Sean Connery, is the best closely followed by Roger Moore. Daniel Craig as Bond is a radical departure in character. For those who have read the Bond' novels Craig is a bad portrayal of the Bond Character. he simply doesnt fit the bill. He is not a bad actor though, but the whole idea of changig the Bond Character is not ideal.
Actually if you are talking about the books then Craig and Dalton are the closest to them. The Bond in the book was a nasty piece of work with no respect for women, brutish and cold hearted. I think that in terms of the books Craig is very faithful, and also remember that Casino royale is an "origin story" showing the beginnings of Bond and how he starts on the road to the accomplished spy he becomes in the long run. That was his first 00 mission, see how he wears a Tux for the first time, acquires his first Aston and many other firsts. Roger Moore who is a fave of mine is as far from the books as you could ever get! But I grew up on his Bond and hence why he is so high in my estimation.

The current Casino Royale is more faithful to the book than others. The baddies did give Mr Bond's crown jewels a treat they'll never forget, pardon my crudeness. The book Bond was a complete bastid. I heard some other guy completed Fleming's last Bond book last year. Armed guards and bullion vans and who knows what else, bats out of hell?, accompanied the first print.

Talking about the recent Casino Royale, I realised that it has some similarities to the old 1960s one which had David Niven, Peter Sellars, Ursula Andress (the Bond girl in Dr. No), Orson Welles, Woody Allen etc.
The torture scene Mad Max mentioned was there as well as the drugging of Bond. Also characters like LeChiffre and Vesper. Of course they were all comical.

Sean Connery hands down!! Pierce Brosnan tried, and i came to be able to accept Roger Moore after a while. Daniel Craig i cannot stand at all! dude is built like some kain farmer/labourer, all wrong for the James Bond character imho*but even then, he isn't the worst, i can't remember the name of the worst, but he was the one in "On her Majesty's secret service", Gaddemn that dude was awful, what with the ravine in his chin, blech! *When i say all wrong for the character, i think Lafile explains it right, he is all wrong for the character of 007 on screen whom we have come to love/accept whatever, it's like, aside from the books, the movies have a whole tradition of their own, and Daniel Craig just doesn't have "it"

In terms of fashion sense, elegant/befitting tailoring I think Sean Connery stands out. The guy was such a hunk in his suits, casual threads; and in his early days, even his bare chest avec the hairy design

Maybe we should split the Bonds into two groups:
1. The popular Movie type Bond, the smooth suave operator types : Sean, Roger, Pierce
2. The Book type, the hardcore masochist angry types : George, Timothy, Daniel

That simpering, annoying ass who's so unrealistic I grit my teeth every time he daintily sips champagne and shoots like somebody's 90-year-old grandma. Up Craig! Now there's a badass, there's the real deal.

for the looks and the charm, the Best Bond goes to: Roger Moore. For the best acting Bond - Sean Connery. And as for this Craig guy: whether its his permanently scowling face or his stiff moves, I just don't dig him as a Bond. And hey, I actually thought Timothy Dalton was a quite respectable Bond. The cutest by far.

Daniel Craig looks like the typical secret agent Hard as nails(how else can someone survive someone beating down on your nuts?)Man about town? definitely Pierce Brosnan. A real sex god. Sean Connery brings that capability of joining these two sides.

You seem to be a real fan of Craig. Well one of my friends (arseblog) says not to watch the new film, Quantum Solace. But I don't think I'll be heeding. I've not missed any Bond movie yet, so I'll watch just to keep the record going. Did I say I liked Pierce the best? He sound more british than blondie blue-eyes.
