Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by teeroy(m): 5:42pm On Jun 14, 2006
I have been wanting to ask this question for a long time but after viewing France being held by the Swiss, i decided to let it out. Henry had so many easy chances but failed to convert any. The story has been the same for years now. We all know that the trademark of the legendary strikers is the ability to perform and score in those high-pressure matches especially when they are wearing the colours of their country.

Whenever Henry features for France in a major tournament,i really do not expect much from him especially with him giving back passes to the Swiss keeper!!

Could this be a gross case of stagefright or could it be that the guy has limitations which he can't exceed? Waiting to hear from all of ya!!
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by GUNNER(f): 5:55pm On Jun 14, 2006
i really don't know why 2 tongue

maybe its easier for him to score hat-tricks against the likes of Norwich!  kiss

or more likely that he is just not a Big-Match Player  undecided

whatever, as long as he does the business for Arsenal   wink
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by kitaun(m): 7:04pm On Jun 14, 2006
to hell,as long as henry does the scoring 4 my darling team,i care less, especially as he is being misused thoroughly in the french team and the major prob is the coach not henry
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by otokx(m): 7:37pm On Jun 14, 2006
@kitaun

are you saying all the different french coaches made the same mistake with Henry?
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by Nobody: 8:08pm On Jun 14, 2006
Henry is really not as deadly a striker as he's propped up to be, true he is phenomenal on pace and acuracy but against top class defences he just seems to wilt and melt away into the shadows. Most of his exploits are down to scoring 4 goals or hat tricks against the likes of Southampton, Norwich or Blackburn.

Why did he not move to barcelona? Because he's just not as good as Eto'o, Deco and Ronaldinho and he was afraid of sitting on the bench!
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by GUNNER(f): 6:05am On Jun 15, 2006
@teeroy, i culled this 4rom skysports, maybe then u will get ur answer as to why

"Henry fails for France"! lipsrsealed

Henry is without doubt one of the best players in football today, yet his form for club and country have looked worlds apart, world class domestically, pedestrian on the international stage.

So what is it about the talismanic forward and his country that fails to combine?

There are many excuses that have been bandied about after France's opening game against Switzerland, the pitch was too dry and the referee was too harsh just two of the moans from the French camp.

Could it simply be that the tactics Les Bleus employ just do not work?

Looking at Arsenal we can see that there is width, Fredrik Ljungberg, Robert Pires and Alessander Hleb offering quick balls into Henry as well as giving him balls to run onto.

For France, there is very little natural width, Franck Ribery likes to cut inside or run for himself, and the ageing Zinedine Zidane does not provide the same consistent energy and service up to Henry as Cesc Fabregas.

The role given to Henry by the two coaches could be the reason for his erratic form for France.

Arsene Wenger allows him to roam. You will frequently see the forward on the left wing, dropping deep into midfield or hanging out on the touchline.

Raymond Domenech, on the other hand, uses Henry as an out-and-out striker. He rarely drops into midfield to collect the ball and is not as involved in forward play as he is for Arsenal.

For France to be successful in the World Cup it is imperative that they play to Henry's strengths.

He carried Arsenal to a Champions League final and his brilliance has changed many a game. Domenech needs to allow Henry to roam, then he will be able to provide an attacking option both with goals and support play which France desperately need.

Henry has the potential to be the best player ever to grace the game, but until he can consistently perform for his country he will always be dogged by the suggestion that he can go missing in big games.
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by hucarson(m): 11:02am On Jun 15, 2006
Henry is just a mediocre and he panics when it gets to the big stage.
He is not a big match player and he will never be. UEFA, EURO Cup and now the World Cup??
All the talks about the way Domenech uses him to operate is just an endless stream of pretentious bullshiit.
Henry has now played under 3-4 coaches in France. Are u saying all these managers don't know how to use Henry to the best of his potentials?
Aime Jacquet, Roger Lemerre, Jacques Santini and Raymond Domenech CANNOT be wrong with their tactics.
World Cup teams are not Norwich, West Brom FC and Sunderland.

And World Cup pitches are not like the box Arsenal plays in grin grin grin

it is easier for henry to run 100m all over the Arsenal pitch because of its small size but it isn't easy to do that even in the Paris Stadium.

