Nigerian Installed As Leader Of Apostolic Church In Uk

In "All Things Considered" this week (Sunday 27 July 8:30am, repeated Wednesday 30 July, 6:30pm) Peter Baker talks to the man who has made history for the Apostolic Church in the UK.

Born and brought up in Lagos, and witness to the horrors of the Nigerian civil war as a boy whilst being separated from his parents, Emmanuel Mbakwe emerged many years later in Britain to study law. He went on to build a career in the world of business consultancy and marketing and recently assumed a significant role in the Church. He talks to Peter Baker about his life and faith ahead of his visit to Wales next week when, on the campus of Swansea University, he will be officially installed as the National Leader of the Apostolic Church UK, the first person of African heritage in its 92 year old history to do so.

Also in the programme we hear about Hope 08, a faith in action project which has captured the imagination of the police, politicians and the business community. In a society of increasing knife crime, alienated teenagers and pressure on under funded social services, a sense of national despair is sometimes palpable. But what difference can the Church make? And at a time when the Church itself is struggling to survive, are such high profile initiatives the most effective use of limited resources?
