Govt scraps state first lady status
From Isah Ibrahim, Gusau

APPARENTLY reacting to reported feuds in the homesteads of some polygamous governors over the position of first lady, the Federal Government may have taken steps to outlaw the post at the state level, even as it is unknown to the nation's statute books.

The government, in a two-page letter from the Federal Ministry of Information addressed to all the 36 state governors through their commissioners for information, described the post at the state level as unconstitutional.

Confirming the development yesterday in Gusau, Zamfara State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Danmaliki, who spoke through the state Director of Information, Ibrahim Na'ayi Salihu, said his ministry had already received the letter and concerned authorities were notified about the development.

"I am please to inform you that we have received a circular from the Federal Ministry of Information on banning wives of the state governors from addressing themselves as first lady. According to the circular, only the wife of Mr. President will henceforth be addressed as First Lady," Na'ayi stated.

However, Na'ayi declined to make copies of the letter available to reporters, saying: "You can quote me but I cannot give you the letter."

Trust Nigerian politicians, they will adjust effectively.  They will coin another phrase or create another office for "her excellency"
In fact the govt  will regret bringing out this directive.

Probably, just might be, that a little bit of sanity is been restored to the nation.

We await as events unfold. . . . . .

erhm what about the fat governors that are marrying 3-6 wives? Shouldn't they be the ones in control of their own households?
If a govenor comes into office with several wives, pick one that'll be the first lady instead of allowing the constant bickering and fighting. but I guess I should not be suprised, these useless govs cannot even control their own houses, much less the state they supposedly running.

Be careful of what you say because you may aggravate some people here. Women should be equal opportunity players in the Nigerian polity.

yeah. like men tell their wives the truth about all they get up to. Calling women fat and jobless? Dnt you have a mother? If they don't do anything, you d say they re idle.
A lot of these mothers r touching people's lives e.g Eunice Egwu. Jus because it doesnt make front page news doesnt mean otherwise.
Afterall, e easy to be first lady? u fit?
don't make yourselves believe that these women actually care about what they r called.

Engineered the success in terms  not admonishing their partners about the importance of accountability and transparency as a public-office holder or being an active participant in siphoning public-fund into their personal account all in the name of a  futile pet project?

Is this your definition of success?
