pls i need help in gettin a dependable and reliable internet connection.
i use visafone silver which sucks. i reside in shomolu very close to bariga which is within the cdma 1x coverage area and work in VI/Ajose Adeogun where the visafone head office is located and the speed is even faster at home. at home i can get 7kb/s and at work 2-4kb/s for downloads day and night though for some minutes on rare occasions it reached 42kb/s.
and i use a macbook.
i am considering mtn's 3.5g usb N10,000/month but the GPRS speed bothers me. my office is within the EDGE area. I am doubtful of starcomm's izap 'cos somolu/bariga would probably be cdma 1x.i deserve better value for my data bills.my dad uses starcomm's dial up and it aint encouraging either. have u also noticed that visafone platinum is not on the visafone website.it used to be advertised in their flyers.

got this from mtn's website

DATA SPEED
Signal   Peak Speed   Average internet browsing speed
GPRS   115 kbps   33 – 35, 8kbps
EDGE   384 kbps   Not Yet  Fully deployed
3G   384 kbps   100 - 240kbps
3.5G (HSDPA)   3.6 Mbps   800kbps

This thread has been very insightful, but surprising and confusing as hell.
Can't believe what u guys are paying in Naija  - much more than here.

I might have to rethink this few months in naija thing. I need real broadband without download restrictions for 1 of my businesses to survive. I was looking into getting a house in VGC - anyone know what's reliable there and what speeds? I wasn't expecting the 300Mbps minimum(wireless, much faster wired) I'm used to, but this is an eye-opener.

Any advice would be appreciated. OK, It's going to cost a lot more, even for what u guys are getting, but is there any way to get real high speed internet service ANYWHERE - whatever the cost? The plan was Lagos and Abuja, but I can be based wherever I can work(meaning fastest ISP).

looooooooooooooool
if u eva see 20mbps in naija(this year) let me ru mad Tongue            (300mbps ke! Huh)
there are companies dat give you up to 8mbps (through v-sat)dedicated bandwidth but saying u'll pay thru your nose is an understatement!!
there's a fibre network(GPON) they r laying in lagos(don't know where exactly), so if you can find a house that is included in the fibreplan u'll have a chance, but dat will be in 2010(minimum) cuz rite now there's not enough backbone to start giving out such speeds to individuals but there 2 undersea cables set to come in late this year and june next year respectively Undecided
and until den u're going to have to be a politician(stealing enough money everyday) to be able to afford the monthly pay for tru broadband in niaja!

you don't have to steal to get like 20-50k per month for good bandwidth, those saying you pay through your nose to get a good bandwidth are not being truthful, an average person (Financially) should be able to afford 20-50k per month as value for his or her money

Please forget it. Even the big Internet Service Providers in Nigeria do not have up to 50Mbps for their whole network.

20-50k naira can not get you starcomms speed on Vsat. You need at least 2000 dollars a month to get a reasonable speed on vsat.

is starcomms the only internet provider we have in Nigeria? heard of IPNX? heard of cool link? heard of linkserve or "Omnix" and so on?

What I am saying is that  for you to get 2meg on VSAT , you will payy at least $2000 .

Thanks a lot for your input.

50k(Naira) a month is workable(even though that's like 8 times the cost here), but $2000 just sounds crazy. I guess if there's no other choice, what can you do? Damn, that's a mortgage payment for some people here - have to totally reprogram my brain.

The GPON fiber network sounds promising, though. Have to take all this into consideration, as far as finding a house goes. The prodigal son might have to wait 'til 2010!

Glad I came to do some research here first. I have to keep up with what's going on in Naija, we hear so many conflicting things.

Please anyone that has an idea should share with us. I am sick and tired of all the bullshit starcomms is doing to us.

@epoma
  you are wrong, except if you are using it to run a business, not as a home user, there is no internet provider in Nigeria that would charge you $2000 per month as a home user,  Lai lai, even if the thing is flying like a space-jet.

stop the misinformation and if you don't want to, then provide us with links of these Nigerian VSAT companies charging $2000 for home users

@honeric01

 Sorry if am wrong, with regards to the previous discussion, the guy said he wanted a very fast internet for his business. so it wasn't a home User .First and foremost all Nigerian Vsat provider are sub agents so I would rather talk to guy from Israel, Dubai or Europe for where Vsat teleports are.
 What    init4dmoni said in his last post was very correct. I did not have to do this but i will post price list of vsat connection with a goo speed and you will see that for a good speed you will pay up to 3000 dollars a month.If you need more quote I will send.

@epoma
  If it's business package, then i think you may be right, one can only run his business with Vsat and nothing less.

I thought you meant $2000 for a home user.

Hmmm,  So its not only me. I think it started about 2 weeks ago, when i took it to their office they said they're having problems with their new modems and i should try again this week but it still isn't working but  my aircard works fine. i think the problem is probably only limited to PH

ps. Hi guys
