well said idupaul, as a matter of fact, I see it as belonging to the category as teachers, social workers, soldiers and yellow fevers!
It ain't about the money! It's about the smile you leave on peoples faces and more importantly the lives you save!
So to our young minds who are still in school and hoping to read merecine, dentistry etc (that is what my grandma calls it); think twice, if you are only interested in the bucks!

That is why health care in Nigeria will always be very poor.
Even the rich cannot get good healthcare in Nigeria.
This is because the government does not spend enough money on Health. Health is wealth.
If you have a healthy population then the workforce will provide a better service.

its quite unfortunate. Its not about bucks really but its really difficult helping others when your own basic needs arent met, when the society, family and friends expect a lot from you because they think as a doctor you should be making quite an amount of money. the job is tasking,it takes toll on your health, working days and nights,it is also emotionally tasking empathizing with those in pains, all doctors are asking for are not limousines, no, they only want to be able to afford a decent living in nigeria. Most of those who criticise docs are the type who would rather call a doctor friend on phone when they have health issues than go to the hospital, it must be realised that these health workers also have needs that must be met or esle we'll keep talking about brain drain till kingdom come, actually i don't think its brain drain, its more like brain flight!
I have a doctor friend serving in nigeria who was paid 18,000 a month!!! how appaling and you expect such a person to give his best in patient care? we must be joking!

It's a terrible situation here, Doctors are grossly underpaid in Nigeria. I wonder how you expect to get the best from them when they know what their counterparts elsewhere earn?
I think the NMA should do something to drive home their demand for a better welfare package, otherwise in no distant future you'll be begging people to study medicine in schools.
Infact these days, you see qualified doctors applying for bank jobs, cabin crew, and even customer service in telecomms companies. It's really appalling.
I wont take that crap on 'humanity', are doctors abroad suffering like the ones here? The govt. has to just do smoething about the health sector.

It's a shame on our government. A friend once told me that in Naija, you not only contend with witches and wizards, but that the government itself is so evil and demonic, they'll terrorize and make a big nonsense of your life for you no matter how hard working and righteous you can be.
The doctors should get out of the country and get better jobs outside. I have a lot of Medical Doctors as friends here (mostly Nigerians) They are the best paid and live the best lives. Though they first have to write some exams and therafter only make money when they run their own practices sha.

where is this doctor friend of yours in Nigeria? Is he a youth corper? that figure is well below the N50,000 a month my friend was paid close to ten years ago. Advise your friend to relocate to somewhere like Port harcourt, lagos, Ibadan or some other metropolitan town. If he's done with his youth service. And start residency ASAP, unless he travels out.

Whoever is saying doctors are getting payed less then 18,000 =N= is fooling themselves. obviously they are not getting what their counterparts abroad are getting, and this is very sad! but I know of a friend who is doing his practicals and he is getting over 100,000 =N=, which to me is still not very much, best bet in Nigeria is to open a private clinic, which also costs too,

It's either your doctor friend's are lying to you or they don't know their worth and are being exploited.
As way back as 2003, i know of a corper doctor in my village that was earning 120,000.00 naira per month from the Local Govt Council .

I mentioned that the guy in question is serving i.e NYSC in a adamawa state govt hospital, see i know its hard to believe for those outside the sector but its real, someone mentioned over 100,000, yes thats for those doing their internship(in a FEDERAL GOVT HOSPITAL) for which you compete with a thousand others for a few postitions to get in, and if you don't get in in 2 years, you return to medschool for some exams before continuing, now ask your friend how easy it was to get in, those in state hospitals get so much less,I'm sure you know they serve immediately after the internship you talked about, so imagine the downgrading of income, its crazy! @ roughlen please where is your village, thats is the joke of the century, even national hospital in abuja does not pay NYSC doctors 70k(its less) and see even in lagos that someone mentioned, the best u get in a private hospital is about 60k(except the likes of nicholas which pay 100000k.) i know about this things because i was in that system,so most docs end up running two hospitals together i.e your whole life is spent working days, nights and weekends and you still wont make 150k(about 625 pounds) at the end of the month! Ive encouraged many people to also leave the country because its just not worth the stress.don't blame doctors, its only natural for people to gravitate to where their work is apreciated. The problem with nigerians is seeing things the way gov sees it, thats bad because they can afford to travel out to treat 'malaria' while their supporters who believe docs are like 'yellow fevers' will face the decayed health sector,Lets think and get priorities right.
God help nigeria!

