, Lovely Love. poisonous love, you catch the drift)
I've signed on the dotted line!

I have to disagree with you on scrapping the Nigerian film industry. Most of those movies are so badly done that I just see them as comedy, so please let's keep it as a source of comic relief to Nigerians and others around the world. On the other hand it is the third largest movie industry in the world and provides employment for millions of Nigerians. The best thing to do would be to regulate the industry as opposed to scrapping it completely.

Word!! Yeah third largest industry my ass, they are so fake and the worst copycats that ever existed in the history of entertainment. I cannot remember when I stopped watching them because they end up making you angry. Here is what we should do: The actors should all be shipped off to atlantis because I cannot remember the last time any actor conveyed the right emotion to you. I am not sure if there is anyone who has watched the titanic and not be moved even if romantic films are not your niche, just replace the leonardo and kate with jim Iyke and ini edo( that thought just made me nauseous ) abi are we all forgetting the "apphaulful" performance of bob manuel at the just concluded gulder ultimate "sham" simply put the movie industry don soak garri with standards and quality. You want to talk actors watch things fall apart and even though its a pretty old setting you can almost get lost in the village of umuofia then you tell me we are going forward huh! The only entertainment industry taking this world by storm in the near future is the music industry we can all see that they work hard, but movies Let Us Scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap it. They have no style, today they are imitating Casino( noah ramsey and Genevieve ) and they have gone as low as that indian film where the dog avenged his master and the culprit is none other than the oscar winner for the most irritating nigerian actor Desmond Elliot , we should not scrap it abi wait until Jim Iyke becomes the Jet Li of nollywood oh wait the name of the industry is even a bad copy, abeg I don dey vex before I spoil my keyboard because of all this people.

Dear Poster:
Ordinarily, one should not bother responding to this sort of post which is obviously not a product of any form of worthwhile thinking. But just so the enlighten minds that have responded here but are not practitioners in the Nigerian movie industry will know what the real problems are and how dismissive thoughts like yours do not help in anyway, I will humbly submit the little I know.
Just so you know, I am a filmmaker. Although I have not taken part in any Nollywood movie, either as an actor (which is what I was) or as a director (which is what I am now), I will claim affinity with this industry. There’s a lot that is wrong with Nollywood, however, to suggest that the solution lies with scrapping the industry is truly myopic.
A lot of crappy movies have come out of nollywood and they continue to do so. This is however not a solely Nigerian phenomenon. We see only a side of Hollywood; those who know will tell you that only about 8% of Hollywood films are truly worthy of their name but because we only get to see those movies, we equate the whole of Hollywood with that fraction. The level of crappiness may defer but it’s crap all the same.
I am saddened daily when I see how fellow movie practitioners keep celebrating the phenomenon of Nollywood while leaving the work at hand undone. They scream that we are the 3rd largest movie industry in the worlds, yet no one is selling 10, 000 copies right now. Oh, I know how imbecilic we can be, but to ask that we be scrapped is equally imbecilic, if not more!
For all the ills of Nollywood, you cannot but accept that, either by omission or commission, we achieved something there. We took something and turned it to a global phenomenon, one that is worthy of emulation. If imitation is the best form of flattery, then the many mini nollywoods now scattered all over the continent is testimony to what we have created. DSTV has Africa magic Plus, you know!
See guys, the biggest problem is distribution; not piracy, not the crap that’s being churned out daily. If a distribution framework is put in place, you’ll see the quality of the movies rise instantly because what that says to that filmmaker who wants to do a good job is that his work will get to all the places it needs to get to, which is what must happen before buyers then make a choice to buy or not. Have you wondered why people like Amaka Igwe have not released a film in 5 years? Why she has stayed with television? It’s distribution!!!!!!!!!
I have not shot my first film in Nolyywood and I have no plans of doing so until distribution is sorted out, between, whoever sorts that out will have too much money.
Have u also considered what harm those 20 films-in-one-DVD’s are doing?
Finally, when you dare to seek the elimination of the industry based on the crap that comes out of it, do you ask that those who have made genuine efforts to make quality films, people like Amaka Igwe, Tunde Kelani, Tade Ogidan and others be scraped too?!
Let us critique this industry constructively so that it can truly grow.
