What's wrong in saying fat? It's just an adjective. A qualifying (describing) word. If what Nike says is true, then I'll join nddy in saying UK SUCKS, BIG TIME!!!!!

why is it not okay to say fat if it's okay to say skinny? some people might think calling people skinny is a compliment but it really is not. it makes you feel like you're doing it on purpose. say "slender" or "slim" that's nicer. calling someone fat isn't nice either.

because you have to! (people you know and meet i mean). it makes one feel guilty of what someone didn't really cause. i called my friend skinny (she's extremely skinny) once and she got extremely mad. so i just call her slender now. i hate being called skinny too (not that i think i am). and i don't think anyone likes it. either being called fat or skinny. chubby and slender are the right words.

Yeah i get what you're trying to say. I also don't buy the Idea of saying someone's FAT or Skinny. All i am saying is, It shouldn't hurt the person's feeling when s/he is being called that, Because you as a person shouldn't let anyone determine what you are and in turn spoil your mood and make u think bad of yourself.

well i'm forced to eat at lunch every day even when i'm not hungry because if i don't some of my friends who sit at the lunch table with me will look at me wierd and ask if i'm on a diet or why i'm trying to get skinnier. and that's really annoying same goes with one of my friends, they give her the "why are you eating. you're fat" look.

I have a fat friend (very fat). She loves it when called "fat" because she doesnt see it as something one should be embarrased about. She only gets angry when u are trying to make fun of her with it. (which is a different case entirely). So there's nothin wrong in saying someone is "fat". Likewise, I have a friend who's skinny. We call her 'lepa'. She doesnt get embarrased about it either. Infact, she brags about her stature. So what's the big deal in calling someone 'fat' or 'skinny'?

there is something wrong in calling someone fat in nigeria because i call my cousin fat all the time and she's okay with it. here however, you don't just call someone fat unless you're looking for trouble. i only say "fat"when i'm trying to describe people i don't know. i can't call my friend fat. just strangers i don't have a clue who they are.
@goodguy. will you stop telling everybody to define stuff. you've told me to define more than two words already.

It's not just the word, but the context in which the word is used that matters.
I remember when I was still in primary school, for some reason, some classmates of mine decided to start calling me a 'scapegoat'. (No, I don't know why either - perhaps they had just come across the word in a book and decided to use it to the max.) Obviously, neither I nor they knew the meaning of the word, but when they used the word, they woiuld point at me and then laugh, and after a while I got angry at them because I thought they were insulting me. Of course, it didn't help that the word had the word 'goat' in it. It was only when a teacher noticed what was going and asked what all the fuss was about that we found out the real meaning of the word.
(You can try this experiment with any word - even if you call someone 'beautiful' accompanied with pointing and laughter, they won't be flattered, I tell you!)
So the words 'fat' or 'skinny' aren't offensive in themselves; however, I guess that in the UK (and other such places), they have been used more in an offensive context than in Nigeria. I guess it's the reason why some words are OK to use at one point in time and then later on fall out of use (another example is {'handicapped/crippled' > 'disabled'})

I have a fat friend (very fat). She loves it when called "fat" because she doesnt see it as something one should be embarrased about. She hates it when you call her fat, but being a girl she pretends not to be bothered. Most women pretend a lot, so beware! If you ask her female friends, you will discover that she has been complaining, "I have one stupid male friend who's always saying I'm fat!".