NYSC doctors salaries should not be used as the standard for all doctors in naija, But I do agree that doctors in Nigeria are grossly under payed, but so are all the other labour force sectors,
at the same time it just jerks me to hear that a banker is getting more than a doctor , its just wrong,

You've got to be kidding me! 120 K in a local govt?!! there is no way an LG will pay that amount to a corper doctor, even LG doctors don't earn that much
18K for a corper is quite feasible depending on the state where the person served - salaries for corper doctors range from say 25-60K again depending on how generous your state is.
the highest paid doctors now . . . are in Federal hospitals, some states & a few private hospitals (very rare). I am talking more about young doctors & not those who have 10-15 years of service under their belt, have consultant status (specialists) & can command 250 - 400K/month salaries. Despite all these, many doctors have to work 2-3 jobs as well as a lot of "runs" - don't let me go into all that - to earn as much as 120K per month.
al you who say doctors should be humanitarians - na humanitarianship go put food on my table, clothe me & help take care of my family's needs. Eg when my kids school fees are due, I shld just send a note to the principal - I'm a Humanitarian, no school fees to be paid!
What a load of BULL!

Tell your friend to move to a metropolitan town after his youth service. Some people enjoy during their NYSC program while others suffer. I have some friends who made sure they werent posted to an out of the way place during their service year. One served in Lagos while the other served in Ibadan even though they're both Yoruba. Many other examples like that. And yes, most doctors work two or more jobs in order to make more money,. Nothing wrong with that. Same thing happens when they are abroad. They work two or more jobs- one regular job and one extra. However, if you're going around telling people that it'll all be bread and butter if only they can travel out, then its either you really don't like them or you don't know much about studying medicine overseas. There's no western country in the world where you can practice without first sitting for your board exams and once you get into the residency program, you can be worked to a frazzle for minimal pay. I can't drum this into people's ears enough. Nurses are far better off financially than doctors, especially in the US, until the doctor is able to complete his training and earn good money. And even then, much of your labor is for taxes, because you are taxed heavily on what you earn.

@ Aiyetunje: it depends.
There was a doctor friend who got lucky during his youth service years ago. He was posted to some governor's village and treated the governor's mother. The grateful governor dashed him a lot of things, including money. He really enjoyed his stay there.
Some local governments pay well while others could care less.
At the other extreme, another doctor was posted to one village where the local govt council neglected to pay his salary because they said they were at war with the neighboring village which also happened to be where the pay office (or whatever) was based. The other village (their enemies), didnt do the necessary paperwork required for the doctor to get paid. The doctor wasnt even from their side yet he was made to bear the brunt of their quarrel. Na only God saved that doctor from malnutrition.

@ tpia from what ive seen, passing foreign exams isnt the biggest problem for the nija trained doctor, they've read under terrible conditions ,give em the right environment and they'l do just fine.of course its not all rosy out in europe or america but i tell you its much beter than being in nija and if really doctors are to make an impact in nigeria, they need the money they'll get from practice abroad to come home and do some nice things. I have friends with a 15year plan to go home and start up a standard health facility which will set the standards in pay and service. Ive talked to a few people because i know that when any species is threatened, they can't achieve much alone, they have to come together to make things work so partnerships are the future of the practice, enough of 3bedroom flat hospitals! come together start something nice and the results will come in pay for junior colleagues. "its not all rosy on the other side, but its not as hot as being in nigeria either" All in all, it depends on what brings fulfilment, life isnt about money really, its about adding value to others' lives but in that process you have to be comfortable. Smile docs, theres hope.

Guys Hey guys' you have to understand one thing about NYSC and Corper Doctors. AS far as the mandatory national service is concerned, an NYSC worker is serving Nigeria, and it is assumed that it is still part of the academic system. Thus everyone is expected to make do with the N7500 a month. It is obvious that this amount is not meant to be spent in America or Great Britain; as far as you remain in the local community where you are supposed to be for a year, this money will be sufficient for you (including rent and feeding). For those who serve in urban areas, I believe the state government have some additional stipends. It's unfortunate that in some organisations and states, this additional stipends go so high that Youth servers begin to compare national service with a career jobs, which is not meant to be. Doctors are not the only ones who do NYSC, I'm Computer Engineer, presently earning my living in UK, in my days, I was sent to a secondary school that didn't have a single computer. They neither studied physics nor Chemistry, I ended up teaching Mathematics, Social Studies, and Christian Religious Studies. So there's no problem with a doctor earning N18000

A lot of them folks just want to argue for the sake of argument purpose, NYSC is suppposed to be a compulsorily stuff and whatver is your entitlements at the end of the month could not be said to be your salary. There is no doctor in Nigeria that receives =N=18,000 as monthly salary. Nigeria is not that bad, folks.Even when i was serving far back 2001, the doctors amongst us were the first to buy cars while we were still grappling with our state allowee. I served in Nasasrawa state and not even in Lagos or Rivers state.

it depends. if you happen to get a good hospital, you might get something that will at least pay your bills. i served in Zamfara state and the Govt pays corpers doctors N35,000 and if you decide to stay after your service your sure of nothing less than 70,000. sre you'll save a good chunck of that pay because cost of leaving is very low. down here the competition is just too much.
