well, i don't know many jamaicans or whether they like africa/africans or not. but see marcus garvey and bob marley and them. they proud'a africa.

people (americans usually) think i'm jamaican or caribbean but they mostly say "jamaican" because that is the first caribbean country that comes to their mind. i always clearify them by telling them that i'm nigerian. even tho i was born in the states, when people ask me where i'm from, i always say africa/nigeria first. they later find out that i'm also american by birth, and they wonder why i never told them. i'm just too effin proud to be a nigerian and try to keep african friends. when i went to Nigeria last, i picked up fast and came back wit a little accent that i tried to keep because i was too proud of my heritage.
my friend was surprised when i told her i was nigerian. she told me that she's been telling people about her jamaican friend "me". it's not "offensive" to me, it's just that she was wrong and i had to correct her.
ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE AFRICAN.
MORAL OF THE STORY: ALL CARIBBEAN BLACKS ARE AFRICAN, BUT NOT ALL AFRICANS ARE CARIBBEAN BLACKS Wink

Question is do u call yourself an african for the sake of it, and based on your history or do you base it on where you were born ,bred, culture etc ? Its all well and good calling yourself african or anything else, but do you really have the african spirit, culture, attitudes etc?  You can say '' i have african roots, but i am jamaican or watever else, because its what i know and am''

true

Caribbeanites like myself embraces our African roots.

I am mixed ( Irish, Carib-African). as are many other natives of the islands. However, we portray our african heritage with pride.

To be honest growing up, I thought africans were naked people parading around making noise and lived in huts.  But with age comes maturity.

Over the years I have had the opportunity of meeting africans from all over the continent, and we have all connected so well it is amazing.

Being around and intermingling with my african brothers and sisters have made me realised, hey we are all the same.

So for those who are still in denial about their african connection, too bad, I found mine and it aint going anywhere.

I am  a proud African byproduct 2 da bone!!!!!

good for you. some people still think africans live on trees as monkeys. my room mate in college asked me once if we had beaches in Nigeria. i stared at her for a long time and afterwards told her, we didnt even know what a beach was, and would be happy to learn. she told me i was being sarcastic, but i figured if as a grown up you still believe africans are monkeys, then no need correcting you.

i know many Caribbean people are proud of their african heritage and strongly embrace it.
that's good. we can cut caribbean blacks some slack if they deny being african because they've been in their land for ages, but the one that still stuns me is when africans born in america, etc deny being african. if you ask them where they're from they'll start with "well, my dad's nigerian, and my mom's half Bajan, but i'm american tho". wtf?

my little sis used to deny being african cus i guess in her school africans get picked on. i understand the case for little kids but being grown, you should know better than to deny your roots. back in high school, these two AA girls where debating whether they should be called AFRICAN-american or just Black. they claimed that they aint african so they should just be called "black". of course i said something. i asked them, what color are people in africa? is there color "african"or "BLACK". of course they answered "black". i said "ur black, they're black so what's the difference, "of course they aint had nothing else to say they said "well i still aint african!" some folks aint even worth arguing with cus they'll keep going around in a circle.