Henry's Summary: CLUB HERO, COUNTRY ZERO

i'm surprised at this, and i'm sure its not a mistake from you - you should know that all football pitches, at least any stadium certified for play by FIFA, my dear, have the same length and width. i must chip in that these standards vary anyway, and highbury conforms with probably the smallest sized standards. we all should not make it look like highbury is sum backyard grass.
its all good we're outta the north london stadiumnow, and that excuse wont be there anymore, we can now go do our magic on a "bigger" pitch

GUNNER's quote from skysports should be enough to justify the question poised by the thread - make Professor Wenger the french pilot and see what he makes of all the players, all of them, not only henry.

to be frank with you, the coach has a role to play in this issue. (follow the skysport analysis by GUNNER and you'll learn more about that from it.)

@otolorin,
I will implore u to always check your facts before u mis-inform fellow Nairalanders.
Highbury has the smallest playing area in the whole wide world. I believe all football fans know this fact except u.
There's nuthing FIFA or English FA can do about this because the English people thrives on tradition and the FA ain't going to build a stadium for Arsenal.
Anfield and Old Trafford are about 20-30 yards longer than the garden(Highbury).

Henry has been consistently inconsistent and he is a complete country zero.
U can bet Henry's always going to scuff it on big matchdays.
There's nuthing Wenger can do with France if he is the manager unless Wenger has to convert all the Spaniards and African players to French citizens.
Besides, with all Wenger's acclaimed wizardry,he could only finish 5th on the domestic league.
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by otolorin(m): 3:21pm On Jun 15, 2006
yeah, huc, i modified my post as per the pitch size and dont be soo furious.

i sure you understand wat i meant by FIFA n FA standard, if you dont, you can go check up my post now that i've modified it.

and wen it comes to mis-information, you should go sit up too as regard dis claim you have on your post:
hucarson:

Besides, with all Wenger's acclaimed wizardry,he could only finish 5th on the domestic league.

i blieve we're not here to pick each other's mistake but rather to discuss football at its most exciting state.

i still think henry's under-performance is a coaching problem,
its a fact that country teams are always having the best players in the country, and it will always be better a combination than wat entails at the domestic side.

i believe the comment by skysport as recorded in GUNNEr's post is true to henry's case.

peace!
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by hucarson(m): 3:38pm On Jun 15, 2006
@ otolorin,
I deliberately said 5th because Arsenal surely robbed Tottenham of the 4th place position.
White Hart lane fans are still furious of Wenger's magic that poisoned the food of their darling team.

Henry's under-performance is not a coaching problem.
The dude himself is the problem as it was evident in the UEFA finals against Barcelona.
Henry was absolutely missing and he squandered all the chances presented to him on a platter of gold.
Was Wenger not the manager that took Arsenal to that match?
It's high time we call a spade a spade.
Henry is fake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by mochafella(m): 8:03pm On Jun 15, 2006
I actually believe he is currently being used wrongly, Theirry is at his best when he is running at defenders and beating them with pace, you cannot do that if you are the edge of the box with your back to goal. I think we are all forgetting that Thierry performed quite well at France '98. Granted his profile then was not as high as his profile now but he performed well. If anything that was probably his best tournament for France. He scored only three goals but he was lively and a threat to the opposition when he played. That was partly the reason why Juve paid 14 mill for him a few moths later.

You will also observe that in France '98 he was not France's main striker. That role went to Guivarch or Trezeguet. If I remember correctly France mostly played a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 with either Diomede, Thierry or Pires running the flanks. It was similar to what Monaco, Henry's club at the time played with him and Ikepba running the flanks and Sonny Anderson as the main striker.

I say stick him on the left flank with a license to roam and watch him blossom. It seems the French coaches do not watch Henry when he plays for Arsenal. Granted he is Arsenal's main striker but Arsenal build their attacks from midfield with Henry regularly picking up the ball in midfield and on the flanks. You hardly find him camped on the edge of the box like Shearer or RVN, which is what France want him to do when he plays for them.

Such a waste of talent.

Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by babwilms(m): 8:52pm On Jun 15, 2006
The problem with the French team is that the French coaches including the present coach had failed to build the team round Theory Henry. Until they change this Henry will continue to fail them. They make the guy play as a center forward which is unlike him. He needs to be given a free role, like that of Arsenal.

