where did the name Niger come from
Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by Seun(m): 8:47pm On Sep 01, 2005
Niger stands for the River Niger.

My own name suggestion is Abujaland since that's where the seat of power now lies!

Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by Seun(m): 4:09am On Sep 02, 2005
obong, you don't know about the great river Niger. Oh no!

The Niger River is the principal river of western Africa, extending over 2500 miles (about 4000 km). It runs in a crescent through Guinea, Mali, Niger, Benin and Nigeria, discharging through a massive delta, known as the Oil Rivers, into the Gulf of Guinea. The Niger is the third longest river in Africa, exceeded only by the Nile and the Congo River (also known as the Zaïre River). Its main tributary is the Benue River.

Africa comes from Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. The Roman general that first brought what is today North Africa under Roman control. He was the man who defeated Hannibal...
Niger comes from the Latin word niger meaning black, incidentally the same root word that nigger comes from...
Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by obong(m): 5:37pm On Sep 04, 2005
figured as much. I was going to say africa comes from a roman word, but since roman wasnt a language i assume its italian.

Etymology

The name of the river Niger probably derives from the Latin or Portuguese word for "black", niger; another theory suggests that it comes from the Tuareg language gher n gheren = "river of rivers", The West African nations of Nigeria and Niger are named after the river. Its inhabitants have a variety of names for it depending on language, notably Joliba (in Manding) and Isa Ber ("big river", in Songhay).

The middle and lower course of the Niger was also known as Quorra.
Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by legs(f): 7:43am On Sep 07, 2005
rename nigeria?

reminds of tinubu's first term when he went around renaming streets, estates and even the lagos state anti-robbery squad; no prizes for guessing that the streets are in even worse conditions and that the police are even more pathetic...
Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by obong(m): 2:04pm On Sep 07, 2005
I guess nigeria is a fine name. We just need to add value to it
Re: A Better Name for Nigeria? by Pappy: 12:55am On Sep 08, 2005
I think it should be left as Nigeria. There's nothing wrong with Nigeria besides the fact that it was made up by a colonialist. I like the name WAZOBIA though, even though I wouldn't adopt it as the official name it should be the unofficial name of Nigeria. It could be used to promote tourism, can you imagine a commercial advertising Nigeria as a haven for blacks to live and do business and using that name? That would be nice. Nigeria should be the official name and Wazobia should be the tourism name. My 2 Cents.

Chxta:

Africa comes from Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus.
Much more probable it's the other way round. It was Publius to take his name from Africa. Why? Because he fought there against the carthaginians and won.
Africa has to be a greek word, exactly like Europe and Asia. Many parts of Africa are named after the name the greeks gave them. For example, Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, Even Ethiopia. In fact, the local name for Ethiopia was Abyssinia.
