I just got a call from a friend with an American Area Code. He told me he was calling from Naija 4real. I called him back with the same number and we spoke for some minutes and yet I got billed me as a local call. What's the technology behind this and who are the providers? How does it work? I am still surprised

Okay i was going to say when my friends in naija call me, it shows a US number, Like kentucky, or Illinois. WEIRD I SAY WEIRD!
But i've never tried to call em back tho, because i know that SPRINT, is going to charge me international. lol
I don't know the technology behind what just happened to you, but hunnie, u sure u checked your bill right??
My friend can call Nigeria direct through her t-mobile phone, but hell! they charge her long distance.

It was a VOIP call from Naija with an American assigned area code. I had done this before with a 708 number and somebody from Naija picked the call. I think it has a callback technology like 800 numbers where someone from India will be acting like Paris Hilton, but with an India accent. This technolgy fascinates me. I got to know this because I offered to call him back to save him some money and it was very clear and easy.

adconline, just make sure you always verify before calling back. In this case it was a VOIP number. But, if someone was roaming in Lagos (or anywhere in the world), and they call you, it's going to show the US number. If you call the number back without first verifying, you would be making an international call. I usually roam in Niger with my US or UK number when I first land, until I can get a hold of a local prepaid sim such as MTN.

How much does it cost for someone to ring my Voip-in number? This depends on where the other person is calling from and which telephone provider they use. The call should be charged at normal geographic rate (and if ringing from abroad a normal international call to your country) so the caller should check with their own telephone provider how much they charge for normal calls to landlines.
The above is from the FAQ page of voipbuster.com
To the best of my knowledge, any assigned voip number takes on the characteristics of the location of assignment, i.e the call a US number should cost the same as calling a US local number. Also, the person calling from a voip number pays the cost of calling the destination he is calling.
I will appreciate any concrete information to the contrary

Oluwizard, I have something similar but it's not free. It requires a US issued credit card. It's called voicestick. http://www.voicestick.com/Index.aspx It gives you a US or UK number that you can forward to any international number in the world but you have the pay the cost for receiving the call on the forwarded number. Their prices are pretty competitive. So, for example instead of giving my family members a calling card to use to call me on my prepaid sim in Lagos, I'll just give them this US number. This number will then be forwarded to my MTN sim. It will be a free call for anyone calling in the US, but I will pay the cost for forwarding the number. For example, to forward to a UK mobile it's $0.15/min to Niger mobile it's $0.16/min. Most of the calling cards are at least $0.20 to both UK and Niger. The bottom line is, it can be forwarded to any number in the world. And, it will not cost anyone in the US to reach me anywhere I am. No need for a calling card. I just have to pick up the tab for the call.

Hey y'all, over the past two days,I've had calls on my mobile phone from 2 rather strange numbers - 01 and 0911, though the network was poor and I couldn't get what they were trying to say.
My first thought was that it could be a corporate body trying to contact me, since I'm in the labour market. But even at that, I'm somehow confused (what with my friend trying to frighten me by telling me that those were "mystical numbers").
Please guys, does anyone know what these numbers mean?

Blueiyke, Is 911 not Naija Police? Maybe you should be on the run (JOKE). On a serious note, 01 would be either a Lagos land number or perhaps the USA or Canada. +91 is India, and +911 would be any of up to 17 locations within India's 51 city codes, though the call more probably came from Delhi or New Delhi.
However, with the recent developments as earlier discussed in this forum, your caller could be in the MOLUE next to yours,