Then again you can argue that, how come he failed in several important matches? Well go and watch the game against Real Madrid earlier this year, the only goal he scored against Man U 3 years ago among others.

Did i hear someone call Henry fake? How can you call a striker that scores over 30 goals a season fake? Bruv do you even watch football? not been rude.

Someone even said Ashley Cole has been nut megged several times. True. But does that makes him a terrible left back?
Maldini, Carlos, Silvinho also do get nut-megged or taken on but those that make them all bad defenders? A capital NO.I beg make a valid point. Though right now he's not the best left back .
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by hucarson(m): 9:46pm On Jun 15, 2006
@Babwilms,
Exactly my point!!!!!!!!!
How can a player score 30 goals in a season and cannot make a reasonable impact in other competitons?
Thatz what makes him so FAKE.
France 98, EURO 2004, UEFA champions league? I am tired of excuses about him not being used to roam around or build a team around him.
How can u build a team around a dud player when u have the likes of Zidane in France?
Zidane rose to the occasion against England at EURO 2004 and his brilliance won the game for France.
Please. tell me how many times u have seen Henry with such individual quality to change a game outside the Premiership?
A good player will always produce quality home and away.
Ronaldinho, Luiz Ronaldo, Luis Figo and even Rasheed Yekini are living examples of big match players.
I am sorry to say Henry does not belong  to this category!

Someone said Henry scored 3 goals at France 98 but he forgot to mention those goals were against lowly rated South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
Agahowa would have scored a hatrick against these mediocre teams so thatz bullshiit.
Peter Crouch scored a hatrick against Jamaica. Does that make him good?
Henry went to Korea in 2002 and he didn't score a single goal and he finished that same season with 24 goals in the Premiership.
Whatz the correlation? We all saw his shambolic performance at the finals of the Champions League against Barca.
He squandered 3 great chances that would have won the game for the gunners.
Letz call a spade a spade,Henry develops cold feet at the big stage.
Re: Why Is Thierry Henry Mediocre In Major Tournaments? by babwilms(m): 10:05pm On Jun 15, 2006
@hucarson. What about the heart trick he scored against Milan or maybe Juve (forgot the name of the Italian club) in the champions league. Wasn't that a big game?. Against Madrid in the UEFA second round this year. To me he has done reasonably well in big matches.

Going back to 2002 worldcup. Was he the only one who failed to perform?
Yes you can build a team round the likes of Henry even with the likes of Zi-Zou in the team. But Zidane is a better option because he delivers the killer ball, not that he's better.

While I am focused more on his overall performance, you are a little hasty to dismiss his three goals. He was France's highest goal scorer at that tournament, despite playing from a wide position. Remember he was 20 and it was his first senior tournament for France, he got his 1st cap barely six months earlier, it was also his breakout tournament that cemented his place in the National team. In fact aside Owen I'm certain he was the best young player(u-21) at that tournament.

That comparison to Julius Aghahowa is not fair. It's just as bad as me saying Julius played against South Africa at the ANC 2000 and did not score a goal against them. What happens to your claim of a hat-trick against RSA then.

hucarson:

Henry went to Korea in 2002 and he didn't score a single goal and he finished that same season with 24 goals in the Premiership.
I'm sure you will remember France played 3 games in that tournament and Henry played only 1-1/4 of those games. He got a red card 24 minutes into the 2nd game. There is no doubt more was expected of him in that tournament but my claim remains that in the one tournament(France 98) where he was consistently used in a wide attacking role he produced and that was arguably on a more stressful stage, playing at home in your first senior tournament as a 20 something.

Just one match and the hawks are moving in on the "igwe" of goals?! shocked what did ronaldinho played against croatia? please make we stop all this paper football.

Did anyone watch euro 2000 final? if Henry was a mediocre then italy would have been euro 2000 finals champions; even though he didnt score he was a constant migraine to the mafioso boys defense and his mesmerizing run down the far left late in the match left the italians with no answer before Wiltord put the ball beyond Toldo's reach for the much needed equalizer. Henry is an institution and he's still getting better by the day!
